What Are My Rights w/ an Impounded Car? Can I get My Stuff? Can I leave It?
Because I lost my job in october, I kept putting off paying a pair of parking tickets I got in late September; and I put it off too long as my car got impounded. Procrastination plus worry about when I would be employed again kept me from using what little savings I had to pay it. I was wrong; no way around that. However, in on Monday, I reimbark on the career path - and a better one, thank god - and will be back to good shape. So, what about the car? A few questions: I really don't care about it as it is a 95 Camry. - Can I just say "screw it" and leave it? - If so, can I get my belongings from inside the car back? I will buy a new car - Will I still be on the hook for towing or do they sell it and make it up from there? - Will this preclude me, assuming I take care of the two tickets, from registering the new car? I don’t know where you are but those offences would not get your car impounded by themselves in the UK. Smoking is only an offence in a car in the presence of a minor and the penalty is a £50 fine with no points on the licence. Not wearing your seatbelt carries a fixed penalty notice fine of £100 and no points on the licence. Using your handheld phone carries a fine of £100 and six points on your licence, I think. For a car to be impounded, you need to be driving without insurance directly or indirectly. What I mean by indirectly is that if you have a provisional licence and you are not supervised by someone entitled to supervise a learner, any insurance you have is void, so you would be driving without insurance.If you think your car has been improperly impounded ask a lawyer for advice. If you’re a member of the AA or RAC, they’ll give you such advice for free. Citizens Advice will also advise.If you’re not in the UK, I do not know what rules may apply to enable the police to impound a car.

How can I get my plates off an impounded car?
My car got impounded a month ago, the DA said I wouldn't be able to get the car out until my case is settled. I come to find out that I could have taken the car out at anytime. The fees are currently $2XXX to get the car out. I come to the decision that I no longer want the car. I know I can just call my insurance company and switch the cars but how can I get the plates off the car to put on the new car I'm about to purchase. How would I go about this? The impound lot already said that I can't go to get anything from the car without paying the X amount of dollars and take the car out, to get whatever I want out the car. Purchasing new plates isn't a problem for me. But I know that if I purchase new plates I need to surrender the old ones. Can some please clarify this for me. Your help is GREATLY appritiated. My boyfriend got arrested and my car got impounded, what should i do?
so now my boyfriend is in jail and wont go to court for 4 days, he was driving my car while i was at work and it got impounded. i went to the station but no one really told me what to do. what can i do for him? what can i do for myself (im really depressed, my house keys are in the car so i cant go home, im staying in a hotel) and what can i do to get my car out?

Suggest you 1st talk to your parents about getting a loan from them, to help pay this all off. You only need the make/model/year and VIN # to buy insurance. That will most likely be your 1st step. Since in most states to get a car registered, need proof of insurance. While getting it registered, will need to know how to get your license reinstated, since could be suspended due to the registration and no insurance. http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/ http://www.dmv.ny.gov/ IF, you live in NJ, you should have a NJ license vs a NY license? But, could be that your school is in NY, so licensed there? I suggest you contact both states to see where you should be properly licensed and registered. Now, it could be that you wont be able to get your license reinstated, till the judge rules ok, and then bring back proof to the DMV. Now, you must do this ASAP, since every day it sits in storage, they add fees, which I believe is around $30 per day, so as of today, could be around $300, plus the tow fee. But, tow place wont let you move it, (till), you have car insurance and the car properly registered. And if, you do not get your license reinstated before the court date, then, suggest you bring a friend that has a valid license to drive it home for you. This is going to be an expensive mess and lesson learned. Get on the phone, or have someone with you to drive you to either DMV, based on where you should be licensed/registered.
How do I get my car out of impound to register it if i need to register it to get it out of impound? HELP!?
My car was impounded yesterday because I never registered it when when I moved to CA. The tabs were way outdated and my insurance wasn't current...my bad...:( I was told by the cop that I could get my car out if I got it registered. I did get insurance today but I don't know how I'm supposed to get it registered w/the DMV (who needs to see it to register it) when I can't get it "out of jail" w/out it being registered... it's a catch-22... please help!!! Any info would be soooo appreciated!

You have to call the arresting agency (the police department that arrested your boyfriend), ask them if there are any holds on the car. If they say no, then find out where the car is being stored at. You want to do this as soon as possible because every day the price of storage goes up. If you find that you can get it out, You'll have to get the paperwork and mail it to him in LA County jail or if he has a lawyer, get his lawyer to take it to him so that he can sign the car over to you. Go to the DMV and get the car transfered to your name and you'll be able to get it out. I wish you all the best of luck!!! They took my husband right before Christmas. Is there any way to get back an impounded car in Tijuana?
My best advice to you on this matter, is to leave the car right where it is! The Mexican police have a long history or some pretty strange dealings, and when you go down to try to get the car out of the impound, you run a real good chance of being charged with whatever crime they say took place to impound the car in the first place! They have a much different point of view on probable cause in Mexico, and have been known to legally hold a non-citizen "hostage", or as they call it, on bond, until your family comes up with some ridiculous amount of money! I would consider losing a car to be getting off easy when it has anything to do with the police in Tijuana, or any other Mexican City!
What do I do if I can't afford to get my vehicle out of impound?
If you don’t want the car and don’t need anything out of it you can just leave it with them, depending on it’s value they will eventually obtain Garage Lien papers and offer it for sale or if it’s value is too low they will sell it to a savage yard for it’s scrap value (usually $100–$500 depending on the price of metal at the time) Most towers will not pursue the charges with you but some do. Be careful, if your license plates are still on the car and the state that the car is registered in requires that you return them then you should discuss this with the Police and see if they will give you the plates or a suitable receipt for DMV. It can hurt to talk to the tow operator, depending on the cars value they may negotiate the charges or accept the title in lieu of the charges.
