Bangladesh

Who can tell me more about Bangladesh ?

I have answered a similar question a few days ago. I am repeating the same hereunder:

Bangladesh is a sovereign country that got liberated from Pakistan on 16th December 1971, after 10 months long guerilla fighting started from the 26th March 1971 when the then Pakistani occupation Army launched attack on the night of 25th March on unarmed people of the then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh.

It is surrounded by India on all sides except for a small border with Myanmar to the far southeast and the Bay of Bengal to the south. Together with the Indian state of West Bengal, it makes up the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal.

There are about 150 Million people live in Bangladesh, out of which 88.3% are Muslims, 10.5% Hindus, 0.6% Buddhists and 0.3% Christians.

Bangla is the mother tongue and main language of the entire people of Bangladesh except for the tribal, who are very few in numbers and live mostly in the border areas. They speak their own languages like Chakma, Marma, Manipuri, Garo, Hajong etc. They also speak Bangla in the society with the non-tribal. The educated people of the country can also speak English, Hindi, Urdu, Arabic etc. as and when necessary.

The currency of Bangladesh is known as “Taka” and abbreviated as “Tk.”. The exchange rate for your practical purpose is Taka 70 = 1 US Dollar.

Hope above may suffice to know about Bangladesh. If you need more information then please browse the following links.

What do you call people from Bangladesh?

Citizens of Bangladesh are officially known as “BANGLADESHI”.

The name of our language in Bangladesh is "Bangla", but this we used to pronounce it as "Bengali" since the British used to say that to mean our mother tongue - Bangla.

Citizens of Bangladesh were officially known as "Bengali" after our liberation when our famous leader Sk. Mujibur Rahman asked all the tribal to become “Bangalee” which was the first bone of contention for the tribal upheavals that had many other causes too.

The majority ethnic group of Bangladesh is the Bengali people known as Bangladeshi. The Bangla speaking comprising 98% of the population. The remainders are mostly Bihari migrants and indigenous tribal groups. There are thirteen tribal groups located in the Chittagong Hill Tracts; the most populous of the tribes are the Chakmas.

Therefore, Bengali is used for language and Bangladeshi is used for nationality of people of Bangladesh.

Hope this clarifies the matter.

What do they call people from Bangladesh?

bengali, bangladeshi, asian, muslim, this is what i call them.

there is a BIG difference between a bangladeshi and a bengali. bengali is an ethnic group native to the bengal region, of india(west bengal) and bangladesh(east bengal)

a bangladeshi is any person from bangladesh(not india). a chakma, mizo,(mongols in south asia) can be bangladeshi but not an ethnic bengali.

so bengalis can be from india or bangladesh while bangladeshis are only from bangladesh

i once heard pakistanis call them machi (fish) twhich is mean and offensive.
they are a country next to india and burma. bangladeshis are mostly muslims with a small hindu population. you can also call them south asian, or desi.

Do they say "namaste" in Bangladesh?

Namaste is a Hindi word, Indian Hindus say this as welcome.
In Bangladesh Muslims say " As salamu alaikum' ( May peace blessed on you) as welcome and Hindus say 'Nomoshkar' as welcome.

Why is bangladesh such a lucky country?

I guess Bangladesh is not so lucky. After the independence in 1971, Bangladesh was totally broke. There was famine in '74, where US denied food and rations to reach Bangladesh - resulted in death of millions. Natural calamities are common in Bangladesh, floods, typhoons are almost regular incident. People of Bangladesh are resilient, they always fight back and get back on their feet from these disasters. Even though Bangladesh was born with the ideology of equality for all people, it did not remain so. A series of dictatorship paved the way for radical ideology. Hindu temples ( who are minority in Bangladesh) are being attacked every year, sometimes minorities are forced out of their homes, and often they face discrimination in the society. Being geographically isolated from middle-east and Pakistan, it is difficult for people with radical ideas from those regions to infiltrate Bangladesh. But that did not stop home grown terrorist groups to form and act on their behalf. Bangladesh is now on the verge of being in the same situation of Pakistan, where the terrorists often attacks innocent people to make some kind of messed up points. To make the situation worse, Bangladesh is now heading towards single party dictatorship. For a stable democracy, a country does need opposition voice, with reasons. There is no strong opposition party now, which shifts people's opinion to far right, which is scary. We can only hope for the best, but the future does look grim.

Is Bangladesh an unlucky country?

You know, after India, Bangladesh is the second country I adore on it, in South Asia. I feel a kinship with Bangladesh. As a foreigner and an observer there.I think they were unlucky guy, even not so bad like Vietnam. Remember on it. Why? And what happened to Bangladesh before? Check on:A country which was part of Pakistan. But instead Pakistan treated her with a brutal view. The Punjabi-Urdu nationalism of Pakistan had ruined East Pakistan those days. The British legacy left to Bangladesh was the partition of West Bengal of Hindu majority and East Bengal of Muslim majority. Thus this divided Bangladesh a lot.Being bullied by Pakistan led the Bengali unrest and at 1971, they and India formed an alliance. Eventually Pakistan was beaten out (thanked for Sam Manekshaw) and Indian nation. However, like India had promised, Bangladesh was not annexed but become a country.Bangladesh still faces internal society problem, a lot.Well I can understand it however now Bangladesh is no longer weak now. They are now one of 11 countries would go through with the BRICS. New stars. Economic wealth.Bangladesh was unlucky. But not anymore. Unlike Vietnam who is now still stuck with “made in China”.P.S.: I really like Tagore because he was the first Asian (and the first Bengali, main people inhabitant of Bangladesh), won the Nobel.
