California Usa Or Sydney/melbourne Australia

How hot is Australia compared to California?

Melbourne and Canberra are by no means the coldest places in Australia. Melbourne gets somewhat bleak in winter but in summer it is hot and dry. 10% of maximum temperatures in Melbourne in summer are over 35°C and the hottest was 46.8°C in February 2009. Melbourne is hotter than Sydney or Brisbane.

California goes as far south as about 32°N. In Australia, 32°S is about Taree, some 200km north of Sydney. More than half of Australia is closer to the equator than any part of California. Northern California is equivalent to Hobart in Tasmania.

California has some hot spots such as Death Valley, the hottest and driest place in the USA. Death Valley is 7800 square kilometres. Central Australia, which gets temperatures similar to those in Death Valley, is 3.5 million square kilometres

Is Sydney a lot like California?

When I have traveled to the US San Francisco felt most like 'home' (Sydney) - liberal, major gay city of the world, mix of architecture old and new, large Asian population, warm and beaches, hilly (although Sydney is not as hilly). Sydney has more waterways, and the harbour is truly spectacular. You feel safe absolutely everywhere in Sydney, but I don't think I could have said the same for San Francisco. Sydney is hotter, sometimes too hot.

Really the main differences are those that relate to Australia/US in general, eg no tipping in Australia, few guns, drive on left etc.

Where in US has similar cost of living to Sydney, Australia?

I would say if you are comparing the cost of living in Sydney's city or Eastern suburbs then cost of living is equal to Manhattan. I found it slightly cheaper to shop in NYC then I do in Sydney. Clothes, food and restaurants are cheaper in NYC.

Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live.

We lived in Rose Bay (East) and were paying almost $500AUD for a 2 bedroom apartment with external laundry.

Manhattan for $500USD which is more then AUD but if you are earning USD in wages it is all relative you would get about the same.

Should I move from Melbourne, Australia to Houston, Texas where my brother lives?

Look into the real cost of living differential…Taxes are higher in Australia, but you are paying for services which in Texas you will have to pay through the nose for.Healthcare, especially if you have a toddler could by itself completely obliterate the income differential if there is one.Education, depends on what you want, but as a general rule, the Victorian public education is far superior to the American public education, so you might end up paying a lot more for private schools. My opinion is that America was great to live in while I was young and single with no kids, but then as soon as I wanted a family life, Europe or Australia became far more attractive. Not only for the additional cost/benefit concerning schools and medical care, but also in terms of general kid friendly lifestyle. In Melbourne, my kids walked to school and back, took bus and train to where they wanted, would go to the beach and come back on foot. They would go to friend’s houses and walk back after dark, In America, not a chance I would allow that…

How long does a cargo ship take from the USA to Australia?

I will say again, and will continue to say time after time, that questions like this invoke a requirement for three data elements - port of departure (POD), port of arrival (POA), and speed. Of the three data elements, the OP has provided none of them.Previous questions of this nature have usually been sufficiently constrained that I could 'fake it'; that is the loose choices allowed for an educated guess. Unfortunately, the US is a very large nation facing three of the seven oceans of the world, and Australia is quite large as well. Multiple routes exist between them, and multiple possibilities exist among 'cargo vessels'.Accordingly, this question is unanswerable as asked.
