Priming a wall before painting is very important. Primer improves the adhesion of paint and therefore increases durability and life of paint film.Primer before paint lays the foundation of your paint job and can be used on wood, plastered wall, metal, concrete, etc. Applying primer coat over new surfaces reduces the amount of paint being absorbed by the basic original surface. The primer will help you on hiding seams and joints. Self etching primer over old paint?
hello. i have some wheels that iv sanded down but not to bare metal, i have some self etching primer i was wondering if this can be used over old paint/ primer. so the normal primer i would spray on over the etching will stick better so it wont flake off as im going for matt finish so i wont have clear on the wheels and i want these looking good in a few weeks time. thanks
Can i use the primer/sealer Kilz on my ceiling without painting over it?
Beware of the Kilz2 that is water based..it is useless for covering stains..it is good for priming over hard colors or new drywall to seal it..but if the problems on your walls and ceilings are from stains, yellowing of the walls due to smoking, crayons and ink marks it will not seal it and it will "burn" right thru it showing through your finish paint(the marks/stains)..You must use the original kilz that is a solvent base to kill the stains out if this is tthe issue..I am a 37 year experienced painter and when latex kilz came out I tried it a couple of times..and as I say..it is useless for heavy stains and water marks...You cannot use either as a finish paint for where you cut in around the edge of the ceilings with it( latex or solvent based kilz) it will "picture frame" on you showing all around where you cut in.. If it is being sprayed..You can get buy with it but not recommended...but you must be a VERY EXPERIENCED spray person for it not to show from the over lapping of your fan on the sprayer..
Can you use acrylic paint on your shoes without priming it, or will it make my fabric stiff? I am supposed to be decorating my shoes.
Priming isn’t necessary or even, to my knowledge, desirable. But the paint may need help. There are additives you can use with acrylic paint to make them more durable on fabric. Both Liquitex and Golden make these products, called “fabric painting medium,” and there are probably other acrylic brands that make them as well.Of course you could just use specially formulated fabric paint, but I presume this question is because you already have acrylic paint on hand and would prefer not to become a hoarder of every kind of craft product. Fabric painting medium mixed with regular acrylics does seem to work pretty well..Now on shoes in particular: if the shoe is made of fabric (canvas, satin, etc.) and not of leather/faux leather/plastic, acrylic may sink in well enough to have some flexibility and durability even without an additive. I would say this depends on the flex of the shoe itself. If it’s a dress shoe/ heel, for instance, those don’t bend a lot during wear. You might be able to get away with just regular acrylic, though I’d definitely recommend applying it rather thinly to be sure it doesn’t just sit on the surface.If it’s anything less porous, like the aforementioned leather/faux leather/plastic, then acrylic and fabric paints generally are probably not going to do the job at all. Those need to be stained, not painted. (Sharpies can do some interesting work on such shoes as long as they get only gentle use; if the shoes have at least a little bit of porosity, then alcohol- or xylol-based markers may also be good options.)Anything porous but with more flex than dress shoes—such as a tennis shoe/sneaker or espadrilles/sandals—I personally would minimize risk of flaking off or wearing too quickly, by adding in the medium. Better safe than sorry with your wearable masterpieces!
Do you have to use a primer before you paint wood?
Hi Jessica. The grey paint that's already there has taken care of the first job of a primer, sealing the surface. If the grey paint is a year old or more, it may itself need to be primed for stain control, like with a good general purpose primer, like Zinser123. Adhesion and stain control aside, you're really after good "hide", covering that grey well. With or without a primer, plan for 2coats for the best hide. Since primers generally go on white, may as well make the first coat with primer, as you'll also get its additional benefits, and it doesn't cost as much as a premium self-priming top coat (about $25 gal primer vs $35 for top quality wall paint).
How long is too long for primer to sit on a wall before painting the wall?
Well, the cat pee smell won't just go away by itself or with primer... You'll need to remove the urine first. Use liquid TSP, which removes all grease, grime, fecal matter, urine, etc. Use the liquid kind as it isn't toxic, is easier to mix than the powder and doesn't need to be rinsed. If you just prime over the urine, the smell will come back, sooner or later.... likely sooner... Here is a link that sells a product to remove urine odours... You can prime your walls now and paint in a few months without having to re-prime the walls... unless of course you keep putting all sorts of greasy fingers all over the walls. If that's the case, not only will you need to prime again, but you'll need to wash with TSP to remove the grease. If you keep the wall free from grease, you can easily paint over the primer in a few months.

Can I use a white primer paint as regular paint?
It really depends on the quality of the primer. This can be said about paint also. Some primers are thin and watery and the same with some paints. Primers can be very thick and cover well. If you have a decent primer then go ahead and put a couple of coats on the walls and/or ceilings and you should be fine. Most primers have a dead flat finish meaning that they have a dull chalky look and feel to them. Some can be slightly glossy. Be sure to lightly sand between coats and use a good quality roller when you apply the primer. This will help insure that you have a smooth consistent finish when your through. If you want to, you can tint the primer to a color that you like. Tinting the primer also helps it to cover better.
If you paint a wall with primer, will it change anything about the wall itself?
It changes the surface of the wall and yes you can paint on it like regular only better. Primer is made to make your wall a better surface for painting. It helps seal out some contaminants like stains, nicotine, etc. that might bleed through. It reduces color interaction between the previous and current paint layers. Sometimes the old color shows through the new one and causes it to look differently. It seals up porous surfaces so they don't suck up an endless amount of paint, like PVA primer on fresh drywall. It provides ”tooth” which holds paint better than a plain painted surface. And it helps bridge the gap between types of paint since water based paint directly painted on oil based paint will peel. Some primers are better suited to solving specific problems than others. Read the label or ask the salesman for which is best for a specific situation.
