Best Pre-professional Ballet Programs

Pre-professional dance school for jazz dancer?

Dancers who dance on Broadway are professional dancers with strong ballet background. You would be surprised how many dancers on Broadway were once professional ballet dancers and then retired form ballet in their 20s to dance on Broadway. As jazz technique is essentially ballet without using your turnout that is why pre-professional schools are really all ballet focus even though many do not go on to ballet careers but other dance genre. Modern dance training is also an important element for any well rounded professional dancer.
Jazz along with many other genres just becomes an easy choreography for a well trained classical and modern dancer to do.
That being said, Pointe Park has a good BFA triple focus program of ballet, modern and jazz. You also might want to check out Giordino Jazz Dance in Chicago.

*EDIT: Regarding weight and height what is most important is your line, your facility for dance and your musicality. That is something you must be born with as that is bone and muscle structure. While ballet likes female dancers 5'2" to 5' 8" tall, most other dance genres like their dancers at least 5' 5" or 5' 6" tall to no taller than 5' 10" for the women. Of course there are exceptions on both sides of the spectrum, but for getting work it helps to be within these guidelines. Regarding weight at 5' 5" about 115 and for each inch taller than that you add about 5 pounds. (For a ballet career, that would be at least 10 pound below those weights)

Pre-professional Ballet schools with boarding?

Congratulations on such ambitious goals! Next year, you really need to audition for big summer intensives including San Francisco Ballet, School of American Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and Pacific Northwest Ballet. If you are very good, you may be accepted go the year round program. You may even get a scholarship. Really broaden your ballet knowledge and perfect your technique. Artistry is also extremely important. A summer intensive is the best way to get into the ballet world. You can also enter competitions such as YAGP for people to notice you.

What Is The Best Ballet School In The Nation ??

You're mixing apples and oranges. Juilliard is a performing arts college that includes a Dance Division where you can earn a BFA in dance. While they offer excellent ballet classes, you can't major in ballet and I don't believe they ever perform en pointe. They are mostly known as a top-notch contemporary dance program.

The Joffrey Ballet School is a pre-professional training center for ballet. They have tried to partner with a couple of universities so that students can train there plus get a degree, but those arrangements keep falling through. They offer excellent training in ballet, but so do many other ballet company-sponsored schools. And as long as you're a very good dancer, the program is not that hard to get accepted to. They are mostly known for running an excellent Trainee program for older pre-professional students (17-22 years old).

I would have to agree with monket and Kathleen that if you're talking about the best ballet school in the nation, the consensus would be SAB - the School of American Ballet.

All three programs are in NYC. Your boyfriend said Juilliard just because everyone says Juilliard in relation to dance or music. It's tough to get into because they only accept 12 guys and 12 girls a year. But that's a college, while the Joffrey Trainee program is all ballet. I think the bet is a draw.

Does anyone know of a pre-professional dance boarding school?

If you are interested in pursuing a career in ballet you don't go to college. You do it right after high school. That is the time to apprentice. If you want to dance with Ailey, you have to take classes there. You cannot seriously double major in dance and also have a minor. There are not enough hours in the day and it would take more then 8 years to graduate from college. You would be wasting the best part of your dancing career in school. Many dancers go back to school after their career is over. They also wouldn't allow a double major plus a minor. A dance major going for a BFA in Dance dances around 6 hours a day plus academics and rehearsals. Days go from 9 Am to 9 PM and this is just for a single major in dance. Then you have home work and papers to write.
All this being said, for ballet, I would recommend SAB .They have boarding and you could attend PPAS or LAGuardia Arts which has stronger academics.. If you wish to be in ABT you should go to SAB or the JKO school, then audition for ABT2. If you lived in NYC and were not looking for a boarding school I would recommend LaGuardia Arts H.S. for dance and take classes after school at one of the major ballet academies as well after school or at Ailey. If you aren't of color, there is very little chance you will be able to dance with Ailey. They occasionally take Caucasian men but never women. Contemporary dancers need to go to a conservatory or college for in order to gain strength and years. Most companies will not hire until the 20s for that.

