Can Cats Have Nightmares

Do cats have nightmares?

Oh yes! Cats have dreams and nightmares. My cats will twitch, purr, growl and/or meow in there sleep. They are often dreaming of catching rodents or birds.
If you think your cat is being distressed by the nightmares she is having, try gently waking her up. Sometimes with my cat if I try to wake him up he will not realize what is happening and try to bite or scratching thinking you are apart of the dream, so be ready to move away if you need to. Remember, it is nothing against you if she does scratch or bite because it is her instincts reacting to fear. She can’t control it.
Also try petting her while she is sleeping to see if it will calm her down when she has nightmares. Your smell and touch may reassure her in her sleep.

Does your cat have nightmares?

My cat had a nightmare last night. She also just got declawed a few days ago. I feel really bad. I awoke to her running in circles on my stomach and it sounded like she was attacking something. When I started petting her... she calmed down and fell asleep really fast. Anyone elses cat have nightmares?

Do cats have nightmares?

Interesting question. My dog dreams, for sure, he yips and yelps softly and he pedals his legs in his sleep. If he has nightmares, they are not of the kind where he wakes up snarling. So if dogs can recall moments in their dreams, I would think cats could, too. However there is also Henri the cat, whose daylight hours are somewhat of a nightmare. If you haven't seen this video, enjoy!

My cat is having nightmares, what should I do?

How do you know they are nightmares? Cats are very light sleepers by nature and what may seem to be a violent awakening because of fear, may have been caused by something else/something external, like another animal being near.If it is definitely not anything external, consult a vet about possibilities of anxiety in felines. I have no idea what they would say in all honesty.

I've been having nightmares about big cats?

Ok, so I almost NEVER have nightmares... But recently, I don't know, I've been having dreams about big wildcats, like a tiger or lion. I'm not afraid of cats at all! I love cats actually! So I find it strange the two nightmares I've had in the past month (the first nightmares I've remembered in years) are about wild cats! I'll describe them briefly.

Dream 1: I'm with some friends (not real life friends, but I'm friends with them in my dream), and we are at some house like thing with a water park connected to an ocean in the backyard. We're swimming around when I notice there is a black panther in the distance swimming. We try to get away before it notices us, but it sees us and starts chasing us. We then get out of the water, run through the house, and jump in a Jeep car and drive off with the panther chasing us closely. That is when I woke up and that is all I remember.

Dream 2 (I don't remember as much about this one): I was at some ranch style house with some people (I don't know them in real life but we were like family in the dream). We were all outside, and I was reading a large textbook when a mountain lion showed up. It tried to attack me, but I blocked it with the textbook. The dream continued with me defending myself against the mountain lion, then I woke up.

Any idea why I'm having these dreams? What could it mean? Is there a reason I never get hurt in the dreams?

How to know if a cat is having a nightmare?

If he wakes up screaming and then reaches for his dream journal.

My cat keeps having nightmares what can I do?

Well, you wont be able to prevent a nightmare, but you can wake her up if you notice she's twitching a lot in her sleep- that way she's not waking up startled.

How can you tell if your cat is having a nightmare?

I have 2 cats that I can absolutely tell because they twitch and growl and are startled when waking them up. Poor babies! I often wonder what plagues them. All of my cats have been rescued from the outdoors, so maybe they are remembering fights or predators. :(

Do cats know when their owners are having a nightmare?

Yes. Bella will lightly tap my face to wake me. My other cats will be sitting around me on the bed. My most recent nightmare was after staying up to watch “A Streetcar named Desire”. It was made in 1951, before I was born. Unfortuately, Marlon Brando's character Stanley's attitude toward women reminded me too much of my father. After Bella woke me I got up and looked around the house. The sound of glass shattering had been so real I was sure something was broken. The cats followed me. Ok maybe they were hoping for a 3AM snack. I didn't find anything broken and went back to bed. In my bed, in my home with my pets I felt safe again. The nightmare is over.

Why is my cat having nightmares? Do they suffer from PTSD like humans? He has a sad history due the fact that he had been literally thrown out of his previous home and forced to survive outside on his own for months.

Look, I am not a professional cat psychiatrist, but I have some experience with cats. I would say yes - it may not be exactly “PTSD”, but pretty much all living animals with a brain are capable of feeling, emotions, have dreams and can suffer from psychical pain, traumas, fear or depressions.Their brains are more simple, they are not capable to think in so advanced ways as we can, they don’t comprehend the complexness of our society, but still, they have feelings.I know some cats that had very cruel “childhood”, were born to abandoned mother who soon died and they suffered a lot before they were found and adopted by some people, and these cats are “different” compared to cats that were nursed by friendly humans and who never suffered at all. They are much more grateful for getting fed and for having a shelter, if someone is friendly to them, they can appreciate it a lot, unlike spoiled cats who never experienced anything else than people petting and cuddling them. And they also have nightmares. I even heard from people who adopted them, that when they travelled with this cat to place where they found it (family cabin at a village), it become extremely scared and didn’t even want to get out of a car. It had some bad memories. So yes, animals have feelings and may suffer from mental trauma.
