Do French natives often confuse "dessous” and "dessus" in spoken exchanges? How obvious is the difference to native speakers? Is it so obvious that most will never confuse the two?

Hey thanks for the A2A. My first thought also was to answer “never ever” because the difference between [y] and [u] is phonemic in French and the example of shit and sheet is excellent. BUT I then realized that if no one is confused when speaking you can of course often wonder if you heard right when listening. It’s not that easy to find an example because most often that not, the sentence goes like this “en dessous” vs. “au dessus” and the preposition also helps to understand which one was pronounced. But sometimes you don’t use the preposition like in this dialog :—T’as vu ma chemise bleue je la trouve pas dans l’armoire ?—Tu regardes la mauvaise étagère, c’est dans celle du dessus/dessous.(—Have you seen my blue shirt, I can’t find it in the cupboard?/—You’re looking on the wrong shelf, the shirts are on the one above/underneath (or is it below?) )Here you can see that the contracted article is the same in both cases and if you’re not sure you’ve heard [u] or [y] you can’t understand which shelf to look at.But yeah. Basically we don’t mix up the words, we just sometimes don’t know if we heard right :)
