I was testing this over the week. If you completely skip over the field without placing anything in it *should allow you to skip over it (I say should because one of my tests seemed to require the number no matter what). If it doesn't skip over, I tried two tests that may help you. The biggest problem is that I think there are two sign in forms right now. One test was with a valid mobile number, which validation was never sent to. I was able to access account settings after the initial setup and eliminate the number as long as I gave a secondary email. The other test I chose a specific phone number (that wasn't even in my area) and that one allowed me to proceed (800 and 877 number don't work, neither do 000 and 555 numbers). However this test was also done the the version of the form that allowed me to put 4444444444 as a valid phone number and also allowed me to skip the field entirely.

Yahoo has been sold and the people running it now are not the same people that created it.
