When I try to open a excel attachment it brings up microsoft word with a box that says FILE CONVERSION. I use to be able to click on a excel attachment from email and it would work great.

I can open up other excel files that are on my computer already with no problem. I can even save the attachment from emails to my PC and then view it that way, but I want to be able to click on the attachment in the email with saving anything to my PC.

I do have mircosoft word and excel.

Why should you not open an attachment in a mail?

Malicious people have been using email attachments to send malicious content for years, since before the World Wide Web was even invented. The first real email virus, Melissa, hit email users in 1989. The WWW didn’t come along until 1991.I don’t open email attachments unless I am expecting them, even from good friends that I trust. If I receive an email with an attachment I am not expecting from someone I know, I will either call or email them to verify the email and attachment are really from them. I don’t just reply, I send a separate email - after all, I don’t want my friend to be infected with something as well. Do I get a lot of email? Yes, I do, but I still take the time to protect myself.

Why do email attachments open as read-only?

Well, first of all, it depends on your mail software and what you are doing with the software. I think most software makes attachments read-only in received messages because the attachment is a part of a message.  Technically, it's a section within a "multipart" message, and it's not stored as a file on its own.  When you're reading the message, as opposed to replying or forwarding the message, the job of the email software is just to present what the sender submitted, not to allow you to make changes.  When you open the attachment, the attachment is extracted from the message and stored as a temporary file.  Now, consider what happens if you are allowed to edit that temporary file. You might keep it open for hours, and in the intervening time you might have closed that message, moved it around between folders, altered it in various ways (if the software allows that), made multiple copies of it, or even deleted it. Tracking all that and saving the edited attachment back to the message (or to all the copies you've made of it!) would be a pretty difficult task for the mail software to manage, and in a lot of cases it's probably going to create some degree of user confusion. The simpler choice is simply to make the file read-only.In messages in your Sent folder, the story is pretty much the same. Editing the attachment would be like changing history, and it presents all the same problems and possible points of confusion that it does for received messages. In draft messages, however, there's no particularly good reason to disallow editing attachments. Email software that doesn't allow it is probably just being a bit lazy.

I m suddenly unable to open Gmail attachments on my Android phone. How to resolve?

Try this -Go to your application settings, clear all the defaults set for the Gmail application and uninstall all the updates.Go to google play store and install the latest version again. Now open Gmail again and click on the attachment you want to open, you will be asked to choose an application to open the following attachments, select the desired application to open the attachment. If this doesn't help, go to the settings of the application you used before to open the attachments and clear all defaults and repeat the procedure above.Generally Google Drive is used to open the attachments by default, so try clearing defaults of the drive.Hope it helps.
