Why do some High school students cut class?

When my sister and I were in high school together, we had a fool proof plan for skipping school. We would wait on a morning that we were late, and then my mom would write a note to 'please excuse us' but not put the date or the offense. So we would take that note and go hang out at the mall together and take one another out to lunch. It was exciting, and it was also a bonding experience. We never got in trouble for it, though we eventually confessed to my mother. I always liked school and graduated 27th in a class of more than 300, and my sister took college classes her last year of high school. It's been a long time since we've even lived together, and I wouldn't give up those days for anything. I think you should be mindful of the consequences of skipping school, but you should also be mindful of the consequences of letting life pass you by.

Why do they call high school high school?

Probably because when it was started it was a higher level than the existing school which is now called primary. Education has been 'dumbing down' for generations. In the 1850's a grade five education was all you needed. You could get the same level job you do with a bachelor's today. By the early 20th century, grade 8 became the standard. Then high school by the 60's. Now it's a bachelor's.

When I say 'dumbing down' I mean it. I looked through my father's grade 8 speller. The Latin and Greek roots in that book I didn't encounter until grade 11 or 12 and I graduated from high school in 1960.

At a high school, 30% of the students buy class rings. You select five students at random. Find P( exactly....?

Assuming that the class is VERY large (compared to 5), then every time you pick a student you have 30% chance that they bought a class ring (if there are only 10 students, then only 3 bought class rings--the counting will be different for this case).

This is a Bernoulli experiment, which means the probability of getting n successes is given by:

p(n) = (N c n) .3^n * .7^(N - n)

For n = 2 (2 successes) and N = 5 (five picks), we get:

p(2) = (5 c 2) .3² * .7³
(because 5 - 2 = 3)
-->

(5 c 2) = "five choose two" = 10
-->

p(2) = 10 * .3² * .7³ ~ 0.3087 = 30.87%

The probability of AT LEAST 2 is the probability of two, three, four, or five picks that all have rings. So we have to compute ALL of those...

...or we can realize that AT LEAST 2 means NOT one and NOT 0. So find the probability of that: p(0) + p(1). This is the probability of it NOT happening, so subtract this from 1 to find the probability of it ACTUALLY happening.

p(0) = (5 c 0) * .3⁰ * .7⁵
p(1) = (5 c 1) * .3¹ * .7⁴
--> (n c 0) = 1 and (n c 1) = n

p(0) = .7⁵ ~ 0.16807
p(1) = 5 * .3 * .7⁴ ~ 0.0.36015
--> add them to find the probability of getting 0 or 1

p(0) + p(1) ~ 0.52822 ~ 52.82%
--> subtract for 1 or subtract from 100%

1 - 0.52822 = 0.47178 ~ 47.18%

This is the probability of at least two having it because is the NOT probability of getting the NOT of having at least two (i.e. having 0 or 1).

Why is it called HIGH school?

well because thats when you descover the power of weed XD

How common is it for high school teachers to allow their students to call them by their first names?

I don't know of any data but in my experience, this is very rare in K12 and very common in university. It largely has to do with the culture of these environments in my opinion. The use of Mr or Mrs or Sir or Madam is supposedly used to create an air of authority and respect for teachers where students are compelled to attend. At the university level, a less formal and more collegial atmosphere can be maintained as it is presumed there us some willingness and desire upon the part of the student to attend. In my opinion, much of this is just a traditional or habitual holdover from a bygone era. I would not usually mind my high school students calling me by my first name. I don't believe that the use of Mr or Mrs magically confers respect or authority these days and I don't know that it ever did. It was just a different era with different expectations. I have never taught elementary though so in that environment I might feel like I need to separate myself more from the students. But I would not ever be the lone teacher that allowed students to call him by first name. It really has to be a school wide culture thing.

No one finds me attractive. I'm a high school student and people call me very innocent and treat me like a little kid. How can I be more attractive and mature?

It's not unusual to feel this way in high school. As for people calling you innocent, and treating you like a little kid. Maybe you come off this way to others even if you really aren't. I don't know you, so I can't say for sure.It's hard to change people's perception of you, so your goal should be to work on becoming the person you want to be, but at the same time you should accept yourself. As for becoming more attractive and mature, you will have to define what “attractive” and “mature” means to you, and go from there.Even though people don't see you as attractive, or mature in high school, you get another opportunity to meet new people in college who will hopefully see you as you want to be seen, so keep working on yourself, and be patient while you work on yourself.

Earl Whitecloud is an American high-school student. He is constantly teased?

Earl Whitecloud is an American high-school student. He is constantly teased and bullied by his classmates because he occasionally wears clothing that represents his Native-American heritage. As a result, Earl spends most of his time at school alone, is absent far more than the average student, and performs poorly at school.

As Earl’s teacher, who acutely perceives the problem, you decide to devote a class period to talking about diversity and accepting cultural differences.

What three points will you emphasize the most and why?

Will you involve Earl in the discussion? Why or why not?
