Can My Boss Not Really Decide When I Take My Break

If your boss breaks his/her own rules, can you really have confidence in his/her leadership?

My analogy is as follows:

Sounds like the blind leading the blind to me!

What should you do if your 64 year-old male boss decided to reward your excellent work (you are female) by giving you a luxury weekend spa break...and decided to come along too?

So, did the invitation come with the knowledge that the boss would be coming too, or did the boss just show up at the spa weekend?  Does the boss just truly enjoy spa days and only wants to have some company to chit chat while getting pedicures?  Does the boss show any signs of having any sexual interest in the employee? It's possible that the employee and boss have such a close relationship that the boss knows that the employee likes the spa and the employee knows the boss likes to go to and it could seem like a natural thing to do together in some circumstances. However, let's assume that this is unwanted personal interest.  I have been on the receiving end of unwanted attention from a male coworker when we were on a business trip together.  I reported the behaviour to my boss and told him I would never go an trip with that coworker again.  If the offender was my boss, that's a tough situation.  First, I'd explain that the attention was unwanted.  In my case, I might say something like: "Thanks for the thought, but I don't actually like the spa, and also I don't feel like that would be an appropriate activity for us to do together.  I'd like to maintain the professional level of our relationship."If he gets the message and no further uncomfortable invites occur, then that's good.  If not, be ready to look for another job.  If you are in a company with an HR department, let them know about the inappropriate behaviour, he may have done it before and may do it again.

I am 27, I had decided to quit my job and take a break, However my boss told me that he has plans to make me AVP in 2 months. What should I do?

I have had this nonesense given to me before when I resigned to go to a better job. Like yourself, suddenly I was told by my line manager, I would be made Section Leader by the end of that year.   Like a fool I accepted the Counter-offer, only to find that the role that I was given at my original employer was to be withdrawn after 6 months. I would suggest that if they were going to make you AVP withing 2 months (a short space of time) then they would have told you long before now.  If you can be assured that the company you are going to is stable and is not going to "fall over" for financial or other reasons, take the job.  The company you are working for probably have no intention of giving you a better job, but just want to keep you on their books as you are cheaper than buying somenone in. Research the situation carefullyBest of luck. Chris R

Employee rest breaks (California)?

Do employers HAVE to give one paid 10 minute break (4 hrs) and one unpaid 30 (5 hrs) My finances work asked her to sign a paper that would take her 30 min break away and not compensate with another paid 10 minute break? Is that illegal even if she signed the paper?

I am quitting my job because of my boss and taking a break for 2-3 months. Will that affect my career?

I did this a few times in my youth. It doesn't help future job searches if you do it like I did. Finding and retaining reliable people is a challenge for HR. If it's a one-off I would say you can explain it but if it becomes a pattern (like it did with me) you may need to evaluate underlying causes as I did and take action.I started a consulting company five years ago, now I have control. After I determined that a problem existed and that the solution was to go on my own I did just that. It was the only path that made sense. I do not recommend this to anyone. It's very difficult and quite different from traditional employment.Drawbacks I've experienced from this choice…No support from gurus, I've had to pay when I needed help. If you work at a company there is a pretty good chance there is someone there who is smarter and more experienced that is willing to help. Your career will advance when this is true.I'm in charge of obtaining new business. At a larger firm this would be handled by a specific department. I have everything at stake thus it's my job to make sure it works. While you're doing this you'll have less time to sleep or live a life without the benefit of an advertising staff.Keeping the books and the accounts out of the red. More time spent doing things outside your job description.Handling complaints as well as tons of other communications, email, postal mail, telephone, and meetings.Constant skill development AND finding economical sources of current information as well as keeping up with a direction of study that has a future need and maintaining focus in these areas.By the way, I still have to work while all this takes place. So with this in mind. Staying with a good company, that you investigated prior to applying, is far better for career advancement.Learning how to deal with problematic people is something you will need to master no matter where you work. I've had some real challenging clients some that really pushed the limits, a few that I get uncomfortable when I have to work with them, but I need to work.

I was fired for taking a break to eat?

I was let go from a company I have been with for over 15months because I decided to take a 10 min break to eat lunch. My manager showed up and said I can only take my break after 4 hours from the time I start which is 2pm-10pm..it was 5pm when I decided to take a short break. He started arguing with me and raising his hand at me like I was his 5 year old son. I came into work the next day and was told I was being fired, his reason was that I was giving him to many problems. I asked what problems he was talking about and he said he verbally spoke to me about them numberous times, I replied thats false and you never gave me any write ups for other than a 1 time incident in which I was not wearing my safety glasses, which was around 10 months before this happened. I tired fighting for my job by taking with the other manager that hired me into the company and also the main boss all of which told me to give them a call. I have been calling for the past week and wanting to know if the termination is final or if I can get another shot but they keep telling me they have no word on the matter or they just dont pick up their phones. Will I be able to file for unemployment as I believe this is unfair termination, 2 other workers where fired in the same month I was both from my shift. Also there is no employee hand book nor anything thats says when you are allowed to eat and also I was working with a coworker at the time and all he got was a slap on the wrist.

If I don't take my (not at a fixed time) 30 minute lunch break at work, should I be allowed to leave 30 minutes earlier?

A2A.Generally, no. Jobs typically have standard working hours that promote interaction among coworkers, and offer reliable times when customers can expect to connect with the businessA good way of thinking about this is to ask yourself whether every other employee could pursue the same plan that you're proposing. Obviously the business will be closing 30 minutes early every day if that happened. That said, not every job is like this. If you're an unique individual and there an no requirements for you to be there on a set schedule, then maybe you can work out something more flexible.Lunch breaks, and breaks in general are mean to provide a time to refresh before continuing work. As an employer, I would be concerned about an employee that was trying to manipulate their workday this way. Perhaps this is not the right job for them, or perhaps they have specific problems they need to bring up like picking up a child at a certain time or similar. When in doubt, ask. You'll quickly find out the answer you seek, even if it is not what you hope for.Good luck!

Girlfriend won't let me break up with her. Says she has "Rape Insurance"?

The first thing you need to do is to go down to the police station and have a talk with a policeman. You need to have it recorded that you came in for the talk with the policeman about your GF. You need to inform the police about what you are being threatened with by her .. and for them to know that this girl has you panicked - - and that she could cause your life serious problems. I've seen men go to prison for these types of alligations.

BTW ... are either of you minors ? If she is a minor, and you are not a minor .. there is a BIG prob here for you.

If you really wanted to get serious with it .. you could have the police go with you to talk to her while you break up with her. You could then file a Protective Order for yourself ON HER. It would be great if you could get her on tape saying all these things, too -- so she could not deny them. If you did this - then you would need to stay completely away from this girl ... never even saying hi.

At one time, in my State, if a person was being stalked - they had to go tell the police and it be on record that the stalking was happening - before the police would do anything about it the second time.

If this girl would do this to you - and if she REALLY wants you -- she may find other ways to trap you ... like getting pregnant.

The more she gets her way with you - the worse she will probably get. If she is forcing you to have sex - you could holler rape from her, too.

You just need to figure out what your choices are .. then decide how much you really want to get away with from her - as to which choice you decide to use.
