Can My Normal Dvd Writer Read A Blue-ray Dvd Or I Must Buy A Blue-ray Writer

Can you copy/burn Blu-Ray with DVD drive?

I'm completely new to Blu-Ray, but I'm getting a new Sony Vaio laptop for Christmas and it comes with Blu-Ray disc support and does the whole DVD/CD player/burner as well. Will the laptop be able to copy Blu-Ray discs and/or burn Blu-Ray files onto a blank Blu-Ray (or DVD-R)? Also, if my laptop can only play Blu-Ray and not burn or copy then where can I find a nice external Blu-Ray burner?

Can I play a Blu-ray disk on a PC DVD drive?

The answer is no. Although you can play a DVD in a Blu-ray disc player, you cannot play a Blu-ray Disc in a DVD player. The reason is that Blu-ray Discs are embedded with more video and audio information than a DVD player is designed to read. In addition, the "pits" used to store the information on a Blu-ray disc are much smaller than a DVD, which requires a blue laser to read the information, whereas DVD players use red lasers.Solution for playing Blu-ray disc on regular DVD playerFor those people who don't have a Blu-ray Disc player but are favor of watching high definition movies Blu-ray movies, it would be pain for you to find that you are out of luck to put your pricey Blu-ray movies into your standard DVD players. Blu-Ray disc vs. DVD?

To answer your question simply, BluRay is one of the 2 new hidef DVD formats. It is made by a partnership between Sony & Samsung. The increase in picture quality from DVD to Blu Ray is abought the same as going from VHS to DVD; a big difference. Of course since Blu Ray is newer it's going to cost more but that will change in time. Not all movies are coming out in Blu Ray since there is another hidef format called HD DVD that it's competing against. It's up to the movie studios as to which format they're going to use. This could be a format war like between VHS & Betamax back in the70's.

Can Blu-rays + DVDs play on a regular DVD player?

DVDs, yes; Blu-rays, no. Blu-ray players use a narrower bandwidth of laser, violet-blue in colour [hence Blu-ray], thus enabling a greater amount of storage on a disc. Both formats are optical disc formats, where a laser reads the pits embedded in the polycarbonate layers of the disc and convert the stream to an analogue video signal. Simple physics dictate that a DVD player cannot play a Blu-ray because the laser simply will not “fit” the pits. Conversely, a Blu-ray player can play DVDs because its laser, being narrower, can read the pits.

Is there a way to make my DVD player play Blu-Ray discs?

To use 8K Player , simply insert your DVD-Video disc in the computer and it will automatically display the disc’s DVD menu screen. You need to use your mouse to select items on the menu items. You can also use navigational buttons using the DVD Player Controller. If set to full screen mode, you will not be able to view the screen menu bar but can easily access by moving your pointer to the screen’s top. To change window sizes, select size from the view menu or video menu on Mac OS X v10.6 and earlier. To play a movie, click on Play Movie while in the DVD menu. When you play DVD with the DVD Player Controller, you can turn subtitles on or off, skip chapters, fast forward or rewind, stop, pause and much more.

What's the difference between Blu-ray & DVD and will we eventually have to buy Blu-ray disc players?

Blu-Ray uses a blue-violet laser as opposed to the red laser used on DVDs. This allows Blu-Ray discs to hold a lot more information on them than DVDs.

This increase in the amount of information that can be stored on a disc allows you to put High-Definition movies on a disc and not run out of space, since the average HD movie will take up about 15-20 GB of space.

If you have not seen an HD movie yet I would suggest stopping by your local Best Buy or Circuit City and looking at a Blu-Ray display. The images are sharper, brighter, and more detailed than any DVD movie. What manufacturers are trying to do is make the movie look as close to what you see in a real theater as possible, except for its a tenth the size and in your home.

Blu-Rays cannot be played in a traditional DVD player, which means that you will eventually have to buy a blu-ray player. However, all blu-ray players can play DVDs, and they upscale the images to look better on an HD screen, up to 1080p

So, while you will have to get a new Blu-Ray player to play HD movies, you can still see all of your current DVDs on the same player, and they'll be enhanced.

In essence, Blu-Ray will replace DVD just as DVD replaced VHS and the CD replaced the Casette Tape.

Does a DVD super multi DL drive play blu ray?

Nope. It's a DL capable DVD burner and player only. The "Super multi" is a marketing term supposedly denoting the wide range of disk formats (NOT the # of disks) it handles. But what once was unusual is now pretty standard. Either way, for $500 it's a pretty good deal even getting a burner on a compact laptop. Blu-ray drives still haven't made laptops in the under $1000 range (although they are getting close).

That said, unless you have an HDMI output on the laptop and a big HD display to watch it on (in which case you've got one of the world's most expensive BD players), what's the point of a BD drive in a laptop to watch movies (There may be some slight justification for data storage, like home HD video preparation)? Sure ... pay more $ for a Blu-ray disk to watch on your sub-HD 12" display. Yup ... makes sense to me! Not. Anyone who thinks otherwise is probably also a candidate for Blu-ray on their phone or their 5" GPS display ... with DTS HD Master sound on their earbuds.
