Can You Develop Anorexia From Starving Yourself

If starving yourself "doesn't" work, then how do anorexic people get so skinny?

Of course, if you literally starve yourself... like anorexics do... you WILL lose weight. The body needs food to build muscle, replace organs and tissue, and generally function the way the body is intended to function. Anorexics don't just temporarily stop eating (or come close to stopping eating), they starve themselves EVERY SINGLE DAY... week after week, month after month. It can go on for YEARS if they don't get help. Their bodies just shrivel up and shrink away.

When you hear/read people saying, "Starving yourself doesn't work in 'dieting,'" they are referring to skipping meals or eating super small meals... that sort of thing... for short periods of time. And they are right. You see, you actually NEED food to lose weight because it keeps up your metabolism, which is like your body's furnace. A high metabolism burns food more efficiently. When you starve yourself, your body shifts into a survival mode where it holds on to whatever calories you do take in... in anticipation of your next starvation period. Also when you starve yourself, your body starts breaking down your muscles to get access to the energy in them. As your muscles waste away, it effects your metabolism.

Can you starve yourself, without becoming anorexic?

Dont starve yourself. You're going to gain all the weight back and more. Trust me I've done it before. Just eat healthy and excersise. I know you're probably not going to listen to me because I didn't listen to anyone when I was starving myself. But honestly diet and excersise is the best way to lose weight. Its so unhealthy to starve yourself. I did and I almost passed out while I was out with my friends. Its really a bad idea to starve yourself!!!

At what point is starving yourself considered anorexia?

According to the criteria in the most recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, starving oneself can be clinically considered anorexia when one displays: - a persistent restriction of food intake that results in a significantly low body weight (relative to expectations with regards to age, sex, height, physical health etc.)- an intense fear of weight gain and becoming fat (this actually manifests as a fear of being a normal weight, as nobody wants to be fat, but among anorexic individuals, the idea of being normal evokes fear) and this persists even if the weight of the person in question is already low or has become low- a disturbance in the way that body weight or shape is experienced, having excessive influence on self-evaluation, or persistent failure to recognise the seriousness of the currently low body weight.I do believe that the act of starving oneself is cause for a lot of concern, but one cannot be officially diagnosed, according to the recent publication of the manual, unless these criterion which are related to their subjective experience (the fear of weight gain, the skewed body image, the inability to recognise the dangers of pursuing the restriction), and their weight (low weight as a result of restriction). In previous years, anorexia could be diagnosed after there had been a loss of I think it was 25% of body weight, so essentially the act of starving oneself would be seen as anorexia if a quarter of body weight had been lost in the process. There is also purging type anorexia, which is the same pattern of restriction but with periods of bingeing followed by compensatory behaviour, but the same patterns of self-starvation would apply in these cases.

Do I have anorexia nerviosa even if I’m not starving myself to lose weight?

A common misconception about eating disorders is that they’re about the weight loss. Often the eating disorder is the symptom, like a coping mechanism, for something else the individual is dealing with. It gives individuals suffering with anorexia a sense of control over their environment, their bodies and other people when they self restrict. Meanwhile, their mind could be full of all the other things they still feel like they can’t control. Its a very dangerous and damaging way to exert your self control. People don’t have to be anorexic long before it truly damages their bodies. Also 20% of people with severe eating disorders eventually die as a result of this behavior. If you have been engaging in any food behavior that you think is dangerous, and I think you’re concerned or you wouldn’t have asked the question, call your doctor, your therapist or the National Eating Disorder Association HELP LINE at 800–931–2237.

How long do you have to starve to be anorexic?

Anorexia is a complex psychiatric condition. Food restriction is but one of many symtpoms of this horrific disorder. It is not a volitionally acquired behavior that one "stops" after a week.

"Trying not to eat for a week" is a foolish crash diet, not anorexia nervosa. Unfortunately for your friend, this sort of crash diet is ultimately doomed to fail. Although she may drop a few pounds the first few days, she will likely gain it back (and then some) when she resumes her regular eating habits.

How to starve yourself?

Don't give me oh it's bad for you you'll end up anorexic. I could care less about that. I just want to lose weight and I don't care if starving yourself isn't healthy. Oh and how long should I exercise for? Btw I'm 15 and I weigh 147 and I'm 5'1. I JUST WANT AN ANSWER ON HOW TO STARVE YOURSELF. Thanks

How can I get the anorexic look without starving myself?

