Can A Job Have You Scheduled To Work A Lower Paying Position Than What You Were Hired For

I just got offered a job at Google. The base pay is 19% lower than my current job. The total comp after bonus and GSU is still 7% lower. I think the opportunity to work at Google would be great, but the comp level is disappointing. What should I do?

[This answer is focused on engineering ladder positions, and may be bad advice for non-engineering positions]The single most important part of your offer is the level that you are being hired at. Until your first promotion, all future raises and refreshes will be based on this level. Your initial offer is also based on this level (although there is significant room to adjust within each level).Total Google compensation is, by design, excellent for equivalent positions. It’s not impossible to find positions that pay more than Google, but it is hard.If your current job pays more than Google is offering, you are probably a reasonable candidate for a Google position that is one level higher. The recruiter is on your side. He wants to hire you. He is incentivized to hire you. He is also an expert on the Google hiring process, and has a strong understanding of what is and is not possible.Tell your recruiter that you are disappointed with your offer. Tell him that you think you are further along in your career than the offer suggests. Tell him that you want an offer that is one level higher with a matching base salary and initial equity grant. The recruiter already knows how realistic this is. Listen carefully to what he says about your chances of getting an offer one level higher.Ignore anything the recruiter says about getting promoted quickly. There are all sorts of true (and untrue) things he can say about this that serve no purpose other than to distract you from getting an offer that is one level higher. If the initial offer is lower than T5 [lower than Senior SWE], consider passing on the opportunity unless they slot you appropriately. Google won't stop being interested in you. The next time you interview you can make sure that you are evaluated at an appropriate level. (Also, if this is clearly your attitude, the recruiter will do what he can to get you the level you want right now.)If the initial offer is T5 or higher, getting slotted at a higher level may be unrealistic. Tell the recruiter that this is what you want. But if your goal is to work at Google at some point, be prepared to accept additional compensation instead. Getting new non-managers in at T6 or higher is a major pain and is not realistic for the vast majority of people who get a T5 offer.

How much should I pay my employee for this position?

I am looking to hire someone to help me transport and setup mobile homes. This person will have to drive the pilot truck in front of me while I am moving oversized loads. They will also have to go under the homes with me to put on tires and block them up and such. I also do some renovating and other carpentry work. I am advertising that the employee does not need any experience just needs to be able to take direction and learn. All they need is a clean driving record. What do you believe would be a fair starting pay? I haven't worked by the hour in years so I'm not familiar with what people are getting these days. I'm located in Vermont. Thanks

Should I find another job or stick it out a little while longer?

I work in a very dysfunctional and poorly managed office. I passed my probationary period but feel like I am lagging as to where I should be 6 months into a job.

The training was very poor. I did not have a training schedule until my 2nd week, and it fell apart not long after. Both directors have personality disorders and there is a serious disconnect of good communication between management and employees. As a result they have had a turnover rate of 12 employees in the last year.

There is also some integrity issues in management as I know of a coworker who was told that he was in line for a promotion only to see another person hired for that job.

There is no real leadership here, loud and disorderly conduct all day in the office. The chatter is nonstop, nobody is held accountable for anything with some issues that I feel have been covered up and consequences not enforced per corporate policies, one manager never comes to work, a lot of gossip, public criticism from other employees...etc

I have worked for different companies in my time out of college and this is not the real world. I am quietly putting in my resume for other jobs at this company, the benefits and pay are great, but I don't know how my performance is viewed by management and how much longer I can do this

I never get any positive feedback. The only time that I ever hear from anybody is when someone wants to complain.

Why are grown adults working minimum-wage jobs?

Very few minimum wage jobs allow a person to develop skills to progress to higher paying jobs.Thinking they do is thinking we still have a labor intensive manufacturing economy.Thinking these are jobs are meant for kids is an indication you don't know what these jobs are. Many of these low wage jobs are working in nursing homes and hospitals helping move patients and cleaning up after them. Many are cleaning offices and bathrooms after the close of business. Many are performing hard labor while kids are in school. Many of these jobs involve pulling the guts out of chickens for processing. Many of those low wage retail and food jobs are at 24 hour places conflicting with school or are the graveyard shift. As for how much they should or should not make, that is a philosophical question. It really depends on whether you believe a business that cannot offer a living wage should be saved by the government subsidizing the employee’s survival.Of course many companies providing wages below the poverty rate are not just profitable, they are highly profitable. McDonalds with no price increases would remain profitable at $15 an hour though it would take about half their profits. In the lower margin world of retail it would take 80% of Walmart’s profits if there were no price increases. Both companies are holding substantial cash to pay in dividends but also to artificially prop up stock prices by buying their stock back.So it really is a question of who pays these people enough to have food, utilities, and housing? The government or their employers? Now the national debate ignores that costs differ. If you make the Arkansas minimum wage $8.50 that the equivalent of making $15 an hour in San Francisco. I know a lot of people in Arkansas who were proud to vote for the state wage increase who think those people in San Francisco are crazy for supporting $15 an hour even though it provides a similar standard of living.

I think my wage is being unfairly cut at work, is there anything I can do?

I've been with this company for about 6 years now. For 5 of these years, I've been in a "higher" position where I make more than most at my location, but my position isn't at every location in my area. For these past 6 years I have never had an issue with my wages or benefits, never had an issue with any bosses, and have always met standards on my yearly reviews. In my area there were once 6 other people with my position, and eventually it dwindled down to where I am now the only one. Even though the removed the position from some locations, they hire for it in others. Monday of this week HR in my area tells me that they are getting rid of my position, and my options are either to continue my position at another location an hour away, or I can stay at my location but take a pay cut. This was not only extremely out of the blue, but then he told me that I have one day to decide. The location he offered to me is an hour away distance wise, but that doesn't include any morning traffic or considering inclement weather (in the middle of winter). The pay cut that he was offering me didn't make sense to me at all because not only do I feel that I deserve what I make, but also this is extremely short notice- doesn't allow me to prepare for anything at all-, and it would put me even below what the rest of my coworkers make. I reached out to other people who used to have my position and their wage never changed when they started another position! I feel like I'm being treated unfairly.

How much should I ask per hour, if working at target? read and guide me please!?

you reply "what the position pays". you NEVER state a price, they have a price they will pay for that position, whoever you are.
