What do I need to become a CBT therapist?

As far as I am aware, you will need to study for a counselling diploma or a psych and counselling joint degree (depends on which country you live in of course) and then move onto postgrad training and masters. It's a fantastic journey, however I would advise to browse the Internet or access websites like the BPA (in Britain) which tells you if the course is accredited and recognised by particular relevant bodies (that would become important when you will want to apply for jobs, especially if interested in working in governmental bodies) I would suggest to search for as many courses as possible and contact the organisations/colleges/universities and get as much info as you can in order to make an informed decision. If you really want it, make sure you don't let anyone change your goals, stick to it even when it's going to get tough (that's not going to happen of your life iits been and it is perfect though) and enjoy the journey. Good luck!

What's the difference between a psychologist, therapist, social worker, and a psychiatrist?

Therapist: a general term which means healer; anyone who helps heal illness physical, mental, emotional, transactional.
Psychiatrist is a medical doctor with special training in the treatment of diagnosed disorders usually defined in the mental health section of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of the extant edition. Drugs are a major factor in this process and is sometimes accompanied by talk therapies.
Pschologist is trained to administer various tests which measure aspects of people's mental and emotional traits and functions. Master's degree practitioners must be supervised by a PhD. Testing is the main focus of this practice.
Social workers also come in master's and doctoral degrees. The focus of their practice is what happens when the intrapsychic functioning encounters the social environment. Transactions and other interactions are the focus. Marriage and family relations are important as fundamental to all persons. Individuals are treated for their family experiences as formative in their lives. Talking with people in a person-centered approach is basic.
Medical models deal with medically diagnosed illnesses. Psychology uses cognitive-behavioral concepts. Social work utilizes both medical and psychological concepts in social contexts.

I am an ISTJ with a psychology degree?

To clarify for those of you who don't know, ISTJ is a personality type (Jung / Myers-Briggs). (Introverted Sensing Thinking Judging)

This type of personality is commonly referred to as the "Inspectors" or "Examiners."
They have a difficult time expressing empathy and often appear aloof because of their introverted thinking. Think "Eeyore" from Winnie the Pooh.

Unfortunately, empathy is an important part of many psychology related positions. Almost all therapeutic orientations, school counselor/psychologist, drug addiction counselor, and similar positions require empathy to be successful at your position.

I would suggest pursuing your degree in areas that don't require a great amount of emotional empathy and are more oriented to analyzing the facts. Try Cognitive Behavioral Psychologist, or Industrial Organizational Psychologist. A Cog-B psychologist (act like "Dr. Laura") are a no nonsense, just the facts of the here and now, lets change your maladaptive behavior and write self help books, type of therapists. IO psychologists are involved in business organization, human resource, etc.

NOTE: Personality tests are not always correct. I know as a psychology BA you understand that there is a degree of error in all tests. I would suggest that you don't make a career decision based solely on your "ISTJ" personality rating. Go back to your University and talk with some of your favorite professors. They will have a wide knowledge of psychology jobs and be happy to steer you in the right direction. Then you can talk with the professors in those areas of study to get an even better idea of what you want to do.

PS I am an INFP

A short and relatively accurate Myers-Briggs type personality test can be taken for free here http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTyp...

Can you become a mental health therapist with a BA and MA or do you need a BS and MS?

Can you become a mental health therapist with a BA and MA or do you need a BS and MS?The degree I am most familiar with is called MSW, i.e. Master of Social Work, which follows a BA (you’ll need the proper undergrad courses to get into the MSW program). There are a variety of types of mental health therapists. At the graduate level, I took a few electives at the Seminary for pastoral counselling given through American Family and Marriage Counselling. Some therapists are psychologists, others are psychiatrists. Each discipline has its own strengths and weaknesses, its own specific training program in school classroom and practicum. To answer your question. Find out from existing programs what degrees you need. Research school websites, contact program advisers. I got my schooling ten, twenty years ago. Some things have changed since then, others have stayed the same. Also, some details may depend on your country or other jurisdiction.

Is it legally possible to start a counseling service without a psychology or social work degree in the United States?

My first snarky answer is Yes! Because you can start a counseling service with a *counseling* degree, the degree designed for it. I know that’s not what you’re asking, though. You have to be careful with your terms, and I’m betting it varies by state. You would also have to be careful that your scope of practice did not infringe on a protected profession. The corporations that publish testing instruments won’t even sell them to you without appropriate credentials.Life coaching and spiritual direction are two fields that involve some degree of counseling but not the credential or the license.Interesting side note: part of the code of ethics when I got my degree (I believe the national certification, which I’ve since let expire) involves agreeing not to even use my MA as a postnomial except where it is directly relevant, so it works both ways.
