I've asked my father about getting a fish, hamster, or rat in the next few months and the chance is quite high that I can have one. I've had both fish and hamsters before, but never a rat. My main concern is the short life expectancy for all three animals. We also have two cats and two dogs in the house, but they never bothered the fish we had before nor the hamster. I know that the fish wouldn't keep me up at night, but I couldn't exactly do anything with them, and I know that hamsters are nocturnal, but they are trainable. I think rats are the same way, but I can't remember. So, what is the pros/cons of hamsters and rats? And what breed of hamster would be the best kind to get? (If it was a rat it would just be the normal white rat if I got one.)

Other people have been saying you shouldn't keep your dwarf hammie alone, but if she's been alone for a while now it may be very difficult to introduce another one.. Like other people have been saying: 5 gallons is very small..If you think about it; hamsters run miles upon miles in the wild..5 gallons wouldn't allow enough room to run, eat, drink, and sleep. I would say go with at least 10 gallons. I think there's a such thing as a 15 gallon (?) ..if so that may be a good happy-medium.. Good Luck :)

One time we were gone overnight and when we got home our 2 dwarf hamsters had gotten out of their cage. I got the treat bag, they knew the sound, and they came right to me!I spent a lot of time with our teddy bear hamster (he was so fascinating to watch groom). He broke out of his cage once ( finally figured out how he was doing it, also fascinating, he was sooooo smart) and he was behind my washer and dryer.
