Can A Biology Major Minor In Journalism

What should my 2nd major be? I want to study journalism and something in business. I can’t double major in journalism and marketing. What would be a good 2nd major for me in college?

Business is a funny thing. A Bachelors in almost any field of Business does very little to get someone into a position in anything but sales. An MBA on the other hand can be extremely valuable.I think of it this way - A second major will add a year to your undergraduate degree without a whole lot of benefit. However, if you get a straight journalism degree and take that to an MBA program, you’ll spend two extra years, but have a much more beneficial MBA.It’s basically a Masters for one extra year above your current plan. And if you get into a half-decent school, the networking opportunities are a gold mine.

Is a double major of biology and journalism possible?

Where I went to school, you could choose any majors you wanted to, so long as you passed their qualification exams. I know someone who majored in biology and Chinese! I believe that biology and journalism would be a good combination, as you could then write articles about new developments in medicine. Enjoy! Be all that you can be, and follow your own path!

Can I major in Journalism to get into Med School?

It does not matter what you major in... at all. Infact, I had read an article not long ago from one of the top universities (can't remember which) where it even said they're looking more for non-science majors because they like to have people with different educational backgrounds. English majors are one of the top... so that might be something to consider rather than journalism if you truly are worried about it.

I would just take as many science classes for electives as I could. Volunteer at hospitals asap because that will also increase your chances. Build close relationships with professors that you could later use for references.

Is a dual-major in journalism and biological science a good idea?

If you want to write science articles, sure. But you have to love both, and be a geek at both.If you’re thinking about career prospects, being a technical writer for the biomedical industry might be the thing to do.

What did you major & minor in during college?

Major-Communication
Minor-German

Double major and double minor?

Just about anything is possible - as long as the majors and minors are offered at your school.

General Education - 60 hours
Major in Journalism - 60 hours
Major in English - 60 hours
Minor in Film Studies - 18 hours
Minor in Photography - 18 hours

some of your journalism and English hours will duplicate so let's drop about 12 hours from that combination.

(60+60+60+18+18)-12 = 204 hours. 204/30 = 6.8 years [30 hours is a typical full-time academic year]

The question is "why?"

HR for most related jobs is going to consider English and Journalism to be the same as would be Communication. Even if you were attempting to become a public school teacher, these are very close fields.

Photography as an academic subject is usually in the art department (fine art photography) and not photojournalism (which will be covered in a journalism major) so has little value to the Journalism/English degree for a prospective journalist.

Film studies has a very limited employment market value unless you're hoping to become a film critic with that combination of majors.

In less than 6.8 years, you could have a bachelor's and a master's degree in any of these fields. Generally speaking, a master's has more value than a bachelor's.

Another issue you'll face is that at about 160-180 hours your financial aid will stop and you'll be labeled a professional student. At that point you will be expected to pay your own way.

But, it can be done and would take you about 7 years.

I'm a high school student passionate about biology and journalism. Which career would allow me to do both, and which major should I pursue?

Medical journalism! It sounds like I just smushed your two interests together, but it is a real thing and a super cool field. It sounds exactly like the name—you report on interesting and impactful discoveries going on in whatever scientific field you want to report on. UNC even has a masters program in medical journalism, if you’d like to look into that! Most colleges also have options to design your own major, allowing people to combine multiple diverse interests into a single major. If I were you, I’d double major in biology and journalism or major in one and minor in the other. At the very least, regardless of your major(s), definitely take classes in both fields. You don’t necessarily have to have a degree in a certain area to go into that related field.

Is it a good idea for an aspiring journalist to major in Political Science & minor in History, while relying on journalism internships for experience?

No, it is probably not a good idea. There are classes such as libel law, writing and editing classes and others in which you will learn things that tpu neex to know BEFORE you can be successful in an internship program. You qould be better off getting a degree in Journalism from a university that forces you to get a broad range of lnowledge by limited the number of journalism classes you can take.So you would have minors in both history and political science, like I have double minors in psychology and Earth sciences.

Med school as major and law as minor?

Med School and Law are not done in college. After you grab your Bachelors, you can go to law school or med school. It would be 10 years of college if you wanted to do both. I suggest a biology major and a history minor, as it will prepare you for both med and law school in case you arent sure about what you would like to do

Is a dual major in History and Biological Science a good idea?

A2A. This is a management of free electives.I am not a big fan of double majors because I see no reason for a second major unless you completed the first and want to do graduate work in the second. To make decision about majors, you need to look at your post graduation plans. If you are interested in being a biologist, then a major in biological science and a minor in history makes more sense at this point in your training. If your goal is not to be a scientists, then a history major and biological science may make better sense. As an advisor, I would need to know your goals and your entire schedule to say if a second major is the right idea.
