Can my employer legally fire me for not attending a "mandatory meeting" at a time that is outside of my availability?

I am a waitress at a restaurant and my employer is holding a mandatory meeting for all employees at 9pm tonight. I am a breakfast server, and my shifts are usually 7am to 2pm. I have my availability set to where I m not available after 5pm, let alone 9pm which is way too late for me. I go to bed at like 8pm (I know that s early for a 24 year old woman but it s my preference). Can my employer fire me or write me up for not attending? I live in New York state if that matters.

Is it legal to make school events mandatory participation on a weekend?

I was a teacher until I got sick of it and decided to do something else.

The prevailing attitude of educators nowadays is that you have no right to a childhood or a life outside school. The assumption is that any child left unattended is probably (1) doing drugs, or (2) screwing his girlfriend. The schools under the influence of teachers unions are in favor of full employment of teachers and all their policies stem from that, which means expanding the school day and the school year so that more teachers can draw a paycheck.

How many days can you be absent from school?

Individual school districts have their own policies as far as excused absences. Most will allow up to 10 parent excused absences and require that the excuse be turned in within 3 days. Excuses must be for illness, bereavement, doctor’s appointments, court, etc., depending on school policy. In general, state law is as follows:‘Under the law, if a principal or teacher reports to the superintendent or attendance officer that a child has had three (3) unexcused absences, the superintendent or attendance officer MUST serve the child’s parent or guardian with WRITTEN NOTICE of the child’s unexcused absences. Once a parent or guardian is served with such notice, she or he has three (3) days to ensure his or her child’s compliance with the compulsory school law – i.e., attendance in school. If, after three (3) days of receiving notice, the child fails to attend school, the school district MUST proceed with enforcement of the compulsory school law. In this circumstance, the school district files a truancy petition with the local magisterial district justice. A truancy hearing is then scheduled before the magisterial district justice.’ (From the PA Education Law Center)Many schools will now hold a truancy elimination plan meeting with the family before referring the family to the court. Also, once a student has had three unexcused absences, all subsequent absences can require a doctor’s note, so it is important to get a doctor’s note whenever you can and save your parent excuses for when you have a cold or need a mental health day.Pennsylvania Code

Help with stubborn boss & a mandatory work event?

I work full time mon-fri. 9-5 and attend college full time mon-fri. 6-10 evening - my boss was aware of this when I was hired 3 years ago. He wants to hold a company event after work one evening and is stating it is mandatory that I attend. I think it is nice that he would like us to do something as a company, but I cannot afford to miss class - aside from missing important information, I will also loose an absence that I might truely need to use at another point during the semester (over 2 absences lowers your overall grade). I've explained to him that I apprecaite what he is doing, but I cannot skip class. He is stating I have too. I work in NJ, can he legally require I attend the event, or any ideas how to reasonably deal with this?

Can a high school legally withhold your diploma for not going to the graduation ceremony?

Is the school threatening to withhold the piece of paper or withholding recording that the student has graduated? Those are two different things! The purpose of the piece of paper is to put into the attic with the yearbook and high school trophies. No one will ever ask to see the paper. On a college application you fill in your school. The college can get access to your transcript. They don’t care about the diploma. On a job application again you fill in your school. The company may or may not check to see if you graduated. They don’t want to see the paper document.Once you graduate from college, the only people who might contact your high school is if you apply for a job that requires secret or above government clearance. Then they’ll dig. But even they don’t care about the piece of paper.

Is it within legal parameters to require High School students to attend a 7 hour long retreat after school? It's required for a grade and was mentioned in the syllabus, but the sheer length of the event was not mentioned until a week before.

Assuming that this is in a college or university then as long as the activity itself does not involve illegalities, then it would be legal. There may be a POLICY at the school that would make attendance voluntary and dictate whether you could be penalized for not attending, especially since the duration of the event was not mentioned in the syllabus. Check with the school’s “Dean of Students” or similar administrator for more information about policies such as this. There may also be a policy that defines where class activities may be held.Lastly, if you have any kind of disability that would affect your ability to attend or fully participate in the retreat, then, in the USA, the school would have to provide a reasonable accommodation.

Can you suspend one employee for missing a mandatory work day and not another? Even if its your day off?

Last year I was suspended from my job (3 days) for not attending a mandatory work day. Even though I verbally told my Manager months in advance that I would not be able to attend (because of my best friends wedding) that event and emailed them a week before. The event FELL ON MY DAY OFF. My Manager turned me down and I was expected to show.

When the event schedule was put up for THIS YEARS mandatory event, an employees name was missing, Jessica. A couple of us complained and her name was secretly added to the mandatory day schedule two days before the event. They called it a typo.

Behind closed doors, a coworker told me that she was in a union meeting with Jessica and my Manager, and Jessica complained about having to work that mandatory event and was told to write a letter, requesting the day off -- thats what I did? Why did I get turned down?

Im not a union employee. Im a supervisor, sole employee, and they are cashiers in a union. Keep that in mind.

The event came and Jessica didnt show. When I asked my boss why she didn't have to attend, even though they put up signs stating that there are no exceptions, she said that she couldnt tell me because it was a personal issue. But she assured me that there was no favortism. I DO NOT BELIEVE HER.

My question is, do they have the legal write to suspended one person for not coming to a mandatory event and not suspend others? Would the reasoning matter? Should I have just lied about why I needed that day off?