What are examples of the best ballet schools in the USA?

There is no school that is the best at teaching every level of student.Your pre-schooler is best off in a local dance school where the teachers are qualified (some post high school performance experience or college training) and have a love of dance and teaching youngsters. Classes should be fun an stress free and the end of the year they should have a recital in a pretty costume. If that child continues to love ballet about the time they are eight they should move to a local ballet school that is not too large where the teachers have a ballet performance background or collegate training focusing on ballet. The school should have a reasonable number of allumni who have gone on to study dance after high school in competitive programs and have students who regularly attend competitive summer programs. This school should have a caring teacher who hopefully can serve as a life long mentor. Then if your teenager outgrows that program (not enough weekly classes or other dancers at their level) they can start to look for a finishing school where the student can gain what they need to become competitive nationally. You will get lots of answers as to what the “best” programs are and most of these are large programs that either feed into professional companies or are competition powerhouses. These schools are great because they attract students who started at smaller schools. They typically either kick out students as they age to make room for these dancers (SAB is known for doing this) or they have special levels for these students who generally didn't start at the program.Ballet dancers are born as much as they are molded by teachers. Going to SAB as an eight year old does not make you anymore likely be a professional as the eight year old at Miss Suzie's Ballet school.

What should a ballet dancer's diet consist of?

I’m a ballet dancer, and most of my friends are dancers. I need to echo Craig Good here: no two dancers eat the same way, we all have different preferences and options available to us, and we all eat considerably more than non-dancers would expect.Sometimes you need to eat and you only have access to an orange, or a Twix, or you’re next door to a Pret a Manger, or a pizzaria, and you figure out what to do to keep yourself alert and well. Some dancers cook, some don’t. Some dancers are adventurous, some aren’t. Dancers who undernourish themselves underperform. There is a video making the rounds on YouTube that shows a ballet dancer counting calories with a plan of losing 1.5 lbs, .5 lbs per week. The comments in this video are infuriating (paraphrased):“Why is she eating pre-packaged food? She doesn’t care about her health!”“If she ate only paleo she would lose weight faster than just. 5 lbs per week!”“She’s not vegan! How disgusting!”“She shouldn’t lose weight, she is already too thin!”These people have no idea what they’re talking about. They are watching a person who is extremely aware of her health and well-being, who knows her joints are safest at a very precise weight. Do YOU know what weight is safest for you to dance en pointe? And if she tried to lose weight faster, she would almost certainly get sick or injured, and what she chooses to eat is nobody’s business. She is keeping herself going in the best way for her own life and body.I also want to make another statement about dancers: we all have different body shapes. We really do. Not all of us have the ectomorph shape. However, if we are very good dancers, you will notice our MOVEMENT, and you may not realize you are looking at a group of people of varied appearance.

Best Ballet Training in NY for Kids?

How do schools like Alvin Ailey, BAE, Dance Theater of Harlem, Joffrey, and MYB compare to SAB and JKO (ABT) for ballet training for young kids (think beginner/entry level, ages 6-8)? Can someone please rank the schools I mentioned from best to least? Also, assuming a child has the ability, is it good to primarily train at one school all the way from youth to 18 (besides attending various summer intensives & workshops elsewhere)..or is good to switch it up? (I've been researching some professional ballerinas and many have changed from one great school to another during adolescence.)

Lastly, when considering multiple styles for kids, can you please rank these 3 in terms of their pre-professional training programs for kids: BDC, Steps on Broadway, Peridance. Thanks so much!

My mom is making me take 2 ballet classes a week instead of 3, but just for a month. I want to be a professional dancer and I'm already 14. Will this set me back?

It will only set you back if that is the only time you are putting in the time to work and practice. If you want to be a professional, you must get in the habit of dancing every day. This means that you use the days that you aren't in class to perfect your technique and do conditioning. There are stretch routines and online dance classes on YouTube that you can use if you have trouble creating a routine. You can also look up ballet curriculum and go along with it. Best of luck!
