Bony Lump On My Dogs Ribs

Only one of my dogs ribs is poking out on one side?

Tonight my dog, who is a Maltese yorkie mix, was laying on her left side and I was petting her on her right side. On her rib cage I felt something that felt like a bone sticking out and I could push on it and it didn't seem to hurt her or even phase her. I flipped her over and felt the other (left) side and I didn't feel anything. I've read about floating ribs but it seems like in her case the rib only sticks out when she's laying down on her side. Has anyone else had this happen in their dog? Is it just a floating rib?

Just noticed a lump on my dogs left rib cage?

She hasnt had any shots in about a year or so but i dont remember ever feeling lumps then.. and like i said im not sure what shots were given or where at. She is around 6 years old. Ive keept check and so far it hasnt increased or decresed in size. Its not visible by looking at the skin or fur only when you rub a hand down her side. Im going to call tomorrow and explain the situation to them and see what they think. Thanks =)

My dog has a hard lump at the bottom.end of the rib cage on her left side...?

You tell your Mom that hard lumps are the ones to worry about, especially with all the cancer that dogs are showing up with. The vet needs to aspirate it to make sure no cancer cells are hiding in the hard lump. If it is cancer (it will grow fast if it is) at that location, the cancer cells will migrate to the lungs. It might by a simply Lipoma (however they are usually soft, not hard) or even a sebaceous cyst, but it definitely needs to be checked.

Can dogs digest bones?

I don't like to give my dogs bones because they are sharp.Once, my beagle, Costa, snatched a chicken leg (cooked) off my plate, in the garden when we were having a barbecue. I tried to pull it out of her mouth. I could feel a big sharp pointy bit which she swallowed. I was very worried.I was taking her to the vet next day anyway for vaccinations, and I told the vet about her swallowing a chicken bone with sharp bits on. He said not to worry because her stomach acid would do a good job of dissolving it down. He had a feel of her tummy anyway, and said to keep an eye on her. But she was fine.Another time, my friend gave my labrador Harry a raw beef bone (I wasn't too pleased about that as I'd asked him not to feed my dog any bones, knowing that he’s done so before). He and his Missus were looking after Harry whilst I was on holiday. His Missus reported that Harry had diarrhoea in his bed that night. They had to clean it all out and wash the bedding. I was a bit annoyed with him for giving the bone, sorry for Harry that it made him poorly and he had to sleep in his mess all night, but glad in a karma sort of way that it had caused them to do the horrid job of cleaning a pooey bed. I did ask them not to give him bones! So from my experience only, small cooked bones went down ok in a small/medium sized dog. A large raw bone caused diarrhoea in a large dog.I wouldn't purposefully feed my dogs bones once they are able to break through them with adult teeth, but I guess I would not now worry so much if they ever got hold of cooked bones by accident.

Ferret has hard lump near ribs?

I just noticed a hard bone like mass that s near my ferrets ribs, lower right ribs. It doesn t feel the same as the left side. She is a good weight, not losing any, going to the bathroom regularly and eating fine. I do regular exams to make sure I don t feel anything strange. Please give me some insight. And yes, I do plan on taking her to the vet in two weeks. ( there booked) and she is still playing and acting the usual

Hard quarter size lump on rib?

It could just be a calcium deposit which is nothing to worry about. I know people who have had them before, and eventually they go away. You'll know soon enough, and you ought not to worry yourself in the mean time since you've gone to the doctor and had an xray to find out. That's a heck of a lot more to be said than for most of the people on here who inquire about mysterious issues.

My dog has a sort of half-rib?

My dog is a Chihuahua-Dachshund breed. He is very healthy and has very little back problems for his breed. He has regular ribs, but if you feel on his left side, at the very end of his ribcage there is a bone that feels like a rib,but it's about 1/4 the size of his other ribs. It doesn't hurt him (he yelps at any discomfort, so I know) when I touch it or anything. I don't think it's a problem since it's been there since he was a puppy, (he's 3 years old) I was just curious.

Thanks!

Can a lump in a dog right where the last rib sits be a dislocation?

Any lumps should always be checked out by a Vet. It could be a benign fatty tumor, could be a cancerous tumor or it could be a calcification of the bones (calcium deposit/buildup) which can go from non threatening to life threatening Calcinosis Circumscripta, cancer, etc.You should take your dog to the Vet as soon as possible since if it is anything serious, early detection and treatment could be the difference in a good or bad outcome.

Is it safe to feed t-bone steak bones to dogs?

Assuming that what is and isn’t safe for cats is the same for dogs, the answer is only raw. Cooked bones can splinter but raw bones do not, at least not in a dangerous manner. We here about chicken bones being a bad thing for cats but (mammalian) meat bones can be a problem too. I assume that one shouldn’t give a dog chicken bones either and that cooked meat bones are also a problem. But butchers used to sell and may still sell marrow bones for dogs. These are large raw bones, something like a piece of femur, and they are not only safe but very good for dogs. For some reason I’ve never figured out, cats seem able to cope with cooked fish bones. This may also be true for dogs but I don’t know.

How should I deal with my dog's floating rib?

While I can’t know what you are calling a floating rib, I will share my experience. I have an adult female Jack Russell terrier who is now almost 13. I’m guessing at the time frame, but I think around the time she was 8 to 12 mos. I noticed that her last rib … toward the tail, seemed not only shorter, but stuck out a little farther, as well as having that moveable quality to it. I was very concerned as I thought it might have been a break she somehow sustained. I took her to our vet … he said it was a floating rib … not all that uncommon and not to worry about it. After all this time, it has never been any issue whatsoever. In my opinion, if your dog has been diagnosed by a vet as having a floating rib … don’t worry about and do nothing. However, if you have not been to a vet and are not sure it is indeed a floating rib … visit the vet for both your sakes. Good luck!
