Business Administration Major

Is business administration a good major?

That depends on what you expect to get for your time and money.

Business administrators are a dime a dozen, so to speak.

To me it is an extremely boring enterprise unless I were paid well for participating or as a result of employment or application of what I learned.

Business administration as taught in colleges can be easily learned from adequate texts, the very sources that colleges use and which are typically written by college professors.

The real world is far more complex than can be discerned by business administration classes.

If you have a lot of cash to burn and a lot of time to waste it, you can take anything you like in college.

I try to select things that are relevant to the welfare of my species and the planet we live on.

Business administration ignores most of those issues.

For a case study of other reasons why I would not want to waste too much time on acquiring theoretical knowledge-based skills of business administration via the high cost of education, consider the outcome of the typical profits-before-people mode of business administration in regard to why we do not have universal health care in the United States while our neighbors do:

Is business administration a good major?

Yes, business is a good path. Although, I think most business schools (I know mine does) require you to pick a concentration (or you could even double concentrate). Those include such things like Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, International Business, etc.

But (again speaking how my school works), I applied as a Business Administration major, and then I don't have to declare my concentrations until the end of my sophomore year (although i already have, and I'm just a freshman). I'm a Information Systems and Finance major just in case you were wondering.

Is Business Administration a good major?

It's the path of least resistance, and more and more employers are starting to recognize that. My advice: try to find a subject that you're actually passionate about and pursue it while you're still doing your undergrad. I say this for three reasons:
1) It's what your undergrad is for. The reason your university forces you to take all the gen. ed./liberal arts classes is to give you the best shot of being exposed to a field that you can be really passionate about, and, unless the computers have become sentient and the revolution has begun, I'm guessing you're human, which means that I can safely assume you're not "passionate" about business admin.
2) Hiring managers don't care what your undergrad is in. They're starting to realize that the majority of business admin majors are people who actively sought out the major that would challenge them the least, and therefore have been left with no distinguishable skill-set after college. If they like you, they'll infer whatever skill-set they're looking for from the major you choose.
3) You can always go back and get your MBA later. Expedited one year programs are becoming more and more common, and programs now commonly accept students with pretty much any undergrad major. The MBA is the only thing that will matter in the long run anyway, and in the meantime, you get to study something that actually interests you.

Business Administration Major and How much math do you need?

Not a whole lot. My concentration was in finance where most of the math is (supposedly) involved. They made us take business calculus as a core requirement and that was it.

I wouldn't sweat about it.

Edit: Tyrael, While advanced math courses are necessary for finance (if you're planning to go for a CFA or Master in Quant Finance. And maybe in MBA. But if you're planning to take the MBA route, we all know it's the name of the school and the networking that matter more than anything), from my experience it wasn't needed at the undergraduate level at all.

And I don't believe they devote a class to trend forecasting at the undergrad level at least not to the level where advanced math is needed. If yours do, you must have went to a school with an extremely good program-even better than the UC system (the one I attended)

Is Business Administration a good major for me?

Business Administration is not a good major because it's too general. It's just a plethora of business classes - accounting, finance, management, marketing, etc. If you're interested in business, or the school offers a concentration within the "Business Administration" major, Accounting and Finance are the two best business majors. In other words, Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting or Finance would be perfectly fine.

Of course, Mechanical Engineering would be better than Business Administration. You just have to be someone who would be able to do the work. Many successful businessmen and women got their undergraduate education in some type of Engineering, then went into business after getting a MBA.

Computer Science would be great also.

You have to study what you enjoy. I would not study Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering just because the job prospects are good and the pay is good. However, you do need to major in something that is going to get you a respectable job, and unfortunately, a general Business Administration degree likely won't cut it.

Do you know why a business administration major would need to take a physics class and lab? How relevant is this course to their field of study?

Generally, taking hard science/STEM classes is something I'd like to see more people do. Even if it is not directly applicable to your major it will broaden your horizon and teach you how to think through problems and their possible solutions in a systematic, analytical way. The analytical skills and ability to wrap your head around a new field of study will be of value to you even if you feel like the actual subject matter is far removed from your major.
