Can I Survive Without College

Could one survive college without a laptop?

Yes, it's doable.

There's a good chance there are multiple computer labs you can use when you need to access something online or to work on a paper or something, and you should find out where they are, what their hours are, and how crowded they ordinarily get. Get a gmail account and when you're done working on a file, save it and then email it to yourself using gmail as well as saving it to a USB drive; that way if you lose your USB drive or something goes wrong with gmail you'll still have a copy. And yes, you will undoubtedly need to pay for your printing, but you won't need to buy a printer and pay for paper and ink, so it won't be as much of an additional cost as it seems.

A huge advantage is that you can put in the hours at school and then go home with everything done and not have to feel as if you should be studying. At midterms and finals you will probably want to be especially careful to plan well because more people than usual will be using the labs.

Just because you don't have a laptop on the first day of class doesn't mean you can't get one later. If, once you start the term, you come to the conclusion that a laptop or a desktop of your own would make your life easier enough that it's worth the cost, then you can always change your mind. You'll have a better idea than you do now of exactly what you want. And you'll qualify for student discounts once you have your school email address, so you won't be paying as much as you might pay now.

So if I were you, I'd start the term planning on not having a laptop, and then reassess a few weeks later.

I hope you have a great semester.

How can someone survive without a college degree these days?

I've been jumping around from major to major, college to college, and cant find anything thats satisfies me.
I've been in school for nearly 3 years now, and I'm taking a break this next semester.

The problem is, I hate school and really dont want to go back. But I'm no fool. I know people need a full degree to get even the simplest jobs these days.

I need some form of assurance that people without a college degree can make something of themselves. That they can be successful and/or financially comfortable without a degree.

What can people do nowadays, in order to survive, as someone who did not complete college? What direction could they go in? What fields could/should they pursue? What can people do for themselves to be successful without going to school?

I just want some perspective here.

Can I survive in a college dorm without buying a college meal plan?

I agree with various other things people have said (and did anyone say you could probably pick up a meal plan later if you decide you need to?), but a few other things.

Some dorms are very restrictive on the types of equipment you can operate in your room (and your roommates will know, and RA's probably, as well as smells escaping and your washing a lot of dishes in the bathroom, etc., etc.). So first, find out what you're allowed and what you're not allowed. And also find out if there are communal kitchens anywhere on campus that you could be allowed access to (you could cook up a bunch of stuff, then refrigerate it, for example).

Most dorms seem to allow microwave ovens though and really you can cook just about anything in the world in one unless you want to "brown" things. Just that along with fresh foods, and packaged/canned/dried foods (healthy ones if you want) *could* allow you to eat all your meals in the dorm if you really need or want to.

Check out some of these links on cooking in microwave ovens, and you'll see that they're for *much more* than simply reheating things:

There are also some ways to prepare all kinds of foods in slow cookers, rice cookers, and one guy even uses an electric coffee maker quite creatively** so again you'll have to find out what equipment is allowed and what isn't.

**** ADDED LATER****
Oh, and P.S.
I think most dorm rooms will either allow small frig's or have ones you can rent, etc. That's really essential. You can buy a pretty big one for $60+ easily if you shop around... some of the better choices we found when outfitting my son for college were at places like Home Depot.

HTH, and good luck!

Can I survive in college park, maryland without a car?

I live in Washington, DC and do not have a car. Have not had one in almost 30 years. I use the public transportation and do not miss nor would I know what to do with a car if I had one. Before you get a car here, you better make sure that you have a parking space.

This is my help from Washington, D.C. United States of America.
Please pick an answer as the best answer, even if it is not mine.

Can I survive freshman year of college without a meal plan?

I am currently a High school senior and I plan on attending Florida State University in the fall. My dad and I were going over finances and even with financial aid, it looks like money is going to be really tight. I am willing to make sacrifices such as living in an older dorm that has a community a bathroom if it means that I can make it through college with minimal or no loans and not be a burden on my parents.
We were looking at meal plans and I realized how expensive they were. Seriously, I would never eat 7 dollars worth of food in a single sitting at home (not counting eating out).

The dorm I will be staying in does not require a meal plan, comes with a mini fridge and there is a small community kitchen on every floor. My future roommate says that she would be willing to share cooking responsibilities so that we take turns being in charge of dinner. Maybe I cook one day and make enough leftovers for the next day as well, then she cooks for the next two days, the I cook, etc.

I generally consider myself a responsible person I currently have straight A's in 6 AP classes at an arts school, and I normally cook 2-3 nights a week for my entire family, but my friends and parents are worried that I won't have time to shop/ ability to carry groceries on the bus, access to the kitchen... and I have to buy and bring cooking supplies.

Does this sound like a feasible plan? Or should I just give in and get some sort of meal plan?

What is life like without a college degree?

Life is what you make it.Don't have to have a college degree to live life? If you don't want to go to school right out of high school that's fine, if you don't wanna go back until you're 25 that's whatever, if you don't go back at all well cool. I hate the parents who put the pressure on their kids to decide instantly what they want to go to school for and shove university down their throat. My parents were never like that and I went back and got whatever I wanted to take. Half of the percentage of people who go to university right after highschool usually end up dropping out, failing the course, or feel like they've failed their parents because they didn't make it.My nephew is a prime example on doing things on his own terms and own pace. He's 3 and you cannot tell him what todo or how todo it. He needs todo it on his own terms & I really don't blame him because I'm the exact same way. (Stubborn) When a person is ready todo something, they'll do it. Don't pressure them because all you're going todo is stress yourself out for trying to get them todo something, and you'll stress the person you're pushing making this discouraged. In all, you don't need a degree to live life. Sure you'll make more money and I think it's great when people get their post secondary education. But I also think it's great if people like their jobs they do to earn a living without having post secondary. It’s your life so you choose what you want todo. Don't let others pressure you into anything you don't want to.
