Can Teeth Heal Themselves

Can cavities heal on adult teeth by themselfs?

Can my cavities on adult teeth ever heal by themselves? Is there anything I could do to help the healing process? I have never seen this happen to anyone but i was hoping it is possible.

How fast can teeth heal themselves?

1st rule of dentistry.Enamel can never heal itself. No matter how many people want it to. If the enamel is gone - it is gone. Now dentine healing. Yes it can happen but it is slow- as in years to make 1–2 mm of dentine. But it is like making a brick wall you start at the bottom and work up. In this case the bottom is the bottom of the hole and then you work away from the hole. So the hole never fills in it is just walled off from the tooth. If you want dentine to fill the hole the tooth needs to be in a sterile environment with the stem cells somehow protected. This how a tooth forms - it takes years and years.

How well do human teeth heal?

By healing, do we mean that it will repair itself after an injury? If that’s the case, then I have pretty bad news for you— Teeth cannot heal themselves. The most outer layer of teeth, the enamel, is acellular, meaning that it does not contain cells, and therefore, cannot heal; however, the next layer, the dentin, actually has a protective feature— reparative dentin formation. Reparative dentin formation doesn’t exactly constitute healing, as it is merely adding another layer of itself, but still, this isn’t always enough to heal extensive cavities.Restorative treatment (this can be either in the form of getting fillings or crowns) can help in healing in a sense that it will prevent further injury. This prevention of further injury can be achieved in a multitude of ways— first, by the removal of infected tooth structure (and it also follows that the germs that caused the cavity in the first place will go away too); second, by the application of medicaments that will help strengthen the remaining tooth structure; and third, by sealing off the vulnerable tooth structure by installation of the actual filling.Once injury (whether pathologic or physiologic) has reached the innermost layer of the tooth, the pulp, it pretty much goes downhill from there. Once injury affects the nerve, there’s no turning back— you either get it extracted, or get root canal treatment.

Do teeth repair small holes themselves rather than need fillings?

Small insipient lesions can be remineralized and heal. Sometimes this can occur without professional intervention or via the use of topical fluoridea and/or remineralizing agents. These insipient lesions are either beneath the outer layer of enamel, on the surface (white spot lesion) or in the pits and fissures of the chewing surfaces of posterior teeth. If the outer layer of enamel is broken through, which is the visible cavity, it cannot be healed over and eliminated. Remineralization can stop the progression of the decay, but there still will be a defect present that should be restored. So a white spot lesion on the surface of a tooth can be repaired as it is the earliest sign of decayHere is a white spot lesion, different colour compared to the rest of the enamelHere is insipient decay between teeth that can healHere are denineralized pits and fissures that can be remineralizedHere are lesions that are arrested but would have to be restored because of cavitation. The second image is arrested decay after application of silver diamine fluorideThis lesion may not be very evident in the mouth but can be detected on radiograph and cannot be healed and requires restorationSo if your dentist tells you that you have cavities it is important for you to have him or her explain exactly what this means with respect to treatment

If human bones can repair themselves, why can't chipped teeth do the same?

The answer lies in the structures and cells of the two different tissues.BoneBone is a constantly changing hard tissue that reacts to pressures and changes around it.  It is filled with cells (osteoblasts) that continuously build it up, and cells (osteoclasts) that continuously resorb it.  Bone also contains other cells, but theses are the main ones involved in bone remodeling and repair.  They exist throughout the bone.  When a bone is broken, the osteoclasts and osteoblasts work to "stitch" the bone back together in a process that takes a few weeks.  It is important for the bone to be immobile to allow the process to work properly - this is the reason that casts are worn, or rods and pins are inserted, when a bone is broken.TeethTeeth are formed in the jaw from ameloblasts and odontoblasts.  Although there are other cells within and that help to form a tooth, these are the two main types of cells that form a tooth's bulk.Ameloblasts and odontoblasts start by lining up next to each other.  Ameloblasts then start to form enamel (the hard outer coating of a tooth), while odontoblasts form dentin (the porous inner structure of the tooth).  Enamel and dentin are laid down next to each other, with the ameloblasts and odontoblasts getting further away from each other as they lay down more and more enamel and dentin (imagine two people standing back to back, then beginning to march away from each other, trailing enamel or dentin as they go). After the enamel is completely formed, the ameloblasts are lost as the tooth erupts into the mouth.  No more enamel can ever be formed in the future as there are no more ameloblasts on the tooth.  If tooth enamel is fractured or lost, there is no natural way to regenerate it.  In contrast, odontoblasts are maintained within the centre of the tooth and can continue to form dentin under certain circumstances; however this process is extremely slow and would be unable to repair or replace any significant amount of structure lost if a tooth was fractured.SummaryBone can repair itself because osteoblasts and osteoclasts are designed to continuously repair and remodel bone throughout life.  In contrast, teeth have no cells with the same abilities, and cannot repair themselves if fractured.

Are cavities permanent or can teeth heal?

depending on the depth, cavities CAN "heal."

INCIPIENT decay is MILD decalcification of the enamel usually less than 1 mm in depth (as opposed to moderate and severe decay).

the surface must be intact. basically the enamel is more porous. Flouride fills in the gaps thus remineralizing the tooth. That's why we love flouride and it's great on a day to day basis.

But holes larger than 2-3 mm cannot "heal" because the surface is no longer intact. Then you'll need a dental filling.

brush with flouride toothpaste and floss!

prevention is the easiest and cheapest.

Can dry socket heal by itself or...?

dry socket is actually NOT an infection like the previous posters have stated. it is simply an exposure of the jawbone. your socket can indeed get infected, but you can have a dry socket with no infection.

go back to the dentist. he'll pack the socket with medicines to relieve the pain and will most likely prescribe you antibiotics if you aren't on them already in order to prevent an infection, which may further prolong the healing of the area.
