My 11-year-old son told me he doesn't believe in God. What should I do?
Don’t do anything unless you are capable of an open discussion without condemning his belief or condemning him. Whatever you do, don’t say he’s “going to Hell” or some other threat that will scare him! Recognize that he is different than you, sees the world differently and may be much more logical and reasonable than the average kid. Unlike the ones who accept what parents say, he needs evidence and hasn’t found it yet (mainly because there isn’t any) that there is a god. That’a good sign: he’s intelligent, thoughtful and free-thinking. He may decide to have faith, just because it feels good to some people, but it will be up to him, not you.Your kids are going to think and do many more things that you disagree with and if you try to control these, you’ll just alienate them! Instead, try to get them to discuss morality, codes of behavior and thoughts about humanity, none of which require belief in a god, but can help shape your kids into compassionate, nice, law-abiding people.I had religion forced on me as a child and when I was around your son’s age, began to question the idea of a God. By 16 I was fully atheist. This may not happen to him, but after all, it’s his choice, not yours. Don’t push him away over something that really shouldn’t come between you.

He had within him all the desirable virtues that any individual would seek to aspire, and he fulfils all his moral obligations (maryada). Rama's purity and piety in his intentions and actions inspires affection and devotion for him from a variety of characters from different backgrounds.Mahabharata is about the Dwapara Yuga, which is slightly more corrupt and darker age where people know what to do but no one follows. At that time Krishna showed a path (Just showed) which to follow. If he wants he could finished the whole kurukshetra war in a single day. But he did not do, instead of that he directed Pandavas, so that they will know what to do.Rama told exactly what to do and how to live. On the other hand Krishna gave a choice and explained the results/effects of the path we choose.Let’s look at the people in question, i.e. Ram, Ravana, Krishna and Duryodhana from the point of view of Dharma. Let's make a 2x2 matrix to understand this.As we move on the right hand side along the x-axis (Or the Dharma axis), Dharma is upheld.As we move along the y-axis (Or the Rule-following axis), rules are being followed.Now in Ramayana, Rama upholds Dharma and at the same time follows the rules. While, Ravana doesn't care about the rules. He follows The Law of the Jungle, or matsya nyaya as is mentioned in Indian scriptures. For him, there are no rules (Your property is my property. Your wife is my wife).In Mahabharata, Duryodhana always follows the law to the last letter, but doesn't care to think about the principles or Dharma.Whereas, Krishna is always bending the rules but what for? For upholding Dharma. (Isn't this specifically the reason why HE takes avataras ;) )यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत ।अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् ॥४-७॥"Whenever and wherever there is a decline in dharma. O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of adharma—at that time I descend Myself."In my opinion, people belong to Ramayana are like school kids and Rama is like headmaster. He says what to do, and school kids will follow. And people belong to Mahabharatha are like College guys and Krishna is like a Lecturer. He clearly explains the effects of the paths we choose. He just show the path and its our choice to follow it or not.
