I want to be an interior designer?

I am an interior designer and think it's great that at the age of 15 you already know what you want to do! The fact that your family comes to you when they need design help is enough to say that you ARE creative. With experience and knowledge you will become a better designer. Throughout college I wasn't as creative as I am today, but that's because I've learned a great deal by interning and working in the field.

Just beware that being an interior designer isn't all glam as HGTV makes it seem. Those people are really interior decorators (not all but the majority). You will need to know how to build things just as an architect does. There is a program called AUTOCAD and like it or not (everyone hates it) you will need to know it!!!! Especially if you want to go into commercial design. That is another thing you will have to decide, do you want to do residential or commercial design? I am in commercial and work on restaurants, spas, etc. I have a blast!

It's not hard to get a job as an interior designer. Architectural firms are always looking for designers (this also depends on your location). My first job I made $29,000 salary, but I'm not in the greatest city to make loads of money. I am now working for a new company and I am making a lot more!!

To prepare yourself now, learn about products (i.e. furniture, upholstery, etc.). Get familiar with the latest and greatest design products. A great resource is Interior Design magazine (they also have a good website www.interiordesign.net), Metropolis, & Contract magazine.

Also, it may sound intimidating, but contact a local firm and ask if you could just come over for a bit to check out what an interior designer does, what environment they work in. My previous firm and current firm have high school students do that all the time!!!!!!!

If you decide to go into interior design, go to a good school and intern as much as possible.

I love my job, really!! You sound like you have a good eye and don't doubt yourself! You'd be surprise what you can design! The best reward within this job is designing and creating a space and then after it's executed, to actually walk through it and say to yourself, "wow, I actually made this!" It's an incredible feeling!

Hope all this helped and good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
