Birthday Present Idea For Someone About To Move To Canada

I don't have the money to get my friend a birthday present?

Her birthday is in 3 days. I 've spent much money recently and I 'm sure I 'll be broke by Tuesday. But yesterday I didn't realize how littl money I have and made the mistake to ask her if she prefers anything special for her birthday. She said she does, and I showed to her that I 'll get her what she wants as a present! Then I realized I will probably can't afford the thing she wants. I 'll be embarassed if I tell her I didn't have enough money to buy her a present of her choice. I also don't want to get her sth very cheap, because I 've done this before and don't want to repeat it. She 's not a very close friend of mine, so I 'm not intending to sav money for her present. What do you suggest me to do:
1) Don't get her anything?
2) Buy her a very cheap present?
3) Try to make her a present on my own that I think she 'll appreciate?
4) Share the cost with my best friend, who is also a friend of the girl whose birthday is in 3 days?
5) Get her her "dream present"?
6) Something else? (please describe)

Birthday gift ideas for my dad (who has almost everything!)?

Canukgal,

I envy you this problem. I never knew what to get my Dad. Now, I'll never have this problem again. He died 4 years ago not long after my birthday.

The things I WISH I had gotten him all have something to do with more time together and talking and making contact more. How about an invitation, with a pic of you inside, inviting him to take you "hunting". You could provide some hot cocoa, and think up ahead of time a list of things you want to talk to him about before you no longer have the chance. : ) God Bless, and have a GREAT day with your Dad.

Going away present for my good friend/co-worker (moving to Florida)?

First off, Aren't you jealous? I am! I would love to live there! (Despite a thunderstorm daily at about noon).

It would be cute to get her a towel, sandals (you have to be sneaky and find out her size, just get her the cheap ones at Old Navy or Target), and something else beachy/summery. Say "I'm sure you'll need this in Florida!" Keep in mind she may not be moving to the beach persay, but she'll likely visit. You're lucky because a lot of stores have summery things out right now. Even sun block might be a cute idea!

What is a good going-away gift for someone moving to Vietnam?

A friend is moving to Vietnam for business for a short-time. His wife and college-aged daughter are going along and they'll be there less than a year. They are technology savvy, and already have electronic address books. Can you help us think of a perfect going-away gift?
Thanks!!!!

What is a good present to get a friend moving to Amsterdam?

~A bike so they can ride through the city like other Amsterdamers.
~A strippenkaart (can be used to ride on busses and trams). ~A calling card so they he/she can call you, family and other friends.
~ An Amsterdam City or Netherlands Guidebook so that they can learn more about the city or country.
~ How to learn Dutch books or c.d.'s (If they don't know how to speak Dutch).
~ Scarves. Europeans love to wear scarves.

Just some ideas.

What is the best authentic American gift to give to a friend from another country? What are items available in the US that are hard to come by in other places, or things that seem like fun American souvenirs?

I very much approve of maple syrup (Josh Siegle), wild rice (D.A. Blackburn), Alaska smoked salmon (Angela Keen) and especially Jack Daniels (Joseph Kurtz).  I think regional food specialties are an excellent gift.  I would try to give a present that would suit the recipient's culture and interests.Foods can be good, as long as they don't offend.  Alcohol and pork are out if your friend is a Muslim.  Cheeses are seen as distasteful by many Asians.  Animal products can offend and disgust some religions.  Some colors of food are problematic, e.g., black beans or licorice.  Root beer and Dr. Pepper are enjoyed in some places, but many Europeans hate them.  I'd look for American foods that are unique, and I'd accompany them with a recipe for the most typical dish made from the item, so the recipient can use the item.Things I've given, in addition to maple syrup and Jack black:Peanut butter and grape jellyHot pepper sauce (40 years ago, before they were universal)Old Bay SeasoningChili Con Carne spice mix"Homemade" corn whiskeyVidalia onion relish and jamFruit jellies and jamsAn "American" cookbook (with explanations of what the ingredients are and how to use and store them)A coffee table book on American art or the work of an American artist or American historyEDIT ADDED:I once gave somebody a set of US 25-cent pieces commemorating all of the US states, and I have given uncirculated dollar coins in individual plastic cases.A compendium of great American poetry was appreciated, as was a book about Frederick Remington's old West art.

"Texas survival kit" Christmas present idea.?

My brother is moving off to Texas this upcoming spring. He is 21 and is moving there from Ohio.

My brother (different brother) and i were trying to think of what to get him and decided upon a "Texas Survival Kit", where we would get him a bunch of little funny things, some of which would help him in Texas, and some for a cheap laugh.

With every item i get him, i think i'm going to write a little explanation on the gift and its significance.

*Here are some of my ideas thus far.

1.) Spanish-English Dictionary: As a kid you were a fool to ever think you would use the German which you chose to learn in high school. To make up for your mistake, i have gotten you a last minute, equally effective solution....

2.)Poncho: It rains slightly less in Texas than it does in Ohio. "Then why a poncho" you may ask? Because the kind of rain in Texas will stain your clothes. Texas is responsible for more executions than any other state in the United states. Ohio's 28 executions quivers in the shadows of Texas's 423, with 373 more to come. It is sure to be a blood bath....

These are examples of the kinds of things i'm trying to do. Any other examples would be greatly appreciated.

*I apologize to any Texan offended. It is a joke. I'm not amazingly funny, but funny is the only thing you can be when you don't have much money.
