Can A Small Water Spill Cause Damage To Laminate Flooring

Is water really bad for laminate flooring?

Water on top laminate can and will get into the seams and damage the laminate. It will cause laminate to bubble up. Just topical water that needs to be wiped up before it gets into the seam won t hurt it, but once it gets into the seam it can.
It will never soak in when it sets atop, its the seams that you need to worry about.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar , I ve attended several installation seminars as well as installed a couple 100 ,000 s/f. GL

How do you fix water damage to laminate flooring? How can it be prevented in the future?

In theory, you can replace the damaged planks. Or so you will have been told that before you installed it. In reality, you are probably looking at replacing the entire flooring. (Next time, consider a vinyl plank flooring that has a hard core). If your water damage is caused by a flood or sudden issue… just replace the flooring. If it’s caused by general wear and moisture that comes with life, you can evaluate the floor. (Crawl around on your hands and knees with a flashlight. Run your fingers over seams. Shine the light on the floor at an angle as you go). Chances are you’ll find that it isn’t just the isolated spots of damage you thought it was. But other raised or puffy seams as well. Mark all these flaws with little bits of blue masking tape. Now you’ll know how many planks have to be replaced. And usually almost every plank directly joining these planks will need to be replaced as well.AND… once you start separating the flooring to replace the bad planks… you’ll find that with most (all?) laminate flooring… once the planks are locked in place… then snapped apart and locked back together… they never lock back together as tightly. So new moisture damage will happen twice as fast now.Replace the floor.Strongly consider vinyl plank. (100% Water proof). Smart Core and Cali-Vinyl are both good brands.Tile is also a good options. With the right tile, materials can actually be cheaper than vinyl (or laminate) per square foot. But labor costs are typically much higher.

Is it possible to fix a small warp in a laminate floor from a water spill?

We just had all brand new cherry laminate flooring installed in our kitchen, dining room, and hallway a couple of weeks ago. It was installed with a foam underlayment as a moisture barrier and the floor itself has a moisture-resistant hardboard with a 25-year warranty. Today, I accidentally tripped over the dog's water bowl, spilling quite a bit of water all over the floor and there is a now a very small area that is sort of warping upwards. It really is hardly even noticeable unless you look very closely and you can definitely feel the warp when you touch it. I now have a fan blowing on it as well as the AC going in the room. I am wondering if this small warped area will automatically correct itself and fall back into place once it completely dries out or if those two boards are going to need to be pulled out replaced, which would be a huge, huge pain to do. It's a click and lock laminate and there are no nails or glue. I'm REALLY hoping that this tiny warp will go away once it's all dry since we have the moisture barrier under it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Will dog pee ruin my laminate wood flooring?

I used to know a fellow who was a landlord. He had a no pet policy but occasionally he’d feel sorry for a renter and allow them to keep pets.Almost ALL of the people he allowed to do that, never bothered to clean up after their pets. They never even bothered to potty train them even though he rented homes with big yards. When these people moved out there were laws he had to comply with before renting the property again. With wood floors there were many times he had to replace the subfloor and in extreme cases the joists because the urine had soaked all the way through the sub floor to the joists.Yes, dog pee will most certainly ruin your laminate flooring. You can prevent it from happening by cleaning the mess up immediately after the dog makes it.

If there is a leak causing water to stand on my laminate floors for a few hours, will they dry underneath and be okay?

If there is a leak causing water to stand on my laminate floors for a few hours, will they dry underneath and be okay? There is no way to know for sure except to wait and see. Laminate wooden floors, engineered flooring, and similar products have a lot of seems or joints that can allow water to seep in. The material may also be absorbent, meaning it can buckle and swell, especially with wood laminate. There is also the issue with the subfloor. If the laminate is glued down to concrete, and the seams are very tight, it isn’t likely much moisture made it underneath the floor, but plywood subfloors, and especially particle board or MDF board subflooring can soak up water and warp and swell, causing long term issues. The best practice is to remove as much water as possible while avoiding spreading it out. The best method is probably a wet/dry shop vac, otherwise, towels will do the trick. You can also rent a dehumidifier to remove more water, more quickly, after the spill is cleaned up.One nice thing about laminate flooring is that areas can be removed (it can be a real pain, if the tongue and groove edges are tight, and if the flooring is glued down, most is floating, from my experience), and repaired if it warps or swells.

