Can I Counsel People With A Bachelors Degree

Jobs for people with a bachelors degree in psychology?

I think you'd be great in social work. I also had a bachelors in Psychology, and I chose the MSW.

Social Work is not an across the board poorly paid profession, although some social workers choose to work for non-profits that pay lower than industry salaries. This is their choice, however, and they do it because they believe in it.

However, a licensed clinical social worker can earn an excellent living - in California where I live, the federal government starts an LCSW at $82,500. My friends in private practice make well over a hundred thousand a year. Even an MSW, unlicensed and right out of college, can start at $67,900 with the VA, depending on locality pay.

The difference between psychology and social work is that psychology deals more with mental health issues, and social work deals with the person in their environment, which can include mental health, family of origin, current living situation, work and social issues, etc.

Ironically, a licensed social worker with a masters in social work can legally counsel, a person with a masters in psychology cannot. A therapist can be an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) or an MFT (Marriage and Family Therapist.) These are masters level degrees, and are the ones doing most of the counseling these days. For my money, the masters in Social Work is more flexible, since you're not limited to marriage and family therapy, you can counsel in other areas, and also you can be a case manager, guidance counselor, life coach, work in employee assistance in corporations, work in management in social non-profits, personnel, etc.

My advice is to go for the MSW, it incorporates everything you'd like to do, and offers tremendous flexibility down the road should you choose a different area to work in.

Best of luck to you.

Can you counsel people with an associates degree?

You need a license in the state you plan to provide mental health counseling. A license protects you from any liability in case a client decides to sue. A masters degree which results in licensure is required.

Do psychiatrists with only bachelors degrees make less money than those with masters & PhD’s?

There are no practicing psychiatrists without Master’s Degrees or Phd’s.

How can I become a psychological counselor without a master's degree?

You really can’t. Some people go for addiction counselling which I do believe you can achieve at a BA level but otherwise you need to have a masters or doctorate in order to professionally counsel people.

What can I do with a masters degree in psychology?

With a master's degree in Psychology or probably better yet, Community or Applied Psychology, you could eventually take your board exams and become a licensed counselor. You could even specialize in marriage and family therapy, chemical dependency counseling, rehabilitative counseling, school and vocational counseling, or just the general area. Usually, these programs will not be listed on the graduate bulletin under the psychology heading; they usually fall under Human Services, Community Counseling, or Applied Psychology headings, but all are masters degree programs and have a nice starting/entry level salary. If you would like to become a clinical psychologist or researcher, that will require a Ph.D or Psy. D, there is just no getting around that with those types of careers. If you want to do therapy and counsel clients, than the other routes I mentioned previously will get you there and will allow you to finish at a faster rate.

What qualifications do I need to become a counselor / therapist?

I am not interested in being a psychiatrist, just a therapist. Either for marriage counseling, or for people who just need counseling in general.

I've looked online and am having difficulty finding the necessary qualifications for such a position. Anyone who is a therapist, what qualifications do I need to start a career in the counseling / therapy field? I've seen some programs that offer Bachelor's in Psychology -- is that what I need?

Answers from people who work in the field are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What therapeutic counseling work in the US can a person do with a BA in psychology?

My guess is that this has changed, but--in some states, in the seventies--there were some opportunities for therapists.  I had a female fellow classmate who had a job being held for her in Oregon, once she had acquirred her undergrad diploma. One may also practice under the label of Pastoral Counseling, in some situations. Nowadays, in my view, we are far too much into advanced degrees, licensing and other professional credentials. Besides, in Californa, e.g., the number of counseling hours required for the MFC license was initially 1200...which is now something like 3000. This is just nuts. I have known some people with a B.A. and a good accumulation of workshops..who are better than just about any therapist I have ever encountered. And, studies by people like Carkhuff and Berenson have shown that--generally speaking--the WORST therapists are the ones with the highest medical/academic credential standing on the professional "totem pole." HONEST. ; )Of course, one has to get paid, so this may be a conundrum. Perhaps find an alternative institution for the M.A., M.S. or PhD...and make a LOT of contacts. If you can locate a multidisciplinary clinic with an M.D., D.O. or MSW on staff, perhaps they'll hire you...and bill via their license. Good luck.

What kind of jobs can you get with a psychology degree or a sociology degree?

If you are referring to the associates level, not much, unfortunately. Even with a bachelors, those two fields don't have a lot to offer. This is why a lot of people turn to social work, as the opportunities are much broader with a BSW.Now, if you go to the the masters level with psych, there are a few more options available in the field. Case management, intake, and other entry-level positions are the common offerings. With sociology, it isn't as easy to find work, as the field is very contained. Also notable is that if you have a masters degree in any subject, you can usually find a job teaching at a community college.Good luck! Comment below if I can provide further clarification.
