Can I Have A Detailed Explanation Of Stem Cells

Could someone please explain the basics of stem cell research?

Please explain what stem cell research is all about and what they are trying to do and the science behind the research. I.E. how they could grow a replicate organ of your own using stem cell research.

Stem cell homeowork questions?

1) I'm not really sure what this question is talking about
2) how does this have to do with stem cells - unless they are referring to embryonic stem cells. In which you'd need basic fertilization to occur before the cells could start to divide??
3) In vitro/vivo fertilization ?
4) embryonic / adult - but you can also break it down based on organs...?
5) There are many purposes to stem cell research... I guess the main goal is to fix genetic diseases
6) not sure
7) the use of unwanted fetuses. however this should be coming to an end since the developments of the new technique to reprogram dermal cells to stem cells
8) its not all embryonic research

Don't stem cells undergo apoptosis?When?

Like all cells, stem cells undergo apoptosis when they are detected to be dysfunctional or aberrant. These situations arise when mutation or genetic damage causes them to lose vital features that normally signal other cells (as well as organelles within itself) that everything is ok -- when these signals are lost, the cell is programmed to die, either from within, or from other lymphocytic/monocytic cells that instruct them to die.

The other reason cells undergo apoptosis is senescence, but this does not really apply to stem cells.

How Will Stem Cells Impact the Future of Medicine?

They can be used for Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant. Currently, you would have to have a donor, or if you parents saved your stem cells when you were born, from the umbilical cord, you could have your own transplanted instead of someone else. Or you could have your own given to a family member that needed a bone marrow transplant. The other way to extract stem cells is through fat removal. Yes, fat has stem cells and there are banks that store them for you just like the cord blood banks. That is the current use. However, using stem cells for research can lead to many other uses including growth of nerve cells and pancreatic cells and other damaged cells in the body. The possibilities are limitless. It is a very exciting field. Contrary to some, they don't have to be gotten from dead fetuses.

How much does it cost to store stem cells?

This is an excellent question that finds applicability in financial assessment of both private and public stem cell “banks”.The short answer to the question as written is “not alot”. Stem cells can be stored in several different ways as detailed below. For brevity, I have not ptovided literature citations. If requested in “comments” to my answer, I shall fortify my claims with valid citations as soon as possible. For the purposes of this discussion, “successful” storage shall indicate any storage technique which results in recovery of >50 % of the initial stem cells based on assays of colony forming viability. Costs of preparation for storage, including controlled rate freezing, are considered separately from storage costs. On some cases, viability will be specified as “quantitative recovery” indicating that all of the original of the original cell preparation's ability to form colonies was recovered after storage. Again, the extent to which that cell preparation lost colony forming activity due to processing and independently of freezing shall be separately specified.Hal E Broxmeyer, Ph.D., is Chairman of Microbiology / Immunology at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. When I worked with Hal to develop processing and storage techniques for cord blood hematopoietic stem cells, he was Professor of Medicine. Hal is a leader in the field and THE pioneer in quantitation of stem cell viability after prolonged storage by various methods. His insight in this respect drove him to store multiple aliquots of identical stem cell preparations so that these could individually be assessed.Hal Broxmeyer and I have found that stem cells can be successfully stored for prolonged periods of time (at least 25 years, and probably alot longer) by merely keeping the frozen packets in liquid nitrogen (under the liquid line in any liquid nitrogen tank) .(To be continued)…
