Seriously, you should choose a Major that both facilitiates pre-dentistry courses, and also offers good career prospects of you don't make it to Dentistry School.

How many years of college are needed to become a dentist?

In the United States, most dental schools require you to have an undergraduate degree first, so that's 4 years, and of course you need plenty of science courses. A very few dental schools still accept students with only 3 years of college. That used to be more common, but it is down to a handful of dental schools now. Figure on 4 years of college.

Dental school itself is also usually 4 years. There are 3-year programs, where you go in the summers as well, but you have to look for those.

Bottom line: the absolute minimum in the US is 6 years (3 years college plus 3 years dental school). But most commonly, dentists get 8 years of schooling (4 plus 4) before going into practice.

I hope this helps. Good luck!!

How many years does it take to become a dentist?

3 years to complete UNIVERSITY pre-reqs
4 yeas of dental school (one dental school University of Pacific is 3 but they have the HIGHEST TUITION in the country.)
8 years to become a general dentist

If you want to specialize:
2 years for endodontics (10 total)
2 years for orthodontics (10 total)
2 years for pedodontics (10 total)
4 years for oral surgeon MD/DDS (12 total)

To become a dentist you must take certain college courses to be considered for admission to a dental school. The "typical" required classes are listed below. Most people take 3 years to complete these courses, then apply to dental school. The application process can take 4-6 months, so most people will finish up their bachelors degree (4 years of college) while they wait for acceptance.

PRE-REQUISITE COURSES FOR DENTAL SCHOOL
1) Inorganic chemistry (1 year)
2) Organic chemistry (1 year)
3) Math (physics 1 semester, triganometry 1 semester)
4) Biology (1 year)
5) Human anatomy

**Suggested additional courses: Statistics, Histology, Upper level biology, biochemistry

ENTRANCE EXAM REQUIRED FOR DENTAL SCHOOL:
The Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) is a rigorous exam that will cover the above subjects.

DENTAL SCHOOL IS HIGHLY COMPETATIVE:
For every open seat in dental school, on average, 3 applicants will apply, so you have approximately a 30% chance. The average gpa is 3.4 for most schools (comparable to medical schools.)

How do I become a Dentist after 30 with no prior college education?

One would have to take all of the prerequisites for medical/dental school and achieve in two years a 4.0 average. Then one would have to do exceptionally well on the MCAT or DCAT. Then four years of professional schooling. Although it is rare for a 3 year undergraduate from being accepted to Dental School, I have a friend who got into Dental School with TWO years and a 4.0 for all of his pre-dental courses and a high DCAT.Generally professional schools are reluctant to admit those whitout undergraduate degrees, but they do often take into account the additional maturity that comes from doing other things and being a bit older.

How many years of dental school do you have to have to become a dentist?

2 or 3 or 4 years of undergraduate studies. Longer than 4 years for some who get a masters before getting a doctorate or go into research or simply take a break.3 years if a graduate of Dugoni Dental School (UOP) in San Francisco. 4 years for all other dental schools in the US and Canada. Possibly longer (5 years) if overseas.Internships and general practice residencies are optional to gain experience, efficiencies, and confidence. But these usually come with a stipend to compensate licensed and ‘free to roam’ general dentists and aren’t considered “dental school” even though learning is taking place.