Eating regularly is actually good for what you want to achieve - sumo wrestlers eat one or two high carb meals a day to get to their size, you eating regularly will tell your body not to store food as fat or weight (because it knows more fuel is coming soon). So don't change that.

Be sure to have blood tests to see if you need to eat more of a specific food, i.e. I wont go telling you not to be stupid - you know it's risky being under weight - but do ensure the food you do eat is decent (veg/fruit/low sugar generally)

Low carb is a good way to reduce body fat %, even when you are as small as you are, it asks the body to go through ketosis which is where fat is broken down for fuel rather than carbohydrates. You could do something like atkins for 8 weeks.

all this advise assumes you are not stupid though - if you feel genuinley week, go to bed at 10pm and are shocked to find you slept until 11am (13 hours) you have to slow down the process - SHOCKING your system only works temporarily, so dont think half the calories or half the carbs works twice as well - it just doesnt work like that, you are weakening the system that is being used to burn fat - understand? starvation = retaining food stores as fat, atheletes eat well and often, you need to aim for the same, but with a focus on low carb.

Dont ignore friends and family comments - listen to people you trust.

Is starving yourself an eating disorder?

Not eating can lead to an eating disorder. I guess it depends on the reason WHY you are not eating. Not eating can be eventually diagnosed as Anorexia. If you are not eating because you feel sick every time you eat, and not because you think you are fat, you are not anorexic yet. Anorexics know their weight on the scale is lower than most people but when they look in the mirror, all they see is fat.

After not eating for a while, when you do eat again... it can cause you to be nauseated and even vomit. people who have been lost in the woods for a while and have been rescued are typically advised when they eat again, to eat something that is not their favorite food as it often leads to vomiting and then the person no longer associates that food with good memories.

If you have stopped eating because you felt sick every time you eat, then you need to have some tests done and talk to a doctor. My daughter had nausea every time she ate for a year and a half because the doctor did not do a gallbladder motility test to figure out her gallbladder was moving slowly. She became anorexic because of the original nausea. There are many other reasons why a person would be nauseated after they eat and you really should go to the doctor and be tested... especially if you became nauseated BEFORE stopping eating.

Can i starve myself without becoming anorexic?

oh gosh, dont even go there! Starving the body is the worst way to loose weight and can lead to potential health problems. Also if you starve the body, it will go into survival mode, you may not feel it but the metabolism will slow down to snail pace, and the body will store everything you eat so it will be easier to get fat, and you will loose muscle mass. Instead of going for that donut, or snacking, go for a yougurt, and some fruit. Just dont starve yourself! good luck

How many days do you have to starve to be anorexic?

Thats not really how anorexia works, you have to be below a healthy BMI of 19 or so starving yourself is a sign but not what defines it.A BMI of 18.5 would make a doctor concerned and a BMI of 17.5 is often only seen in those who are anorexic. The length of days you starve yourself for does not make you anorexic, however being afraid of weight gain ,purging(throwing up after meals) obsessive calorie counting and weighing of food as well as obsessing over ones weight and imagined fatness are signs of anorexia and weather or not you fit into the categorie of a low BMI or not you should seek help immediately, as the sooner you seek help the easier it will be to deal with.I know from experience that reading this you’re probably thinking something along the lines of ‘ yeah whatever I’m just trying to get skinny’, or something like that because that’s what i thought/am trying not to think when i read advice like this.I’m not going to say i know exactly what you’re going through because thats bull shit. Anorexia does different things to everyone, but the outcomes of losing weight this fast and especially by fasting are not good. You might get skinny fast but the outcomes are things like ceased menstruation (female) osteoporosis (female) heart failure/damage to the cardiac muscle, muscle atrophy, extreme tiredness, exhaustion in general, low blood pressure, dizziness, constipation, bloating, bad breath as your body begins to digest parts of itself that it shouldn’t (don’t kid yourself that its fat its not.)organ failure and dehydration (no water from food as well as water =dehydrated) constant cold, growth of tiny fine hairs all over the body (trying to shave them off ends badly don’t try it.) depression and eventually death. So please if you think your anorexic talk to a phsych or your GP and if you still want to lose weight do it safely by speaking to a dietician. Anorexia is a serious condition its not something you can get by starving yourself,If you wish you had an eating disorder you probably have a baby one already,my advice is kill it before it gets worse food is delicious and your beautiful (or handsome) whatever shape you are naturally <3*pls excuse the long answer and appauling spelling ( i did my best)
