I know essays are generally in third person, so "our" should be left out, but I'm writing about art and contemporary American society and I think I've overused the phrase "American society" and "American culture". Speak in the vernacular. Never avoid using a word you would normally use. When you write, everything you write should be all YOU, not what just words on paper. Since it's a writing assignment, your teacher would be an idiot to punish you in any way for your use of vocabulary. Use the word bastard! Then your essay would have voice. Edit: I've always been in advanced English classes and I used the word shiit and azz in essays. I have never gotten a grade lower than an A. If your teacher has an issue with the words you use, challenge them because that's ignorance.
