Can A Grocery Store General Manager Be Transferred Back To Same Store After Leaving

Is it better to work in a restaurant, a grocery store, or retail store?

I know all are stressful. Most jobs are stressful, period. I'm asking which would be the least of the three.

And also, I already have a job. I'll have to leave it, though, once I go back to college (because it's a day job as a bank teller). I've never had a problem finding a job. I found this one in 2 weeks and that was about 3 months ago. I got it over 15 people interviewed. It's average people with average intelligence and average skills or worse that have trouble finding jobs like this. I'm not that person.

Do you feel rushed when you're checking out from the grocery store?

I always feel rushed, which makes me clumsy. I don't know why they hand you everything (change, card, receipt, coupons, whatever) in a big wad, and then expect you to instantly evaporate from their sight. I think it's very bad customer service. Cashiers should wait until the customer is completely away from the counter before starting the next ring. Maybe then the cashiers would discover ways to make it easier for people to leave faster (like actually handing the customers their bags of merchandise, and handing the change wad over in a civilized way). I waited my turn at the counter--I deserve time to get my affairs in order before I have to shove off into the nightmare that is the traffic in the parking lot.

Transferring Panera?

The more notice the better. You're asking your employer to do you a favor and let you transfer to a different store, do them a favor and give them as much time as possible to help you out. Best would have been, "I'd like to move back home. Would you please keep me in mind for a transfer there if another assistant manager position opens up there?" That's better than giving them a deadline.

If after six patient months nothing happens, then move. With the experience you have you can probably get more, similar work without a problem.

How long before i can transfer to another Walmart?

They waived the 6 month requirement a couple years ago, so you shouldn't have a problem transferring at any point. You're not guaranteed a transfer, the same pay, or the same position. You'll want to speak with a member of management at the store you're interested in working, to see what positions they have open and ask questions regarding pay rate. If they have a position you're interested in and when they're ready to bring you into their team, you'll go into the Wire and request a transfer. The Personnel office should be able to help you at any step along the way.

Can an employer FORCE you to transfer? (without even a valid reason!)?

@ Bill right-to-work has NOTHING to do with this, right-to-work relates to unions and union shops....

Q:
Can they LEGALLY do this -- especially since there isn't really a valid reason for transferring me?
A:
YES, they don't need any reason to transfer you; you being exempt or non-exempt has nothing to do with it.

you are LUCKY they are giving you the option, when you said no they could have just fired you.

you said they won't pay any extra this time, does that mean they have in the past?
all the law requires is an employee [regardless of how they are paid salary, hourly, piece rate, or commission] be paid at least the applicable minimum wage and applicable overtime.
if they gave you raises in the past that is great but it had nothing to do with the law requiring it....

they are trying to do the right thing for another manager, you can either help with that which in turn will earn you some respect, show you are a team player, and in the end you will come out a winner;
or
you can make this confrontational (which is what you did), and in the end be unemployed.
you can work with them, and have that in your corner down the road when you need help,
or
you can worry more about what they can and can't do, constantly be in conflict, and never move past this.

it may not seem right or fair to you but it is not always about you... you may not see their reasons as valid but that is not for you to decide, and they don't need your approval.

you won't find a law on the subject because in general there aren't laws that say what is legal; laws generally say what is not legal to do.
