Is sexual orientation genetic or behavioral?

You don't think this, you don't think that. You may think, but you don't know. You can't. You're not gay. You haven't lived it. You also should believe your friends when they tell you they are as they were made. We don't choose to be gay. It's something we come to realize as an unavoidable truth about ourselves. We either accept it and embrace it, or deny it and repress it, but that's as far as the 'choice' aspect goes. It's very easy for straight people who grow up in a straight world surrounded by straight role models and straight images to think that they chose to be straight. We grow up in that same world, and find out that all of that is not true for us. We struggle with it, pray it's not true, maybe even try to pretend it's not true. But inevitably, we can't deny who we are. That's the choice: be yourself, or live a lie. If you think that's the same as 'choosing' to be gay, think again.

You are right about one thing, though. When it is established, as it inevitably will be, that there is at least some genetic basis for homosexuality, we will face the danger of that parents will attempt to impose genetic engineering, or worse, seek abortions, to avoid having a gay child. Such is the sickness of homophobia: parents might choose to have no child rather than risk a gay one. I can only hope that the same studies that prove a genetic variation will also show that it is a normally occurring variation, like left-handedness, so that we do not end up fighting for our very right to be born. Believe me, the religious nuts would make an exception pretty quickly to their opposition to genetic research and abortion if they thought they could get rid of gay people. It's sickening.

What is the biological perspective on abnormal behaviors?

The biological perspective supports the notion that abnormal psychology disorders are caused, at least in part, by genetics. This perspective suggests that people can inherit a susceptibility to a certain disorder, just like we can inherit a susceptibility to heart disease. Many psychologists believe that certain disorders are the result of a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental influence.

PSYCHOLOGY what does the phrase "genetics loads the gun, the environment pulls the trigger?

We have genetic predispositions that influence our behaviors to various extents. The environment of a person is what is around them that has a tangible effect on a person. My example is of an epileptic person. They have a genetic predisposition to this disease and certain environmental factors can trigger a seizure. Most epileptics should stay away from places that have strobe lights.

Agreed Sirius: I'm epileptic. We discovered (thanks to me) that the women in my family are predisposed to this. We found out when the game "Mario" came out and I played it... took about 30 seconds to have a Grand Mal. That was 25 years ago. Through self research I learned to change my lifestyle; eating, sleeping, and excercise habits. I changed my type of diagnosed epiliepsy, which had taken over my life, to one that is manageable and I've now been seizure free for 9 years.

Is human behavior genetic or learned?

My dad was adopted, and he didn’t meet his biological mother until he was around 40 years old. His biological father died in 1955(ish), so he never - not once - interacted with the man in his life.My father loved icecream. Chocolate was his favorite. (mine, too.)His biological mother’s favorite icecream is chocolate. My father had an innate resistance to the cold. He could easily, comfortably, ski in a t-shirt or go get the mail in a foot of snow in shorts. (Me, too.)His biological mother is the same way.My father loved motorcycles. (Me, too.)His biological mother didn’t give up her motorcycle license till she was well into her 70’s. His biological father adored motorcycles. He died in a motorcycle accident. On the other hand, my biological grandmother is very conservative.I’m extremely liberal. My grandmother wanted (and had) kids.I don’t.My grandmother thinks swearing is crass.I think it’s fan-fucking-tabulous.My grandmother is content with living in the US of A within 30 miles of where she was born, and only traveling to the states bordering hers.I’m not.On the adoptive side:My grandfather loved science. So do I.My grandfather started all his stories with “Did you know…?” Me, too.My grandfather adored traveling and did so as frequently as he could. So do I.My grandfather adopted kids and didn’t have any biological offspring. That’s my plan, too.Human behavior is an interesting mixture of genetic and learned. In the nurture vs. nature debate, the answer is generally “It’s a mix.”

I have a psych/biology question?

Your right. Not all genetic charateristics are NOT inherited. Take multiplt-sclerosis, for years they cant determine if its a trait through genetics or the environment. Alcoholism is still undeceided if its a trait through genetics or the environment. Same thing with asthma,high-blood pressure and thyroid deseases. Nothing really is set in stone. If you find the answer, please let me know. Take care.
