Broken Foot How To Minimize Atrophy

I fell on my arm and it's not broken, how do I decrease the pain?

You will use ice, ice , ice and anti inflammatories such as Ibuprophen. Elevate for edema. See a doctor. But you do not know that it is not broken, as you have not gone to have it looked at.If you have no insurance, you can still go to urgent care, they do X-rays right there now. There are all kinds of fractures, and many bones in the arm a wrist area. The bone does not have to be poking out to be fractured, there are hairline fractures, spiral fractures, etc. etc.Now as stated before, when we injure something, we won't use it due to the pain. This can cause atrophy. If it is fractured and you have another fall, or car accident, you will cause more damage to the fracture.Be well and be careful.

Broken Pinky Riding Horses?

Tuesday Morning I broke my little finger when my horse Reared back and snapped a cross tie and the metal piece hit my finger so hard it broke my bone all the way through. It hurts but if I wrap my ring finger and my little finger together then I could ride with my reins in between my index and middle, I ride english. The orthopedist said not to ride for three whole weeks. I am fourteen and going for an equestrian scholarship so I realize I need to be extra careful that it heals properly, but three weeks sounds awful. I understand maybe I'll go without jumping but not even any flatwork! The doctor said if I cause the bone to slide over so it is no longer even with the other part of the bone then I'll need pins put in but if it's properly wrapped with my splint I should be fine right?

What are the best ways to treat a sheep with a broken leg?

QUORA POLITNESS RULES PREVENT ME FROM PHRASE THIS THE WAY I WANT. IF YOU CAN’T TAKE THE SHEEP TO THE NEAREST LARGE ANIMAL VETERINARIAN CALL ONE TO COME TO YOU. WASTING TIME WITH QUORA IS ANIMAL CRUELTY. THE VETERINARIAN, MIGHT BE ABLE TO SAVE THE SHEEPS LEG, AND THE SHEEP IF YOU HAVENT ALL READY WASTED TOO MUCH TIME. I SAW A SHOW ABOUT A LADY WHO REHABILITATE WILDLIFE. THIS LADY SPECILIZED IN FAWNS ORPHENED WHEN THEIR MOTHERS WERE KILLED MOSTLY CAR ACCIDENTS. THIS ONE FAWN HAD AN INJURED LEG THAT HAD TO BE AMPUTATED. IT WAS JUST FINE. WHEN IT WAS TIME TO RELEASE THE SEASONS FAWNS THE THREE LEGGED FAWN TOOK OFF WITH ALL THE REST.

How best do you mend a broken ankle?

An old friend who was an orthopaedic surgeon once told me (as a joke) that there practically nothing he could do to prevent a fracture from healing! Of course, occasionally the body fails in the task and this is especially true in stress fractures. There are several issues that must be addressed however:if the fracture is displaced, and is not set properly, the bone will heal in the wrong shape. This is why doctors use splints, and surgically inserted metal implants (screws and plates) are used to make sure that the fracture heals with the bone fragments properly alignedMost fractures need a period or 8–16 weeks to heal properly. However, depending on the fracture, movement and rehabilitation can start much earlier. If a surgeon has inserted metal plates and screws, it is often possible to start rehabilitation almost immediately. Always you should be guided by the doctor in charge of your case. Usually this is an orthopaedic surgeon, but many simple fractures can be managed by your GP or orthopaedic physiotherapistIn the case of a broken ankle, the amount of immobilisation, whether you need surgery or not, whether you can rehabilitate without either of these things, totally depends on what is fractured and how badly. A little flake of bone can be pulled off (it’s called an avulsion fracture) and doesn’t need immobilisation or surgery. It’s very painful nonetheless, and sometimes a plaster is used for pain relief for a week or two. As a general principle however, the sooner you can start walking and moving normally, the better. The body is VERY good at healing fractures.

I have problems walking down the stairs but not up the stairs. How can I get better?

You use different muscles climbing; usually you lean into the stairs, and some people use a handrail to help pull them up. Going down stairs takes a lot more balance. Your base brain takes a signal from your upper thigh and hip muscles as part of the balance input. If you strengthen your core, hamstrings, and glutes you will soon be able to walk downstairs like a teenager. If you were disabled and those muscles atrophied, it is normal that your balance would be greatly affected. It is a real pleasure to see that balance come back, and it is relatively easy. The big gain is knowing that your bones are getting stronger too. Weak muscles that don’t pull on bones cause them to become porous (osteo porosis). Porous bones break a lot easier than strong ones, and a hip fracture when you are old and weak is generally a death sentence. Think about it.

What is the best way to break a leg?

