All answers so far are wrong. Here is the real story. Adivasis are original inhabitants of the area between Narmada and Godavari. They lived happily for 50,000 years until 16 th century. First Mughals invaded and killed them. Then others - Marathas and Hindu kings from west east and north. Invading armies above maintained posts and villages came up to support these invadersAfter these invaders zamindars occupied the land thus vacated. Then the british occupied the areas. British wanted the teak wood to build ships. So they supported zamindars and agents to bring this from surrounding forests. Indian businessmen got involved. Teak yes but also tendu leaves to make beedis. Both were and are multi million businesses. After 1840 missionaries got govt permission to preach. They salivated when they discovered adivasi culture. Undiscovered millions who could be converted. After independence mining became huge business. More exploitation all round. Politicians could not resist minerals and mining lobby. Police killed their beloved king who was also last king of Bastar in 1966 because he tried to stop this exploitation. First War of independence started in the Paharia revolt around 1770. Just read about history of jharkhand elsewhere. One reason Aurangzeb lost many battles with the Marathas was half his army was fighting adivasi kings at same time.You all know the rest. Naxals are not same as Maoists. Naxals evolved from adivasi movements. Then communist parties and college educated people joined. These are called Maoists. The exploitation continues. The actors wear new masks. That is all.
