California Trip/ Gas Estimate

How much would it cost in gas, to drive from New York to California?

Basic math >
3000 miles /25mpg =120 gallons x $ 2.50 per gallon =$ 300.00 >
To that you can add the tolls on Indiana and Ohio Turnpikes
Based on a very fast 72 hours coast-to-coast time you have 2 nights on the road , realistically it's going to take you closer to 96-100 hours
Ignore those ridiculous claims of 43 hours made by the beyond -useless online mapping services
Your fastest routing takes you over the GW bridge to I-80W
Take I-80 to Salt Lake City and I-15S
If you're going to LA ,make a left
If you're going to San Francisco .go straight
Safe trip

Why do California have the highest gas price in the USA?

RE: Why [does] California have the highest gas price in the USA?Because a long time ago California chose to go with the automobile as its primary system of transportation for people. As more and more people moved to California the state had to build more and more roads to accommodate all those cars with 1.5 people in them on average. Building and maintaining roads like this is expensive, and that money comes from taxes, much of it (all of it?) from heavy taxes on fuel. And all of those cars stalled in traffic increase the demand for gasoline, and increased demand always increases prices too. Also, due to a near total lack of rail transportation the people are mostly forced into cars and buses to go to work. I am sure the legislature is aware of that and so they will try to fund other things by increasing fuel taxes which the people will have to pay because they have no choice — except to move elsewhere. One wonders how bad things will have to get before people will move out in large numbers. Note that the cost is not just in $$; it is also in lost time which also degrades the quality of life. Delays also decrease economic competitiveness, which has its own costs, such as companies going out of business or moving elsewhere.High population density is expensive in general. If the money is not there for building and maintaining infrastructure then high population density always leads to massive poverty.Just as an aside I personally think that the breaking point which will cause massive depopulation in California will come when they actually get The Big One in Southern California, or a rip on the Cascadia Subduction Zone causing the northern end of the San Andreas to go off too. The housing and infrastructure damage — roads, power, communications, fuel, food distribution, and especially water distribution — from a truly massive earthquake and subsequent fires there will force people to evacuate. It will be so expensive and time-consuming to repair that it will bankrupt the state and require massive Federal intervention, all of which will not encourage people to return or remain there.I hope I am wrong.

How can I estimate the cost of gas for a road trip?

Use the best mileage (fuel economy in miles per gallon, or mpg) estimate for your car, either from you records if you keep them, the mileage readout on your dash if it has one, or the estimates given on the window stickers when you bought your car. If its mostly highway use the highway mileage, otherwise use the city mileage.Figure the length of the trip in miles… Add some extra miles for running around when you get there, and the return miles.Divide the total miles by your fuel economy to get approx. gallons. used.Multiply the gallons by the cost per gallon.Say yo take a 250 mile trip to your spot and your car gets 25 mpg and gas costs $2.50 per gallon.total miles = 2 x 250 + 75 miles running around = 575 milesTotal gallons - 575/25 mpg = 23 gallonsTotal cost = 23 gallons x $2.5/gallon = $57.50

How much does it cost to drive from California to Texas?

I'm going to estimate your gas mileage to be about 25mpg. You will get better mileage if you drive 55 or 60 and worse if you drive 75. That said, the trip is about 1,450 miles, so that's about 58 gallons of gas. Right now gas in California is close to $3.00/gal but it's more like $2.50 in Texas. So lets say an average of $2.75 brings it to $160 in gas. Of course those prices could be very different tomorrow. Its about a 22 hour drive (assuming no traffic), so you probably need a hotel along the way. Deming, NM is the halfway point (again assuming you don't get stuck in traffic in LA, Phoenix, or Tucson). You can Motel 6 it for $40 or pay $70 for someplace nicer. If you are eating fast food on the road, figure $20+ per person, depending on appetite. Less if you pack a cooler, more if you eat at better restaurants.

So for one person,
$160 gas + $40 motel + $40 food = roughly $240.

How much for a ROAD TRIP from Pennsylvania to California?

You don't say where in Pennsylvania to where in California.

So, I assumed Philadelphia to San Diego - which is approx 2650 miles one way. Let's assume you go back from San Francisco, 2880 miles one way, SD to SF is 500 miles (shortest route) = 6030 miles round trip. Let's round it up to 6300 miles just to give a little buffer for side trips, getting lost etc..

Let's assume your car gets 25MPG - you will need 252 gallons of gasoline. Since we can only assume the price of gasoline, let's assume worst case and say it's $5.00 gallon. (If more Middle East countries implode politically, in particular Saudi Arabia - $5/gallon is not unrealistic). You will need $1260.00 for gasoline. By the way gasoline in California is the most expensive in the country, if you pay $3.50 in Penn, they are paying $4.25 in Cal today.

Hotels - roadside hotels, i,e, Motel 8 type places range from $50ish to $150ish a night. All depends on where in the country. If you and your friends are under 21, forget about renting motel rooms.

I would plan on the drive alone requiring 2 overnights each way. It's possible to rotate drivers and not stop at all, but let's assume you stop. 4 nights roadside motel, 1 room @ $100/night = $400.

Without knowing where or how long you will be in Cal it's difficult to estimate hotels there. I would just plan on rooms in Cal being $150/night on average. For discussion lets assume your spend 7 nights in motels in Cal = $1050.

Gas and lodging = $1260 + 1450 = $2710. Divided by 4 = 678 each, let's round up to $680.

Food, just give yourself a daily budget. Assume $10/breakfast, $15/lunch, $20/dinner per person = $45/person/day. X10 days = $450/person.

Spending money.........who knows, give yourself a budget for spending. This is the place that could cost some $. Entry fees into National Parks, tourist stuff (Alcatraz tour), mechanical breakdown, T-shirts, etc.... Say you budget $1000/person total for "extras"?

Per person total = $680 + $450 + $1000 = $2130.

How to cut cost - take turns driving so on the way across country you don't need a motel room. Down side is that you will won't see much at night and you really should stop for an extended rest. Don't eat extravagantly, Buy food in grocery stores vs restaurants. Take a high MPG car, bring back pictures and little else.

What is the average gas price in 2018, California?

There’s not a way that can be precisely calculated, as there is still time left in 2018. However, given the current market situation and the average so far, it is possible to make a reasonable guess. So far, from the first ten months of the year, gasoline prices in California have averaged $3.55 a gallon (thanks GasBuddy!). I think prices will end the year lower than that, probably by 10 or 15 cents a gallon. The reason is that both the oil and gasoline markets are vastly oversupplied, and by extension prices will drop.Hope this was useful!

How much gas money from Chicago to San Jose, California?

2000 total miles divided by the miles per gallon your car gets = how many gallons of gas you will need

how many gallons of gas needed multiplied by cost per gallon = how much gas money you will need

For example:
Let's say your car gets 25 miles per gallon and the cost of one gallon of gas is $4.00

2000 divided by 25 = 80 gallons of gas
80 gallons of gas multiplied by $4 = $320

Why does California have such expensive gas compared to Texas for example ($3.50 vs $2.00)?

According to Gas Buddy, the difference is closer to $.80 per gallon than $1.50.Most of the reason is due to deregulation of the petroleum industry in CA in the 1980s. The number of distributors plummeted by over 80% and the resulting lack of competition lead to price rises.About $.35 is due to higher gasoline taxes in CA.A small portion of the difference is due to pollution control standards, however the major cities in Texas have to meet similar pollution control standards so the difference is not that great any more.
