Bt Infinity Installation - How Does It Work

I keep losing wifi/Internet connection?

I bought a new laptop this week and it keeps losing its internet connection, usually i click on connect and it works straight away and other times it says "limited connection".

My old laptop is still receiving wifi with no problem and so is my housemates laptop...does this mean there is a problem with the laptop or something?

I'm not very good with computers so can you make your answer dummy-proof? lol

Thankssss

BT Infinity is British Telecom rolling out it's own fibre optic cables underground. Does it use existing fibre optics that are in some streets? Some streets already have fibre that Virgin Media uses. Is this the same fibre that BT uses?

No, BT and Virgin (formerly NTL/Telewest/Eurobell/Etc) have separate physical infrastructure networks. One thing to note, although advertised as fibre optic broadband, the fibre cable will only run to the green cabinet in the street. The connection from there into your premises is made with coaxial cable - this applies to both BT and Virgin's networks.

How can I install a VPN inside my BT router?

You cant, it is controlled and monitored by the ISP and you dont have access to its UI. Even if you manage to access it the ISP will simply remove the VPN settings.Get a separate router, there are both high & lower end models you can use. My advice get the night hawk from Netgear, works brilliant for me at home and I only use it for streaming from HBO & Netflix. Here is a list I covered recently NetGear Router VPN Recommendations for Home Users. Its not really necessary you get a higher end model, there are cheaper models with less functionality but work with VPN too. You can get some great options here too Best VPN Routers & VPN Service Providers of the Month.

BT Desktop Help not responding?

and other Desktop. BT state nothing wrong with their software but prob with my desktop.
Run OS Windows 7 64-bit. (recently had Infinity installed). Thanks in anticipation.

Is it mandatory to rent the BT line in the UK even if I do not have internet with BT?

YESIndirectly you will pay BT if you do not pay them directly, and this is why.BT near enough runs the UK regulator OFCOM so they loaded the game so that they could force the British public to pay for a service they know will not be used. Most people under 40 do not even know their land line number - its just that thing they pay £10.50 a month for so that they can get broadband.80% of the 22m UK connections are BT based circuits, and pay BT directly or indirectly a total of £2bn a year for voice rental. 30% of those people make less than 1 call per month - ie no phone connected.According to a 2007 BT consultation on Naked DSL (BT calls this "BLA" - Broadband Line Access), which involves providing a phone line purely for broadband service, there was no demand from ISPs for such a product. The consultation was closed on 16th July 2007 with the conclusion that "there is insufficient rationale to justify pursuing the BLA initiative at this time".I can tell you they did not consult me or anyone I have ever met! 7 million lines sounds like rationale, I guess £700m says otherwise

What is Universal BT?

You the only person as you know.So whats the reason to ask it.But if you want them my answer is Vikalp Sharma is the one and and only BT i.e. Bad trip for this world.Thank you.Historical Facts & latest update on [indo-pak] relations

Does a map of London's broadband cabinets currently exist?

I'm sure it exists within BT.Whether it is accessible I rather doubt. Two suggestions:OneCall OFCOM.They might have it, or they may "persuade" BT to share it. This is "public good" information and there might be a legal obligation.TwoYes, I'm sure you can prepare the map from those sites. It would be the kind of "mash up" some geek could do in a few hours I suspect. Maybe do it as a competition to students? Or post it to Task Rabbit or odesk and see if someone will do it cheaply. That might be more useful: you are probably more interested in "where has access" rather than "where are cabinets (but not where they go to"

I accidentally changed my wireless to WPA from WEP and now it can't detect it..?

I'm using Linksys right now hoping it'll work long enough for this question to be answered. I have Actiontec.. its fine during the day but yesterday and today night it doesn't work all that great. I thought hm maybe changing it to WPA might make a difference.. so I did that on the IP address thing (where you enter you IP address as the web address) and on the actual network but now it can't even detect my internet.. although all the lights are on..

what to do? I want my internet :(
