Biting My Lip When Eating

What causes you to bite your lip when chewing gum or eating? Is it misallignment of the teeth?

I have recently had problems where I'm biting my bottom lip when I'm either chewing gum or eating, and I can't place the source of why I'm doing it. I'm not chewing fast or anything like that. Is it because I don't have perfect teeth, and the bad alignment of the teeth can slip even further and take a chunk out of my lip?

Why do I keep biting my lower lip when I eat?

It sounds like your "bite" is off. Go see your dentist soon. Eat much slower in the meantime.

How do I stop biting my tongue and lips while eating?

Slow down and don't let yourself become distracted. It's when you're focusing your attention on something else -- or talking -- that one ends up biting oneself.

What is the treatment for biting a lip while eating?

If you bite your lip while eating, immediately take a mouthful of cold water (or other cold beverage) to help ease the pain and reduce the swelling. You can resume eating within a minute or two, but the cold liquid will help. If, of course, you’re bleeding copiously, bite down hard on a folded or bunched piece of cloth (napkin?) and head for the ER for stitches.

What can I eat while my lip piercing is healing?

A few hours after I had my lip pierced, I ate steak and chips, it just took a little bit longer to eat. So it just depends on what you can handle really. Though alcohol and spicy food isn't really recommended.

Labret bars are generally better than CBRs for healing and try not to play with the piercings too much.
Ibuprofen and ice will help swelling go down.

Aftercare -
Lip - Sea salt soaks. 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt to a mug of boiling water. Wait for it to cool down enough (so it doesn't burn you) and then dip a cotton bud in the solution and wipe around the piercing to loosen the crusties, Once or twice a day.
Tongue - Alcohol free mouthwash. Once or twice a day.
Though for all my piercings, I generally just left them alone and soaked them whenever there was crusties around the bar.

Why do I keep biting my lip whenever I eat?

hey if you google 'why do i bite my lip when i eat' lots of sites come up

i found one and here was some of the comments from people with the same problem

1# Sometimes it's a lack of concentration, e.g., trying to eat and talk at the same time.
If it persists, see your dentist to get your bite checked out.

2# Often your bite will change if wisdom teeth are starting to come in - this happened to my boyfriend. If you haven't had yours out already, get an xray to see if that could be the problem. Similarly, if you just had your wisdom teeth removed recently, that would also cause more mis-biting.

3# Some people love chapstick, so maybe it works well for other people, but I've found that it's better for protecting lips from further damage than for softening and soothing chapped, broken lips. I like cocoa butter for this-I've always used something like this. I wouldn't rub it directly into a bad cut, but it works really well. A little greasier than chapstick, but not as much as vaseline, so if you tend to have major breakouts around the mouth you might want to skip it also. It also has a good taste for a chapstick replacement-good enough to not bother you(it is cocoa butter after all), not so good you want to eat the whole stick.

i hope this helps for me, i just think this is a habit you need to break out of , nothing to worry about hun =]

Why do we bite our cheeks or tongue when eating?

Barring dental issues, we bite our cheeks and tongue when eating because of friction. When we bite ourselves accidentally, it’s a sign that parts of our mouth are dry. When your mouth is chewing, your teeth are constantly running against the cheeks because your cheeks are what keeps your food in, and sometimes comes into contact with your tongue because your tongue keeps your food moving. In fact, evolution has developed rather clever methods to keep yourself from damaging these parts: in the slippery gummy surface of your mouth, and in the way you produce saliva inside your mouth. This produces natural lubrication for you to chew on :)However, your body can only do so much before this lubrication is exhausted. In other words, your mouth may have dried up before or during your meal. This may be because moisture has disappeared from the lining your of mouth or something in your food has repelled that very moisture. Dry foods (e.g. bread) are one culprit because they absorb too much moisture, while oily foods (e.g. pizza) are another because they are hydrophobic. If the food is both dry and oily, you will turn your mouth into an arid desert. You can prevent yourself from biting your mouth by drinking water before your meal, and avoiding foods that are too dry or too oily. The water alone should greatly reduce the chance of you biting yourself, and your choice of food should make it non-existent. If you do bite yourself, you should fill your mouth with water to moisten the inside of your mouth, especially pressing the water over the bite to prevent a re-bite.Source: Experience. When I started drinking a glass before every meal, I saw the frequency of my biting myself drop significantly.

When I bite my lip or tongue while eating, does it mean I’m eating too fast?

I can’t believe the answers here! You could be eating too fast, or you could have dental problems. In my case, it was dental problems. I used to have a problem with biting my lips, and my tongue way far in the back, on the side. I would tear it open on a regular basis to the point where I could barely eat. And no doctor could see it, even though it felt like a crater to me! I would use benzocaine liquid to numb it while it healed.I suggest, see a dentist, and tell him about it. If the dentist doesn’t want to fix your teeth, then about all you can do it to eat very slowly, and use Oragel when you do bite somewhere.

I keep biting my lip?

Oh man. I used to do that. I had chapped lips all the time. It's a habit or in my case a nervous tic. lol. Try to catch yourself doing and distract yourself. Mind over matter. You can put a hairband around your wrist and whenever you catch yourself, pop the band. Pain is a good deterrent. Chewing gum helped me stop but if that's not good enough, there is a solution you can put on your lips that taste nasty. Don't remember what the name is but they make it for babies to get them to stop sucking on their thumbs. Hope this helps. Good luck.
