Can A Highschool Student Apply For Grants

High School Freshman Money Grants/Scholarships?

Starting in your freshman year of high school is a great idea in searching for college scholarships. There are things that you can do to increase your chances of getting one in the future. Good grades and SAT scores do pay with most colleges in the form of merit scholarships, and most states do have grant and scholarship programs for those with good grades. Also, get involved in your school and community with activities and clubs because it can help you get scholarships. I will list some free places to locate college scholarships, but some are limited to certain grades.

First, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major's website will list scholarships, too.

Second, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web. This can be done any time.

Third, the high school guidance office has a list of local scholarships and state scholarships & grants. This is to be done in your junior and senior years of high school.

Fourth, fill out the FAFSA form after January 1 of your senior year of high school. It will tap into state and federal grants along with scholarships from the college itself. It is need based. However, it taps into the federal work study program which gives valuable work experience and money.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites, but the best I have located is Scholarship Experts since they have a very thorough and lengthy survey to complete compared to Fastweb. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, hobbies, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website. This can be done any time.

Good luck!

Question about Cal Grant, Do They Only Accept Highschool GPA's?

Laine:

The other respondent is partially correct and partially incorrect - if I tell you that your advisor is correct also, you can probably guess where the other respondent went wrong.

Eligibility for the Cal Grant is established based on your high school grades. College grades are only used to determine whether a Cal Grant recipient is eligible for renewal. If you did not qualify for the Cal Grant when you left high school, you can not qualify later using your college grades.

The other respondent is correct about the deadline. March 2nd is the absolute - no questions asked - no excuses - deadline for Cal Grant application each year. They will not accept late arriving applications except for a small number of community college grants that can be applied for until September.

I'm sorry, but if it's any consolation, most other state educational grants work the same way. In Florida, for example, a student can only qualify for the Bright Futures Scholarship based on high school grades.

If the GPA that you earned in your sophomore and junior years of high school was below 2.0, you will not be able to qualify for a Cal Grant.

I'm sorry for the disappointing news. Good luck in your college work!

P.S. I also want to mention that there IS a special program called the Community College Transfer Entitlement Cal Grant that works a little differently. If you attend a California community college and earn at least a 2.4 GPA at that school, you may be able to qualify for the Cal Grant. I'm not sure if that applies to your situation.

Can a high school student make $3500 in 6 months? What is the best way to receive funding for a study abroad program?

Assuming you have a job at minimum wage (in the United States, that’s $7.25) and work two hours on school days and six hours on weekends, you can make $145 a week. There are around 26 weeks in 6 months, so you would make $3,770 total by the end of it. Of course, you could work longer on weekends if you wanted, and your times would vary, but the gist of it is: Yes, it’s possible. For a study abroad program, many schools offer scholarships. There are also many other scholarships offered by companies that want to sponsor academically promising students. The best way to get a scholarship is to apply for them best you can, very frequently.

I was awarded financial aid without a high school diploma or GED?

In some states, including mine, you can enroll in a community college even if you don't have a HS diploma or GED. However, federal financial aid rules are such that you cannot get financial aid to pay for your college if you don't have a HS diploma or GED. The government granted you aid because you are currently in high school, and the assumption is that you'd finish HS by the time you got to college in the fall. If you do not do so, then it may be the case that your aid will still be in place when you start classes. However, what will most likely happen is that in the middle of the term, or once the term is done, your aid will be revoked. And because you're in the middle of your classes, you'd end up owing the school the money for them. So before you do anything in terms of accepting that aid, talk to both admissions and to financial aid at the college about your situation.

How do college students pay for dorms?

Nobody is really in the same situation and nor do people in the same situation pay for the dorms the same way. Athletes may have all their costs covered or some. People paying out of state tuition obviously have a higher tuition bill making covering the cost of the dorm bill harder. A direct loan is not enough to pay for the dorms, a plus loan would be needed. Some peoples parents pay for their cost of living. Some people work to pay for the cost.
