Would the Thor: Ragnarok movie have made the same amount of money if it had been a more serious movie?
Honestly, i felt the first the plot of the first two thor movies were too simple and adding comedy would have distracted audiences away from the thin plot. The cinematography did not help too.The success of ragnarok might not be just a comedy factor.Ragnarok is much brighter and sharper in picture quality as well. Even in surtar lair, every subject is well lit with beautiful contrast. Not only was it beautifully produced, the script itself is darker than before.Force slaverly into fighting. Substance abuses. A person got shot and melted down infront of the audiences. Rebellious against slave master. Thor lost an eye. Entire planet destroyed.The first two movie was just family issues with a side of worldly problems - loki want to be taken seriously, thor redemption, odin grieve for his wife death and the dark elves want to destroy the world for no reasons well explained. The only interesting plot was at the end of the dark world where loki replaced odin.If Ragnarok was written in a serious tone, it might have performed better than its current format because of the superior writing and I would argue, a better cinmatographer.

This movie is in the list of one of the most surprising success of all time, not just MCU.Although Black Panther was an unprecedented success and no one expected it to earn as much as it did but it was destined to be a box office success. The goodwill and trust earned by MCU had at least made sure that the movie won't flop.But this movie, Guardians of the Galaxy was not even assured of earning back it's budget when it began it's production. And remember Marvel was not as big at that time as it is now!It was a movie made about some comic book characters, even some die-hard comic book fans struggled to remember.This movie had a main lead whose most famous role before this movie was playing a secondary character as a dumb overweight guy in a sitcom.This movie had a director who never had any experience directing a big budget movie and his most famous work on a popular franchise was as a writer on a Scooby Doo film.The two female leads are still not that famous to be recognized without makeup and effects, leave opening a movie on their own.The third lead is a wrestler turned actor who is nowhere near as popular as the other wrestler turned actors like Dwayne Johnson and John Cena both in and out of wrestling world.The fourth and fifth main characters of this movie were a Talking Raccoon and a “freaking” Tree.Do you know the most famous non-humanoid character in a movie before these two appeared? It was Chewbacca and that was wayback in the original Star Wars and he wasn't even the main character!Apart from that even the villains, the supporting characters, the setting everything was unknown.The only two people who were part of this movie and were famous had just voice roles and were most probably just signed for their names on promotional materials.(Don't be startled, they are Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper! Just with hair swap)So there you've it, a movie with an unknown director, a lead who was not known for action roles, female lead whose other most famous character was CGI, a wrestler, a Woody Harlenson lookalike, a Raccoon and a tree and it went on the become one of the biggest hit of that year, of it's franchise and of it's genre.If this isn't surprising, then what is?
