What does it mean when a DJ is hosting a mixtape?

It means they get to talk, scream, and drop their tags/sound effects over all tha songs.

Can I hire someone online to make a DJ mix / Mixtape for me (I have a list of songs)?

Absolutely. Any dj worth his salt would be more than happy to take a list and mix it. The only difference in what you get is how experienced a dj is, and therefore how smooth or exciting a mix is. I wouldn't know how much it costs, every dj charges differently, so be very clear of what your objective is and what you want out of the mix

How can a DJ make money from mixtapes and mash-ups?

The only way to legally make money from mixtapes and/or mashups area to own copy permission from the copyright owners to reproduce each work and into which format (audio only, video and audio, movies, etc). So, either you use all original tracks, or you have copyright permission for each song used. Once either or both requirements are satisfied, you can make money in many different ways:Selling the mixesPosting the mixes on services like youtube where you can receive adrevenue per viewGetting paid or sponsored to make a specific mix for someone or businessLike others have said, most money will not come from mixtapes or mashups because they usually will not have permission to sell. If they do have permission to sell, a lot of the profits are probably going to the copyright holders. The best money a DJ can make are selling own original songs, being paid for performances, and/or selling own branded merchandise. You can also be an entrepreneur DJ, and try and break into a sub market like doing tutorials, reviews, etc. And possibly make a lot of money that way as well, if you play it right.

Am I allowed to use industry instrumentals on my mixtape?

Hey Jay,

1. Technically, it is never "legal" to use copyrighted music without permission, Even if you are not selling it, the unauthorized "distribution" of music is still illegal (except for strict educational purposes).

2. You already have some good insight in terms of where to distribute your music. Facebook, Myspace, YouTube, DatPiff, SoundCloud, and ReverbNation are probably the best places to gain some popularity and recognition, especially if your music is really good. Trying doing a Google search for some articles about this. You should use them all for maximum exposure. Be strategic and do your research.

3. You can't afford to worry about people stealing your lyrics. Besides, your lyrics are legally copyrighted as soon as you record them. Just make sure you keep your master recordings backed up and you should be "A" o.k. When you become more successful, you can pay to submit your recordings to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office so there is an official record, but this isn't necessary.

4. Yes, you can sell anything that you create yourself or otherwise have permission to sell.

* Actually, at the following website, you can download all beats for free, royalty-free, and with unlimited license. What that means is that you have permission to use, distribute, and even sell your recordings using these beats:

I wish you much success in your endeavors.

Can I master my mixtape in my FL Studio? Will it sound professional or will I need to do it in the studio?

It really depends on your hardware, if you are making a 'professional level' song you should make sure you have a strong sound card or even sound interface like the Scarlett solo, 2i2...etc. You should also use high quality plugins for better sound mastering, like the iZotope plug-ins. They are pretty high quality. Anything other than the default if usually preferred*. But really it doesn't matter if your hardware is high quality, it will help you be able to hear certain frequencies which interfere with your track. Now to remove these frequencies you can't just use the normal EQ plugin, as it requires very high precision.Of course there are many ways u can do this. You don't absolutely NEED high end hardware or any hardware at all, and you could just use the built in plugins but it'll just make your life easier and potentially help clean up a muddy mix. Goodluck, Hope you do well! And send me the link if you upload it!
