I have participated in numerous creative writing contests and competitions. Right from my school days when it was a huge deal to get your article selected in the school magazine to editing a book for an online friend, I have tried to do it all. My biggest achievement has been winning the Times Of India Writer of the Month award for May 2016 and getting published in a book that has sold several thousands of copies on Collective: Amazon.in: Kindle StoreApart from this, there were competitions in my engineering college that were extremely fun to participate in and win. Getting published in the All India Poetry Society’s Journal in 2015 was another big win. One thing has stayed constant for all the times I have participated in such competitions whether I was aware of it or not.Read, read, read- How will you be able to unlock the deeper realms inside your imaginative brain if you have no idea what are the various kinds of boxes that can be unlocked? You need to be able to drown in the wealth of the imagination out there in the world, where men and women better than you and me have toiled to put words on paper, to weave a story, to iron creases on a sad face or to elicit a moist response from an eye. Reading preceeds writing. Listening preceeds talking. Walking preceeds running. It’s as simple as that.Never submit your first draft- You think you have a masterpiece in your hand. You believe you cannot hope to recreate the magic in your tale when you scrutinize it with a microscope and wring out the rough edges. But trust me, your first draft is nowhere close to what it can finally be. For the story that got me published, I had 5 drafts before I turned in my copy. I read my story 10 times till I had most of the lines memorised, till every error was corrected, till every possible twist and turn was explored in my head. Think of it as exercising your vocal chords. You never give an audition before having sung atleast a hundred times off stage. Why should your written work be any different?Hope this helps. Essay contests are a great way to get scholarships. You do not have to be an exceptional writer to win, but you do need to have compelling content and a solid structure. The best essays do not have to be the most creative. The best essays tell us something about YOU and provide us with a compelling reason to give you the $10,000 Scholarship. Great topics to help us learn about you include (1) things you have accomplished and what you have learned from them, (2) hardships you have faced, how you have overcome them, and what you have learned about yourself as a person, and (3) your life / career goals and how you have developed them. This is by no means an exhaustive list and we've seen great essays on many topics, but the key is that the essay tells us something about YOU. Too many essays we've seen spend most of their content talking about the person's family, friends, or describes a single moment in the person's life. While it sometimes is important to include a sentence or two of backstory, the essay needs to be focused on YOU.Finally, you need to be structured. Try to use a direct approach. Don't write a narrative and wait to put the important content at the end of the essay. Wow the person from the start and use a thesis statement that provides clear direction to your essay.