Indeed if your life depended on it, the fibula would be the best as a sacrificial lamb. Agree with Jean Marion there, as long as your tormentor lets you get away with it. The entire affair smells of the Saw series of movies somehow...Given that the fibula is to be broken, at short notice and little instrumentation, how to go about it? Here's a WikiHow(ish) step by step guide:Get a hammer or any heavy blunt instrument of suitable size available.Lie on the side with the chosen leg to be broken upwards. If that choice is given to you, choose the side of your dominant hand i.e. right side up for right handers.Feel the bony prominence on the outer part of your ankle. This is the lower end of the fibula. Break it here and your ankle becomes unstable. So choose a point in line with the prominence around 15 cams above it, at least 10 cms. Going too much further up can injure the common peroneal  nerve and cause a 'foot drop'.Lift the 'hammer' and take it all the way back as your shoulder allows you to.Take a deep breath. Do not hold it. Holding breath for too long can knock you out.Remember ye Gods and let it swing.Thump.You should hear, or at least feel, a cracking sound. If not, kindly repeat till you do. Possible side effects include, but are not limited to, a large weal, breaking the other leg and shoulder dislocation. All said, the safest way to 'break a leg' seems to be to join the theatre and do a cracking job on stage. 'Break a leg' is a theatrical idiom for wishing good luck!

How to bend your knee after full leg cast?

Im a 14 year old boy. I've had my right leg in a full leg cast for seven weeks (broke my tibia), I have now got to have my leg in a half cast for four weeks but am really struggling to bend my knee. My doctor said I should be able to bend it fully that night but it's now been three days and I stretch it out almost fully but can barley bend it past the angle it was in for seven weeks.
Thanks, matt

What are the reasons behind the swelling in a leg even after the removal of plaster?

Inorder for the fracture to heal properly, the bone/s is/are aligned properly and immobilised with a plaster cast for around one and a half month or more depending on the type of fracture and the severity. The inflammation post injury and immobility of the affected part causes swelling to buildup along with some muscle atrophy. Since swelling is mostly liquid, it has a tendency to flow downwards because of gravity. When we sit or stand, it is in gravity assisted position so most swelling starts building up at the ankle. Ankle and knee joints have very few lymphnodes to drain the swelling so the leg should be in an elevated position to drain the swelling in the hip region, where there are comparatively more lymphnodes. It is easily managed during Physiotherapy rehabilitation.Cheers.

I sprained my ankle a week ago and instead of my ankle swelling my whole foot is swelling. There are also black splotches on my toes. Is this normal?

Here’s you’d like to know…SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF AN ANKLE FRACTUREDepending on the severity of the problem, the symptoms of a fractured ankle can differ from one person to another. These are the common ones often felt by people.• Swelling and tenderness• Instability when standing or walking• Deformity of the ankleSevere cases include the following and the parent should immediately call the doctor:• Bleeding• Foot is turning bluish gray• Foot or toes become stiff and numb• Pain and swelling from old injuries have returned• Severe soreness• FeverTREATMENT FOR ANKLE FRACTURESWhen you suffer from ankle fractures, it’s best to call the doctor and seek professional help. He or she will be doing a series of tests through x-rays, MRI, or CT where you get to know a detailed report of your injury.Afterward, the doctor may suggest physical treatment, painkillers, crutches, or ankle braces to stop the pain and prevent the injury from becoming worst. In severe cases, a surgery might be necessary to put the bones back together.More so, doctors treat ankle fractures with a brace, splint, or cast. It helps keep the broken bone from stressing and moving while you recover.HOW TO MANAGE AND PREVENT YOUR INJURIESHere are ways you can manage your injuries and prevent them from happening in the future.• Rest so you can recover and heal.• Apply an ice pack for 15 to 20 minutes three or four times a day.• Elevate your ankle when resting.• Follow the doctor’s orders.• Eat a healthy diet for faster recovery.• If you’re going to exercise, follow closely doctor’s orders on how to keep your leg and ankle active.• Wriggle your toes to reduce atrophy or stiffness.• If you are told to wear ankle support, buy the ones that offer quality support.

Is it safe to begin to move my ankle 3 weeks after a non displaced lateral malleolus fracture? I have cramping and tightness in my calf; alternating pointing and flexing my toes helps relieve pain, but I don’t want to hinder the healing of my ankle.

I’m assuming you were treated in a brace or removable cast not with surgery…then absolutely yes. If the fracture has remained nondisplaced for 3 weeks it is likely to remain so. Motion does not hinder healing in a stable fracture and furthermore reduces the risk of DVT or blood clots forming. I always have these patients doing GENTLE non-wt bearing Dorsiflexion and plantar flexion. No twisting of the foot and no walking out of the brace or boot. I then add full range of motion exercises by at least 6 weeks. These fractures almost never displace after a couple weeks if you behave. BTW, unless told otherwise you should be near full weight bearing in the brace or boot by now. THAT speeds bone healing and helps reduce atrophy and stiffness. Good luck and listen to your doctor!
