He said the client was willing to send a large retainer. I checked with a few senior attorneys who had seen this scam. It’s not just in China, but every once in a while, an attorney will be contacted by a person who claims that a company in the US owes them money. Here’s what happens. They wire over a large retainer, sometimes tends of thousands of dollars. The attorney starts working on the collection process. The client then claims that they were able to settle the debt on their own, and instructs the lawyer to return the retainer, minus a small sum for their work. The attorney returns most of the retainer. After a while, the attorney gets a call from the bank saying that the original transfer in did not go through, but the transfer out did. The attorney has lost tens of thousands of dollars. Fortunately, I used to sell on eBay during college and law school. I saw this scam frequently. Someone offers to buy a product and instead of buying it through eBay, they want to make a side deal and send you the money by check. Just send the item to an address that they specify, and they’ll send a little extra for your trouble, but they need the item urgently for a birthday present. I never went for it. Usually the buyer had a new account with no feedback, so I ignored them.I vet clients very carefully, and I would only work for a client if I’m sure they are legitimate. Otherwise, I’ll have to turn down the work.
