Can I use my SSN to obtain a credit card as an F-1 visa holder? What other legal things can I do with the SSN?

Yes, you can obtain a credit card, a bank loan for cars, and file your income tax, using your SSN. Getting a driver’s license is another possibility, if you can clear the test.Note that potential lenders will look at your credit score and income. An SSN is often the first thing they ask. But for your credit score to grow, you need someone to give you credit first. Start with your local credit union.

How can I rent a car in the US with just a debit card, with no SSN or credit card?

Yes, there are rental companies that cater to international drivers who have no SSN or credit cards. They require your (local) international driving license, a deposit, payment of insurance and you should be able to rent the car.Since I am affiliated with such a company, I do not want to share any links, but search for local rental car places that cater to international drivers.I also have heard good things about Turo.

I put in a wrong SSN when signing up for Netspend Debit card. What should I do?

While I was registering a Netspend debit card I put in a wrong SSN that I found on fakenamegenerator.com. I thought this was a good idea at the time. Well I lost that number and I need it to activate the card. Is there a way I can get the number changed over to my real SSN? Should I just send for a new card and put in the same information as last time only with my real SSN? I'm afraid there are going to be legal repercussions for opening a debit card under my same identity only with two different SSNs. Honestly what should I do because I really need a re loadable debit card with direct deposit. Thank you in advance. Anymore questions I'll be glad to edit this post and answer.

What if i give the last 4 digits of SSN?

I agree with your first answer, call your Father to alert him. They can use the last four digits to gain access to bank accounts, etc. and with the Date of Birth they can do just about anything. Write the three Credit Reporting agencies and report this, and freeze his Credit Report. This is very serious.

Don't EVER give ANY info over the telephone, even your own info.
If they are legit tell them to give you a written request.

Can you use a dead persons social security number?

Yesillegally, of course. This is part of a broader type of identity theft called ghosting. One of the most famous—albeit fictional—examples of this is Don Draper of Mad Men. Don took on the identity of his superior officer in the Korean Conflict, complete with his SSN.A “real world” example, also in the entertainment industry, was the actor Wallace Ford. Ford was born as Samuel Jones in the UK. His was not a happy boyhood, however, and he ended up riding the rails as a boy hobo, stowing away aboard freight trains in North America.Jones threw in with another boy hobo, one Wallace Ford. They were in a train wreck. Jones survived, Ford did not. Jones then assumed his dead companion’s identity who was an ideal candidate since he was approximately the same age, no one claimed his remains and his death was never officially recorded.Ford (born Jones) went on to star on Broadway and in Hollywood films with all documentary evidence, including SSN, of the dead boy. He filed his taxes using that number as he did when he applied for a U.S. Passport for a return to England. Ford only revealed that he had been a ghoster in 1966, shortly before he died.A less glamorous example of people taking on dead SSNs are illegal immigrants to the United States. They buy such SSNs to work as field hands and in other low level employment such as slaughterhouses (photo below). In such industries employers rarely check validity of a worker’s SSN.When the immigrant becomes legal and gets their own SSN, they can have their earnings moved from the dead SSN to their own without penalty. While at first blush this may seem wrong, the number holder did perform the work after all.Dead SSNs are available through Social Security’s Death Master List which is passed to the Dept. of Commerce's National Technical Information Service (NTIS) Anyone can access SSN information via the NTIS website. The record for one person costs $10.Successful ghosting works when separate government agencies do not share a total exchange of information. A ghoster can obtain a passport or Social Security benefits with a dead SSN because the agencies do not cross check for a death certificate. As you might expect, computerization of vital records and powerful search engines are making it more difficult to ghost. Most ghosts use their dead SSNs not to steal, but rather to make a new start in life, much like our fictitious Don Draper.
