Once you get there, if you work hard, eventually they will let you work on your own. Be prepared to walk dogs, clean cages, brush cats and dogs, give baths, clean up poop and do anything else they ask. It's not always fun but the more you offer to help, the more they will trust you and the more they will teach you!

We have a 10 year old volunteer who is one of the hardest workers I have ever met. She helps us socialize puppies, give baths, clean cages and she handles dogs in training classes. She has been volunteering since she was 8 years old! She's very special and is one of most trusted volunteers. Everyone forgets how young she is. Our director was skeptical at first but "K" earned her trust in a matter of weeks. You can do it too!

Stick with it and prove yourself with a vet or rescue. You'll love it.

I want to have career with animals, such as a Vet.I already volunteer at an animal shelter, but its not a paid job.I really need a job now.I am 18, in college, and would like to have some money of my own, and get some experience in the field.My mom suggested working at the local animal hospital, but I thought you had to have some sort of college degree.Right now I go to a city college, and they dont offer the classes to be a vet except Biology.I do plan on transferring to UC Davis(the only vet school in California)or Moorpark college(animal program)

It depends on the shelter. Go to the shelter near you and ask them. I know at the shelter I volunteer at, people aren't allowed to walk the dogs by themselves until they are 18 because younger kids tend to lose control of them. For other things you need to be 16, but you can volunteer if you are younger and you have a parent with you. This is just at my shelter, they are all different and you wont really know until you ask them. The worst they can do is tell you that you are too young. That's at animal shelters. I know some hospitals allow candystripers in who are 14 but you have to get a TB test done. And I don't believe you can volunteer at a hotel...they hire people to work at hotels.
If you really want to volunteer, churches often feed the homeless and they generally allow younger people to do that.

Talk to the people who talk to animals. Ask any one in veterinary medicine you know in any capacity, and offer to do helpful tasks in exchange for the opportunity to observe an entire afternoon or day with a Veterinarian. Maybe your Los Angeles Veterinarian has a colleague from DVM school who practices in the East Bay. Ask if you can use his/her name as an introduction. Follow up, send thank you notes, network!

Be strategic. Another student sent letters and emails to several veterinarians she found in the phonebook. It took a lot of calls and in-person visits, but she eventually convinced one professional that she would be an asset to the practice.

Use Campus Resources. Check out CalCorps, and the Tang Center, for opportunities to work in health care settings. Stiles Hall, located on Bancroft Way between the Career Center and the Tang Center helps connect Cal students with community service opportunities.

Use Career Center resources. Get on the CareerMail Health Professions list to learn about opportunities in health care settings. Check out the Internship section to learn about opportunities including the externship program which is designed for Cal students to utilize the winter break. Every year health care professionals and scientists have offered the opportunity for students to spend time with them in the workplace. Also look on CalJobs for volunteer and paid opportunities to work with animals.

Can a 13 year old volunteer at a children's hospital?

Hi, soo. I'm 13, and in February I finished my chemotherapy for Ovarian cancer, during my time on the ward I saw that the children, especially the younger ones were often bored and agitated, with nothing to do but sit there while they were receiving their chemotherapy. I was thinking of volunteering at my city's children's hospitals cancer ward, but I don't know how I would go about doing that? Would I be old enough? I know all of the doctors and nurses in the hospital and I am familiar with most of the people and patients there, I'm also pretty good with children having two little brothers..one being four years old. I also know how to speak to them, and feel completely normal and not awkward around them, because I, myself have been in their situation and have a rough idea how they're feeling and how they wish to be treated..which is the same as every other human being/child. I would raise money for new toys/equipment for the ward and games to play with them. They rarely get any visitors except for these really annoying clowns. I also know the hygiene routine that you need to do to go on them wards and to only visit if I'm 1OO% well so they don't catch any infections.
