Can Someone Guide Me Toward Becoming An Architect

Why did you decide to become an architect?

Went to architecture school because I love architecture. Then quit after several years when I realized I hated to work as an architect. Architecture is a pretty expensive thing to get done, and therefore you’ll always be working for a client who most of the times wont share your vision 100%, making it impossible to just be an architect, you’ll also have to be a mediator, psychologist, etc. I still love architecture BTW.

How do I become a self-taught architect?

There are a bunch of courses online that can give you a head start in architecture. Namely; The Architectural ImaginationA Global History of ArchitectureMaking Architecture | CourseraI could name a few more but I'd restrict myself to these 3 if I were you.Tadao Ando was a truck driver, a boxer, did a 6 month crash course in design and now is a world famous architect. So yes! It is possible to become a self taught architect. But I would rather go to architecture school, if I were you (especially in this age and time).Because there is nothing like the life you will have in architecture school man and especially if you stay in a hostel. From late night table tennis games, coffee talks, infinite number of sketches, music scenes, girlfriend scenes(not in my case tho), re submissions, gaming, binge watching movies, learning different languages (if you're studying in India), the infinite number of stitches on your fingers because of model making, and the list is endless. You will have them lazy times, fun times, working your ass off times, and the time of your life.So if you miss out on this part of your life and then become an architect. Then bro! You ain't the real thing man.Anyways good luck to you and hope you have innovative and responsible designs to offer the world.P. S. If you do those courses which I shared with you, you will be way ahead of your class and you would probably have more knowledge than the professors in your college. And more recently, there's been a new and upcoming architecture podcast in India called archgyan.Check it out on archgyan.com

How do I prepare for a position of Java architect?

The simple answer is: you don’t. You cant become a Java Architect over night. That is why you have to be a Junior Java Architect first before you can become a “real” one.So is there nothing you can do? Well, no. I’m gonna give you three exercises that you can do with a friend or co-worker to prep you for the interviewExercise #1: Explain something complexTake some like transaction management and explain it to your friend. Focus on explaining everything clearly and adapt yourself to the knowledge of your friend. At the end your friend should summarize what you said and he should have understood everything. Why? This exercise will focus your communication skills. As an architect you’ll need to be able to clearly communicate problems and tasks to other people in the team.Excersise #2: Convince a co-workerFind a co-worker that disagrees with you on a specific solution. E.g. he want to use a webservice (xml) and you want to use a rest service (json). Convince him in a friendly way of choosing your solution. Why? Being a Java architect will require you to convince people of your way of working.Exercise #3: Answering technical questionsJust let a friend pick any book about a topic you should know e.g. Spring framework or EJB’s and let him ask you questions about it.Why? It is much more fun than just reading the book ;). Pus it keeps your knowledge sharp.

Should I major in Architecture (as in building buildings) to pursue a UX career? Or switch ASAP?

So you've got a lot going on in your question (and yes, I agree this question is applicable to anyone considering switching majors). You say you understand that architecture is good preparation for a UX role, but have concerns that you aren't able to get graphic design, psych, cognitive science or product design courses, which seems to be your first choice(s) to round out your skills. You're also committed to doing personal projects and building a portfolio, regardless of your major, but the CS major would allow you to build your portfolio (an observation: you're really focused on that portfolio!). So... here are some questions:1. How does changing your major to CS address your concerns about the skills you're lacking?2. How likely is it that the websites, apps, software etc. that you'd be doing in the CS program would contribute to a better portfolio than the projects you'd do in the architecture program?3. What are the benefits of staying with your architecture program? What are the costs? How could an architecture background be used to differentiate you in UX?4. How much are you enjoying architecture? How much would you enjoy coding and learning CS content?5. What are some other ways of addressing your skill gaps (beyond changing your major)?Your answers to these questions can guide your decision. Here's also a couple related things that may help inform your decision:What is the quickest way to learn how to be a UI/UX designer in the UK? My background is Fashion and Administration-This is a career change. Should user interface designers be able to build what they design? And here's a personal philosophy that guides me at the moment: there are no mistakes. You seem clear on your goal, so your question really relates to the mechanics of how to get there. Both paths offer strengths and weaknesses and both can reasonably lead to your goal. So the question is ultimately this: which path will make the best use of your assets and promote the greatest satisfaction for you?Good luck!
