Can Anybody Explain Me In Simple Words What Is Vpn

What is VPN? How does it work. Please explain it to someone with zero knowledge on it.?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. Here's how it works. You, sitting at home, connect to the Internet as normal and then start the VPN software. This sets sets up (usually) a secured and encrypted connection to another computer/server somewhere in the world. When you go to a website while connected to the VPN the requests are passed on to that other server and then the information is sent to your computer. Because of the encryption process this cannot be filtered or blocked. To anyone looking at your traffic, it's as if you are actually at the remote server location. So if you live in Sweden and you connect to a VPN with a node in the United States, it's as if you are surfing the web from the US, not Sweden.

Once properly connected to the VPN you will have unrestricted access provided that the node you connect to is not restricted.

Anyone looking at your traffic won't be able to see what you are doing, but they will figure out pretty fast that you are using a VPN if they are trying to actively look at your traffic. That in itself will draw attention to you.

Now for some friendly advice. If you are traveling to a country that has banned Facebook I STRONGLY suggest you leave your laptop and phone at home. If you must travel with the laptop for work DO NOT go to the prohibited websites even if you have a VPN.

There is nothing stopping the authorities from searching your laptop when you enter or leave the country. The VPN software itself might be illegal where you are going and that could lead to trouble with the authorities there. If they have laws on the books against websites like Facebook then you will probably see the inside of a jail if caught.

Also, password protect your laptop. If you don't someone could boot it up when you aren't around and install a keylogger. I know someone who went to China a few years ago and someone rifled through their hotel room but nothing was taken. They suspected the police.

I'm not trying to scare you, but Facebook isn't worth going to jail in a foreign country. Check with your Department of State or equivalent to be sure.

If you think I'm kidding about the crazy laws in some places... The link below is about a woman in Afghanistan who was raped by a married man. She was jailed for adultery.

Can someone please explain to me what a DNS leak means in relation to a VPN connection?

So, let's say someone has a VPN connection and from time to time that connection has DNS leaks. When the leak happens, does the VPN connection still offer any protection or does it become unable to do that?

Can someone please explain how does VPN and DMZ work in a networking?

Sorry, but I think a full technical layout of how these technologies work would take pages. I will just tell you that VPN uses secure tunneling to make a connection and carry data over a public network.

DMZ simply means that a computer is given open acces to the internet instead of being protected behind the router/firewall it's connected to.

If you wan tthe loads of info on each, check out the links I've included.

Is using a VPN safe? Is it possible that my personal information can be caught by some technical methods during the time I am using a VPN? If it can be done, how does it work?

All the answers other 32 answers you have read here are unfortunately wrong, wrong, wrong.VPN Services hide your IP address. Period. You will have your traffic encrypted to the service but it is unencrypted from the service to the end-point.When you interact with a website, the VPN service hands traffic back to you. If you click on the wrong thing, you can do irreparable damage to your device. That is true regardless of the VPN service. It is true even if that service has some filtering built into it. Key loggers, Bots, trojans, and all means of nasty things can still cause great harm. And then anything I do while in the VPN can be learned.Additionally, VPN services are, by default, a “man in the middle.” When we create intra-company VPNs, there is no man in the middle. We create a point to point or a company client to company server VPN. When you use a service, you do not know who it is in the middle. It might be good today, but compromised tomorrow. Good luck with that. There is so much you need to disable in your browser to make it truly safe, that most web pages will not display correctly when you lock things down, and lock them down you must, if you really want to be totally safe, even when using a VPN.The Internet is not a safe place. VPNs were not designed to make it safe. There are good and sound reasons for using VPNs. But ‘safety’ is not one of them.A virtual private network essentially is intended to say, you and I are friends who need to share stuff and not let anyone in the middle see what we are sharing. If the other end is evil, then you are most assuredly not safe. If the man in the middle gets corrupted or was always corrupt, or insecure, you are not safe. If you or the other side has been compromised by bad code, you are not safe.

How would you explain what a VPN is to someone who is tragically computer-illiterate?

well, this question will best be answered by using a simple illustration. suppose you are a child and wants to ask your daddy a question but you are too intimidated by him so you ask your mum to ask on your behalf without letting yout daddy know that the question is coming from you. so your mama does your wish. from your Dada's standpoint, it's his wife asking him a question. your daddy will only get to know who really the question came from if your mama exposes you. similarly, when someone connects his computer or phone or any other gadget that can connect to the internet, the person can hide his/her identity by using a third party computer network (using the term loosely) called vpn. so the individual connects his gadget to the intermediate computer (vpn) and that vpn computer (actually it's called a server) connects to the internet. the vpn then fetches whatever information requested by you from the internet and transfer it back to your computer. by so doing, the internet cannot know your real identity since your computer did not make a direct request from the internet, so to speak. the only way that the internet can know your identity is if the vpn intermediary gave your identity up.note that the terminologies have not been used in the strictest of sense in order to enhance understanding since the person in question is a total computer illiterate.

Is a VPN safe to use? I often hear from people that it is not safe as it steals the information and data on a phone.

Yes it is safe. Let me explain it simply. Pretend a letter you’ve written is the information your sending on the network. You don’t want anyone to see what is in that envelope or where its going etc so you wrap it in another envelope addressed to your brother who will open it up and mail the letter inside. That outer envelope is what a VPN is. All VPNs do in take the information you are sending, encrypts it so it is unreadable, except by the two ends of the VPN, and wraps another delivery packet around it.

Can somebody recommend a really good VPN service (paid or free) that will be accessed from China?

I've been with 12vpn (www.12vpn.com) for about two years now - and I've turned dozens upon dozens on to them. Here's why I believe its better than WiTopia and other paid services.— Customer service is simply amazing. If you DM @12vpn on Twitter they will usually respond to you in a matter of minutes (they are on Hong Kong time). You can also send them an old fashioned email and they will respond too, but the DM probobly texts someone's phone and they are alerted right away.— While most paid VPNs will give you multiple IP address or servers to chose from (see screenshot above), 12vpn, with the upfront purchase of one year will also throws in a free software license to Viscocity (http://www.thesparklabs.com/visc...) an OpenVPN client for Mac users which is extremely simple and I've never had a problem with it.— Here's the kicker which (I believe) makes them unique in the market right now. They have three routing options: Full, Zero and Hybrid. Here's what that could do for you:Full: Uses VPN for all Websites.Zero: All routing is manual.Hybrid: Use VPN for selected Websites only.— This hybrid option means you can select only designated Web sites to toggle your VPN allowing you to optimize your speed while browsing. Ergo, you click on a YouTube link and the VPN is off. A minute later you are hit a link to Tudou and your IP automatically reroutes back to mainland China.— WiTopia service is on for $39.99/$59.99/$69.99 a year while 12vpn has its two levels at $35/$69. However, if you simply compare the $35 option from 12vpn that includes OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, L2TP/IPSec, Cisco/IPSec vs. the slightly more expensive $39.99 option from WiTopia that is just PPTP — its a really easy decision.— With your subscription to 12vpn, and I think this is the same with WiTopia it will include an install for your iPad, iPhone and computer(s). There's times when I have many going at once with no problems.
