How should I use Comfrey Root Powder? Is it safe to use?

I’m not sure what you want to use it for? Yes! Externally. The powder and leaves you can use topically no problem. Avoid using on broken skin for the most part. Not to be used for deep wounds. Use it as an herbal tea wash, herbal bath, in a poultice, make an oil, salve, lotion, etc. The whole plant use of herbs is always more gentle than concentrations, extracts, and isolated derivatives. Plants known to be a posion should be avoided of course. There are liver toxicity concerns over taking comfrey internally from studies. I have on occassion drank a tea made with comfrey leaves (NOT the roots) at my own risk as it says on the bag for external use only. I don’t have liver disease and not on any medications so I’m not concerned for myself as there are herbalists who do drink the tea of the leaves. I mainly use it short term for healing from something in particular. From what I understand there are two species of comfrey, wild comfrey which you don’t want, and cultivated comfrey which is what I use. The root would definitely be more potent than the leaves in any case with much higher concentration of the alkaloids. Always learn about the source of your herbs!I found this nifty quote from here: Balancing the body's pH"The FDA advises against taking Comfrey internally, due to the presence of trace amounts of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA's). In contrast, data published in the journal, Science, by noted biochemist Bruce Ames, Ph.D., of U.C. Berkeley, would indicate that Comfrey taken internally is less toxic or carcinogenic than an equivalent amount of beer. It is probably NOT wise to make Comfrey, or beer, a significant part of your regular diet for an extended period of time."The last part is pretty funny.
