Can 6yr Olds Have Melatonin

Is it safe for a 16-year-old to take 10mg of melatonin if 5 mg isn't enough?

I talked to Dr. Hertoghe at one of the Anti-aging conferences in Las Vegas. He likes a dose of 3 mg initially at bedtime. If you wake up in the middle of the night you can take another 3 mg. He said that when you exceed 6 mg in a 24 hour period you interfere with cortisol production, which is necessary to handle stress (cortisol is the stress hormone).Melatonin rules at night, cortisol rules during the day. These two hormones oppose each other. You want to just replace what is missing in terms of melatonin production, but you do not want to disbalance the hormone balance. This is why I do not like that supplement producers have introduced the 5 mg strength melatonin tablets. If I have problems with either falling asleep or because I wake up at 3 AM in the morning and having problems falling asleep again, I use valerian root. You can add 500mg or 1000mg of valerian root capsules when you first go to sleep. You may repeat that when you have problems at 3 AM falling asleep again. I find that this usually solves my problems.

Is Melatonin safe for children?

Melatonin appears to have some use against circadian rhythm sleep disorders, such as jet lag and delayed sleep phase syndrome. It has been studied for the treatment of cancer, immune disorders, cardiovascular diseases, depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and sexual dysfunction
Melatonin is practically nontoxic and exhibits almost no toxic side effects. However, melatonin taken in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) can lead to overdose because MAOIs inhibit the breakdown of melatonin by the body

while Dimenhydrinate (dramamine) is a drug used to prevent nausea and motion sickness, melatonin is a natural protein (hormone) that helps you sleep. In low doses it cannot be dangerous but talk to your parents that you will have it, before you have.

No.

Can you give a child Melatonin and Benadryl?

Not at the same time, since they both induce drowsiness (sedation) and lethargy. You don't want to depress the respiratory status and induce hypothermia. They both sell over the counter (without prescription), but it doesn't mean that they're not powerful drugs. Always ask the primary care provider about taking OTC medications.Melatonin has been used (Non-FDA Labeled) for: Cancer, Jet lag, Toxicity of drug (acetaminophen overdose), Chemotherapy.Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a neurohormone produced by pinealocytes in the pineal gland during the dark hours of the day-night cycle. Prolonged administration of oral melatonin has reportedly induced phase-setting effects on circadian rhythms, such as the sleep-wake cycle and rest-activity. The hormone has been reported to produce reentrainment of circadian rhythms after time zone shifts, and entrainment of previously free-running rhythms in the blind. In vitro and animal studies have reported that melatonin is capable of inducing direct cytostatic actions on some human cancer cell lines, stimulating host immune responses, and inhibiting release of somatomedin-C.Benadryl (DiphenhydrAMINE hydrochloride) acts as an antihistamine by competing with histamine for receptor sites on effector cells.Overdose:MILD TO MODERATE POISONING: Somnolence, anticholinergic effects (mydriasis, flushing, fever, dry mouth, urinary retention, decreased bowel sounds), tachycardia, mild hypertension, nausea and vomiting are common after overdose. Agitation, confusion and hallucinations may develop with moderate poisoning. SEVERE POISONING: Severe effects may include delirium, psychosis, seizures, coma, hypotension, QRS widening, and ventricular dysrhythmias, including torsades de pointe, but are generally only reported in adults after ingestions of one gram or more of diphenhydrAMINE. Rhabdomyolysis and renal failure may rarely develop in patients with prolonged agitation, coma or seizures.ADVERSE EFFECTS: Mild sedation, dizziness, impaired coordination, and mild anticholinergic effects are common, paradoxical excitation develops in some patients.(Micromedex App)

Is it okay to take expired melatonin?

Yeah, there's an ample safety factor in the expiration date of most drugs. For some drugs, 1 year is critical, particularly drugs in liquid form. In dry tablet form where the tablets have been stored in an air conditioned home, they're still good 1 year after expiration.
