Can Switching Rooms Mess Up Modem Settings

If I put a switch between my cable modem and wireless router, will devices hardwired to the switch be on the same network as devices connected to the router?

As far as I know.Adding a switch between modem and router is not possible. At least not practically. Each port on the switch is a different IP address, so I dont think you would be able to do this without buying another router (second network) or WAP (same network) between the wire machines in the basement and router.Consider redesigning your network.Leave the modem in the basement.Cable one wire up to rooms upstairs where you need wireless (one is there already, and hopefully at least CAT-5e).Mount router upstairs two feet from ceiling.Attach Ethernet cables to wireless router.Mount switch close to router, and wire one short (to be neat) cable to routerWire two wires BACK downstairs from switch to existing PC and iMac (one is there….use that cable to pull the other one).Any wired devices upstairs can be wired to switch (or to router if you really want). Try to go through walls and use wallplates to be neat. It should be easy from the basement…or down to baseboard (it pries off), across, and up wall again.Good luck.

Will changing my modem affect my router?

It depends on a lot of factors.
If you are lucky it will work out of the box.
If on the other hand some configuration was required on the router, you will need to reconfigure it.
If they are sending their software over I take it might be a PPPoE connection which means you will deffinitively need to configure your router and tell it your username and password.

Still if it's not PPPoE and you had a dynamic ip before, and now you still have a dynamic ip there is no need to change anything on the router.
If any of the above criteria is met though, then yes, you will need to reconfigure.

Can I use two routers with one modem.?

In my house my router and modem are in the basement with the modem and the only desktop in the house. I'm two floors up and have a laptop and have difficulty getting a good connection, is there anything I can buy or do to make this better? Can I get a second router and put it in my room? Or do I need a modem for that?
Thanks for the help.

Move Centurylink Dsl modem to another room?

There are DSL connections that don't require a active phone line and therefore no dial tone. DSL without phone service is known as naked or dry DSL. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_DSL

Any DSL connection still requires copper phone lines between the DSL modem and the phone company. What DRY DSL does is eliminate the need for a active phone line, thus reducing your cost.

Dry DSL is becoming harder to find, telephone providers don't want to do it because it is not as profitable. See this blog post: Verizon Ceases Standalone DSL Internet Service Switching Users To Landline Bundles - http://isp1.us/blog/verizon-ceases-standalone-dsl-internet-service-switching-users-to-landline-bundles/

My best guess would be that your home has multiple lines, as has been common for the past 20 years. CAT3 or CAT5 cabling is used which has 4 pairs of wires and can support up to 4 separate connections.

The technician enabled your DRY DSL connection on one pair, however the phone jack you are trying to use is connected to a different pair disconnected entirely.

The wires are color coded, you'll have to take the jack loose from the wall and look to see which colored pair is being used. Phone circuits are low voltage, and there is no danger of being shocked.

If you don't want to attempt it yourself, practically any competent handyman or knowledgeable friend should be able to handle the job.

Good Luck...

Is using A Speedtouch 546v6 DSL modem/router as an ethernet switch/hub possible?

Yes. You can use a Speedtouch 546v6 as a switch. You will have to access its configuration page, though, and give it an IP Address that you are not using. Make sure that you put in an IP Address that has the same network address, as the network that you connect it to. For example, if you want to connect it to a 192.168.1.0 network, you must assign it an IP Address in that network, since it is a switch. You can assign it the IP Address 192.168.1.1. A switch cannot route packets between 2 different networks.

How do I connect two computers in separate rooms using AT&T's gateway dsl modem.?

AT&T uses a 2wire Gateway Router and Gateway modem. It really is a very good device. It is indeed wirelessly enabled. WPA is already set (the code is on the label of the unit between the braces [ code ] ) I have the exact same setup. All my computers are connected and locally networked as well as connected to the internet. A cheap USB stick is probably the easiest to use. They run from 12-40 bucks the lower cost ones seem to work just as well as the higher priced ones.

If you already have wireless in one unit just use it, it will connect, If you don't have a wireless card just get a USB and your done.
Here is a really inexpensive one.

$12.50
My unit covers the entire house upstairs and down just fine.

How do you set up a D-Link Router in a dorm room?

I recently purchased a D-Link Wired Router (EBR-2310) online that I want to use to set up Wi-Fi in my dorm room and I'm having a lot of trouble doing it. It seems to have been configured correctly using the set up wizard but it can't finish checking the internet connection -- It asks for an Account Name and Password that I don't know.... Can anyone offer help? I'm not sure if I even got the correct type of router. I don't get my internet from a modem, I get it from a plug in the wall (I guess that is a modem of some sort? Heh).

Thanks
