Can I Just Ask A Tattoo Artist To Draw Me Up Something

Having a tattoo artist draw up something?

I have been working with a tattoo artist on a tattoo that i want. He drew up something and i didn't like it. I gave a deposit already. I plan on getting a tattoo from him regardless. Just wanted to know how many times (without him getting upset) i can ask him to draw something different. I have an idea in my head i just cant draw or i would do it. Im looking for a tree with roots and an anchor intertwined in the roots. If any of you can draw email me. juslisenk@hotmail.com.

Can I just ask a tattoo artist to draw me up something?

i have a small tattoo on my forearm of an alien and i want it somehow incorporated i to a half sleeve. I know what kinds of thing i want in it but i dont have any specific example/pictures or anything. Can I just ask the artist to draw something up?

Is it rude to draw your own custom tattoo, instead of letting the artist draw something up for you?

I have an idea for my next tattoo. I drew my first one & asked the artist to polish it (but don't CHANGE it) She did exactly as i asked & i love it.

I've drawn out my second tattoo and have a really great artist lined up. But i've been getting a lot of crap from my friends who are big into tattoo culture, they keep telling me that its annoying and rude to come into a shop and say "This is what i want, NO exceptions."

Before i got my first tattoo i went around to a some shops and told the artists what i wanted. "A Steampunk butterfly made of clockwork/gears" One artist came back with a huge (a full back piece) new school design, which was cool, just not what i wanted.

Another charged me $100 up front as a "deposit". He couldn't have spent more than 30 min sketching a small outline of a butterfly with some floating gears and keys inside. When i explained to him i really wanted interconnected gears (so they looked like they would work a machine) he got REALLY flustered and told me to come back when "i knew what i wanted." Mind you. He had three weeks with several reference pictures to think up something nicer than what he gave me.

So i finally just sketched it myself, then traced it with a sharpie, then made it bigger so all the details made sense, then traced the whole thing one last time over a light board working out all the kinks, it took me 7 1/2 hours to get it right and i will love it forever.

So is it really that rude to come in with a finished design in hand?

How long does it usually take a tattoo artist to draw up a tattoo?

Without knowing what the artist is drawing up, it's hard to say too much. I will generalize where possible.

First of all, definitely call. Don't be rude, but do check in.

A point to consider is that the work is easy, yes, but they don't have time immediately in their schedule to do it. My artist has been known to make comments about how a given sketch is simple, but if she's not in the right headspace due to other stuff happening it won't come out well.

Also, artists... are artists. Kind of like research (my area), sometimes it's hard to attach a time to a given task unless it's really, really simple. This isn't a given here, just another thing to think about.

My suggestion would be to touch bases with the artist. They might be flaking on you, but could just as easily just have not found the time - or was even waiting for something from you (you don't mention if you've talked to him/her since, so I don't know).

As an aside, my artist & the others in her shop tend to have something ready for a client to see anywhere from 1-4 weeks before an appointment. This is enough time to think it out, and doesn't place undue pressure on anyone.

How long does it take for a tattoo artist to draw a design up and then contact the client?

A lot of it depends on how intricate the design is, and ow busy the artist is. When is your appointment? How much time do you have before you have your consultation about the design to finalize it? If I were you I would call and ask if they've had a chance to look at it.