Can you fix warped laminate flooring?

There is nothing to correct the warping, however, depending on where the the warping is, you may be able to replace the affected pieces.

If you have or can still get the same brand & pattern, you can remove the threshold, reducer strip, transition or whatever was used at the nearest doorway. This needs to be a doorway at the end of a lineal run of flooring.

Use some masking tape & number each piece that needs to come out, including the damaged ones, then make yourself a drawing of everything you have just numbered...as it lays before anything is removed.

Once you've got your everything marked & your drawing made, take a rubber mallet & start knocking the first plank towards the doorway. Continue removing planks from the same row until you are at least one full plank beyond the length of the damaged area(s). If you need to mark one or two more planks, do it now, then add those to your drawing.

From there you should be able to remove the row next to it & so on.

One thing you need to be really careful about is tapping or knocking the edges of the planks. If you have stubborn ones, make yourself a couple of tapping blocks from your extra pieces...cut them from their mating edge (end pieces from end pieces, side pieces from side pieces).

Once you have all the flooring you are going to remove up, make any cuts you need to, then reverse you process & start putting your floor puzzle back together. Here again, you may need your tapping blocks...just be careful of the edges.

All of this is assuming that you don't have the kind of laminate flooring where the seams were glued during installation...if they were, you're out of luck.

If you decide that you cannot remove & replace the damaged planks, you could possibly make them lay flat by using an 16-18ga brad nailer with 1.5" brads shot into the seams at a 20-30 degree angle so that they are hidden by the seam.

If this is a workable solution for you, move your furniture out on a Friday evening & start early Saturday morning...you should be finished by late afternoon & have everything back to normal in time to treat yourselves to dinner out.

Good luck...

Laminate flooring vs Sheet vinyl?

i personally think laminate floor for the cost and upkeep is not long wearing. they do not handle any water source at all and the housekeeper ruined ours by doing the old school mopping...even when we provided the right materials...and children spilling drinks would also be an issue...pets on it to is another issue...it was also hard to keep clean...consistent dust bunnies...and the swifter sweeper just streaked it up...but it is nice at first and people use it because for the cost and install convenience it works...i just think the other choice for the long run is a better choice if you can live with that choice of vinyl in the living area for a long while like...15 plus year for it is long wearing...

i would say it is old school but i have seen it ran all through a whole house and areas rugs were then place on top in some rooms...

we took out the dining room carpet and placed the vinyl in their and it was well worth it.

kids with drinks and the spilling well it happens...but i think would do one of 2 things...either sippy cups with the lids or only drinks when they are sitting and at their small kids table...so they are not walking around with the endless sippy cup all day...this is unnecessary if children have regular meals...sitting to eat at a small table and have a drink then...i worked with young children and did parent education for 25 plus years and now retired...but just a few thoughts there...more eats at the table and less drinking and no carrying the endless cup all day...kids who drink milk or other liquids all day are simple not hungry...so i would work on that...a small kids table and chairs is the ticket next to the huge dining set

i think i would have the vinyl in the kitchen dining areas and i think i would go with some cheap carpet that would go 10 years and then when the kids are older do something nicer in the living area..with the carpet i would have that a no drink and eating zone

this does take some work but i think in the long run you want softness in the living area and another thing to consider is the sound will echo a bit with the vinyl flooring unless you have a small space and lots of furniture.

so several options...hope this helps

How can I fix laminate flooring that has bubbled slightly at the seams?

Some water spilled on my living room floor and wasn't wiped up right away. Now the seams are starting to bubble about 1/8th of an inch on either side of the seam. You can only see it when the light hits it just right. Is there anyway to fix this? If it continues to bubble I know I'll have to replace it. If it stays the way it is the only thing I could think of is to try and mask it with some sort of wood putty.

I've seen some flooring experts respond here so I'm hoping someone has some good ideas for me.
